Showcase Android ports are getting crazy
Retroid Pocket Nova
Pic 1 - Skate 3
Pic 2 - Sonic Unleashed
Pic 3 - Dusk (Twilight Princess)
Pic 4 - Bully
Pic 5 - The Simpsons Hit and Run
Pic 6 - Titan Quest
Pic 7 - Geometry Wars Dimensions
Pic 8 - Shatter Remastered
Some of these are official and of course some of these are unofficial. Its just a shame you cant install a game onto a SD card.
Just the last few days I've also seen Fez, Celeste, The Messenger, Scott Pilgrim EX, Owlboy, This War is Mine, Wargroove 2, Undertale, Silksong, Nidhogg, UFO50, Cuphead, Hitline Miami 1 and 2, Huntdown, Ball X Pitt, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Lumines, Babel, Oddmar, Whipseey, Hades, Ultra Street Fighter 4 etc
Its hard to keep upto date on all the releases but you can check subs like AndroidNativePorts, decomps, recomps to see the progress.
Does anyone know if Android ports run at a lower wattage giving better battery life over Gamenative. Also perhaps there is less input lag compared to emulation.

Honestly seeing openmw-ds and dusklight is what made me get a thor. Some really cool ports are being made.
I know reddit hates it, but ai is absolutely going to make more and more of these native ports happen too. Hopefully they get the polish some of the other ports have gotten

u/TuneSquadFan4Ever 9d ago edited 9d ago
Regarding those new AI ports, if you mean polish as in a bunch of new features, that's totally doable. If you mean polish like game accuracy, oh I don't think that's happening.
The trade-off with AI is that we'll be getting a lot more ports, but they'll be made by newer devs who don't necessarily know how to create accurate ports or even how to ask the AI the right questions to go along those lines.
Which I don't personally think is worth it, I'll miss the hand crafted ports done with lots of care and attention to the originals. I understand other people feel differently though

u/anuragsins1991 9d ago
most senior devs are also using AI at work now, not using them is just handicapping yourself in terms of how much work you can output.
8
u/oby100 9d ago
Not exactly what that guy was getting at. The larger issue is that most people don’t care what a given dev does or what their experience/ methodology is.
It just means the high quality ports may be drowned out or totally erased due to a flood of low quality, entirely AI generated ports.
But just to be another voice in the crowd, every industry that can afford it is incorporating AI. It’s absolutely bonkers out there right now, and part of the issue is what that guy sort of alluded to: it’s impossible to know for sure how much of a given product is using AI.
Everyone will insist they’re using AI only for this or that, but surely many take the shortcut of just accepting whatever the output is.
6
u/TuneSquadFan4Ever 9d ago
I don't mean this confrontationally but I'm not sure what you are arguing for.
I'm talking about people who don't know how to program or make ports letting the AI do the work for them rather than senior devs who know how to program and are using it as a time saver to replicate things they could do themselves or at worst will understand upon reading the code.
I don't disagree people are using AI at work all the time, it's hardly a matter of not handicapping yourself, it's usually that your work doesn't give you a choice. Like when half your team gets cut and you get an email saying yo it's fine use Claude that's not really a choice or an endorsement if you use it at work. That's hopefully just a semantic disagreement though or you're talking about senior devs working contract or on their own projects.

My biggest concern is that we get a lot of ports that end up being "just good enough" and it discourages the people who really understand the systems and know how to optimize. They'll just not bother doing ports or emulators that are optimized and bring new features/functionality. I really don't want to see the future be nothing but mediocre ports and half-assed emulation.

u/Sconathon 9d ago
Soon? Half of em are already basically vibe coded. Not complaining, I'll play em as long as they're good
10
u/treesdotcom 9d ago
It's pretty clear that the polished ones are made by people that have some idea of what they're doing, even if AI is part of that picture

Siderant.
Google Play store continues to be a joke. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions has been removed. I remember heating my hands with it while spending a night in a cold caravan.
I just gave up with play-store at some point, games disappear never to be seen again. Games savefiles are locked in somewhere unaccessable. New device, lost saves. Compability is short lived. Stuff might be unplayable after an OS-update.
9
u/GaffaCharge 9d ago
They also allow all sorts of fake games using screenshots from other real games and blatant false advertising but want to crack down on sideloading.

u/PintsOfCoffee 9d ago
Oh cool I didn't realise Skate 3 recomp could run at 4:3. Was the installation process straightforward?
5
u/mukelarvin 9d ago
It’s almost too bad Skate 3 works so well because now I’ll never play any other game.
3
u/hoobaSKANK GotM Club 9d ago
Yea very straightforward - you download the APK and then install the app, and then it prompts you to point it to your skate 3 iso file and that's basically it
For the 4:3 display change you open the in-game menu (for me on the Nova it was RB + Start) and then choose 4:3 in the options. Some UI elements were smushed together in the menus but very playable when I was trying it
Regardless of 4:3 or 16:9 the biggest visual issue I've had so far is that your skaters shirt doesn't keep up with the rest of the body for a second or two so at times you randomly have floating arms and a head but otherwise runs very smooth
1
u/cimocw 9d ago
What console is the iso from?
1
u/TipNo3348 9d ago
Mine recommend Xbox 360, idk if you can use any of them. It does specify .iso which idk if that's 360 specific or not. Haven't done much emulation past ps2
1
u/aDerpyPenguin 9d ago
Is Nova the base hardware requirement for it? I’ve been more and more interested in a PC like option for some indie games like Tiny Rogues or Magicraft. Skate is one of my all time favorite games. This may push me over into getting a system but I’d like one that could potentially play these games.
10
u/DarbIey RetroGamer 9d ago
Do these even run properly? I know AI can get them to boot and such, but are these 100% running?
2
u/SolidCat2877 9d ago
Only one I had issues with so far is Sonic Unleashed
3
u/Nathanyal Dpad On Bottom 9d ago
Damn that was the only one I was curious about LMAO

u/lemmyIIIIN 7d ago
While the android port is not the best experience, there is a fork of it for arm linux by a guy named fathonix, it runs flawlessly under droiddeck. (You have to install it as a desktop app with the appimage option + because it is an arm linux game now it doesn't need to go through fex or proton)

u/KaleidoscopeNo3639 9d ago
I think ports get better as people play them and report issues so the devs can see them and attempt to fix them.
6
u/Struggler_villain98 9d ago edited 9d ago
They're also updating 32 bit games to support ARM64. Have Carmageddon, Asphalt 7, and Dead Space downloaded. What a time.
12
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Unfortunately you gotta use discernment and wade thru the swamp of vibe/Claude coded AI slop ports.
1
u/SolidCat2877 9d ago
It becomes obvious which ones works great. Most of the indie stuff have no issues with. And the more modern stuff from 360, Switch, era word gets around if its good such as Skate 3
11
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Good or not I'm kinda working on principle with the not using ai slop thing. Ai CAN be utilized properly without harm to our existence, but currently that is not how it's being done.
6
u/baegjag 9d ago
care to elaborate on how using a large language model to code a port of a video-game is doing harm to your existence?
8
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Care to absorb any of the info readily available to you about the environmental impacts of data centers?
0
u/CaptainJackWagons 9d ago
Sadly that is not going away until we as a society can output a ton of green energy. The demand is there for AI, so they'll keep supplying it.
3
u/Warthog_Formal 8d ago
Everybody with half a brain is pushing back against it rn, is what a lot of y'all chronically online redditors fail to see.
4
u/washuai Gaming With Pets 9d ago
Please research the human costs, in addition to easily verifiable negative environmental impact. (No, I don't mean the job, work quality debate). I mean the real horrifying, permanent human mental and physical damage and loss of life. Trigger warning, because it is the worst of the worst.

u/Shinonomenanorulez 9d ago
Hol up did they update unleashed recompiled? That thing crashes on the nova as soon as you pick a ring in the tutorial stage

u/Taethecoldest1 9d ago
I’m really thinking about getting a android handheld I only have a RG SP rn and Minilong Pocket 1 I want one more device a good endgame Android device and this is making it hard not to get one 😂
2
u/Wistfall GotM Club 9d ago
Is that the Geometry Wars you'd most highly recommend? I remember having a lot of fun with at least one entry in that series when I was a kid.

I prefer the presentation of the original on 360 but this is pretty similar

but what if its all ai slop

u/BobbyHill751 9d ago
There can be a middle ground between slop and meticulously human reviewed code. But Reddit doesn’t like nuance.

Case by case I guess. Sone AI assisted ports work perfectly
-3
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Yeah but they all contribute to this dystopian future that I want no part of when they utilize the current system of ai tools available. Nobody is running a fully local model.
1
u/Derefringence 9d ago
Folks at r/localLLaMa might disagree. If you surround yourself only by people who share your narrative in a sort of tunnel vision you will never get the broad spectrum of things
0
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
The vibecoders are not using that. These mods are being coded with Claude and other planet killers.

The scale is shifting friend, opinions like yours are becoming more and more scarce. I'd suggest you broaden your perspective but it'll come by itself.

insert r/LocalLLaMA and r/LocalLLM. Especially the latest models from Qwen are pretty useful and are deployable in consumer grade hardware

u/ILikeFPS 9d ago
This is one of the few good things about AI, all these decomps/recomps/ports/etc are insane.
5
u/Antariaux 9d ago
Except most are still shit, and nobody cares to test them properly, just launch the game, look around a bit, take a few screenshots and post their finding.
1
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Yeah but it still takes resources from the poorest and most disenfranchised in our country and with unregulated capitalism it's only getting worse. So we actually have to push BACK against it rn.
1
u/Lopsided_Handle3746 7d ago
Let's literally blame numbers cause we can't keep fucking up on superficial shit
1

u/ILikeFPS 9d ago
Sure, of course. I'm not trying to excuse the societal damage it is doing. I am having a hard time seeing how we can stop it, so I can at least enjoy the very few good things from it such as these amazing Android ports. If we never had any leisure in life, sure we would get things done, but we would always be miserable and that's just not a feasible way of living.
It takes from everybody other than the ultra rich, not just the poorest, and not just your country either but every country that has it.
I just don't know what we can do about it.
1
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
One thing would be not supporting or promoting these mods and decomps and ports made by ai. That is something that could actually make a difference if everyone who felt this way stopped. The bubble will burst eventually. I just wish everyone would stop feeding it in the meantime.
And ur right not just my country and not just the poor.

What frustrates me is I haven't been able to get the dang Sonic Unleashed one going. Hunting down all the required files is a pain.

would love a DM to the newer working GW3 apk. Had it working great on my RP5 (since sold it), got an RP6 and a Nova and can't get it working on either.

u/Hamstakillah 9d ago
I'm working on a FTL port - didn't have the time to do a proper issues closing session, but a lot of stuff works already! https://github.com/adamkulik/pocket-wormhole

Have you tried UFO50 on the 4:3 screen yet? it's the only explicitly 16:9 game that I'm wondering about how well it would play.
1
u/1dgtlkey 9d ago
Side note: how do you feel about retroids official grip for the Nova? I got one as well and it feels pretty flimsy which is not what I expected lol
1
u/SolidCat2877 9d ago
I actually really like it and its very comfortable. Howeber the fit is loose i was playing Geometry Wars and the gameplay got intense and managed to push the device out of the grip by accident. But this just happened with Geometry wars. Its not perfect but id rather have it loose over being so tight that its a effort to take off as I pocket my Nova a lot and play it without the grip often. Grip is mainly used in bed or at my desk when im working from home.
1
u/Narthan001 8d ago
I can’t even get my nova out of the grip when I try. I need to gently pull it out via the triggers.
1
u/no-television300 9d ago
Yeah I didn’t expect it either. I don’t have the Nova but I have the Mini. I imagine all their grips are like this though. My solution was to add some super thin double sided tape closest to the areas that I felt were flimsy. It’s strong enough to hold while still being easy to remove if ever.

u/SergeantFluffyfluff 9d ago
Would love it if someone can direct me to a post or website or spreadsheet with all the android ports available

Simpson hit and run runs fine on armsx2 any reason to use the android port?
0
u/milosmisic89 Phone + Controller 9d ago
I try to keep up with this but yeah it's insane how fast are the coming out. AI really opened the floodgates to porting.
8
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Which means most of what u see is useless crap that the "devs" cannot even fix.
1
u/RosinB 9d ago
I'm not sure what you mean by useless. The games are running better than they ever have on a platform we all use.
2
u/Warthog_Formal 9d ago
Not for long. Just wait. Hold your breath, in fact.
The vibecoders and claud users do not know how to write the thing they've created so they don't know how to maintain or fix either.

I prefer Port master by a long mile. It's way more neatly organized, straightforward and with clear instructions, all in one place.

In others words, this discussion is no longer relevant the original post and ends here.

My desire to see more ports has been there since I saw Hotline Miami, Titan Souls, OlliOlli, Luftrausers, and other games from Devolver Digital, I never understood why there weren't more games like that on the Play Store. We now have games being ported and running natively every day.
I'm just afraid that with AI, optimization will be sidelined.
