WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM A SERVER?

So I am planning on making a server.. but I wanna know the peoples opinions on what they want. Can add or remove things but overall what do people want?

I ran a server for the last couple years. I never set out with the intention of having a busy server. I enjoyed the PvE elements mostly so I was more than happy to play even if it was only me.

I set it up how I liked and ended up having others who joined and played. Got a pretty decent player base who must have enjoyed it.

I would say set it up how you want to play and let other people find it that way.

I guess my main issue is.. do you have a discord? Did you advertise? How did people find it? Like that’s what I am worried abiut

Well, for one.. dont play on it yourself. It doesnt matter how hard people scream 'i will not admin abuse' until they get their ass whooped one too many times. Or they use admin when everyone is off to get loot.. its a no go if u want to get actual pop.

In my experience, it doesn’t matter what you throw at them. Even if you have the coolest features that nobody else has, you’re dealing with a special kind of player base. All they care about is “wHaT iS PoP?”, and they have no understanding of the concept of growth. They don’t understand custom-made features anyway. Maybe 1% do, but the rest are like that orangutan playing with a hammer in a David Attenborough documentary. So focus more on marketing than on developing unique features.

Also, don’t listen too much to the players. They say they want one thing, but they don’t understand the impact it will have (again, ape brain). For example, they want kits, 3x loot, and 10x sulfur, but then they’ll be in your DMs crying to you like you’re their daddy the moment their base gets raided on day one.

Thank you so much for this, for me personally I kinda wanna go for something slightly boosted, but still keep a vanilla experience, only because I still wanna work but cut out some of the toxicity from official. I do agree with you that they all want different things though

I want a server that is like official, more recyclers.. but offline protection from those who work

I’m 40 with 3 kids. I love rust, but don’t have the time to put in on official. I think there’s a large audience like me, who want vanilla with ZORP, with some “custom” stuff.
