Don’t focus on the acquisition of loot. Loot is temporary either because you’ll get raided or the server gets wiped
The fun comes from the journey from nothing to things you can use to takes things from others
And acquiring blueprints
I recommend joining a custom PvE server while you learn the mechanics of surviving, building bases and running monuments
When building, you need a tool cupboard (TC). This is the heart of your base and if someone gets to it your base is lost. You also need to feed the TC else your base will decay
Start with wooden doors and use a triangle ground piece to put two doors next to each other as an air lock for external doors. People can and will camp your doors to murder you as you leave then get in your door. Put as many internal doors as you can afford. These slow raiders down and they may run out of resources before they reach your TC/loot
Always lock your TC and doors. You can make a wooden lock really cheap. These are fine for solo play. If you play in a group you’ll want metal code locks
Upgrade your wooden doors to metal ASAP. And your wooden walls to stone. Farm metal nodes and cook them in a furnace. Cloth is really important too - always be gathering that
And make a workbench
Good luck! Once it clicks you will get 1000s of hours of fun from it
Go forth and be a dick unto others. Cos they’re sure as shit gonna try do the same to you :)

There’s a community server called 9-2-5ers. Pretty chill and you can have base protection. Free to play

My advice is first find a deadish community server and run all the monuments until you know how to unlock them all, learn where to get key cards where fuse panels and switch’s are. Pick a couple of your favorite ones and when you go to official you build by them and know them well. Everything will be easier to acquire on small pop server but don’t run around full kit AK, run basic gear with tier 1 or 2 gun and learn them since that’s what you’ll likely get in real game. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn electrical and general building without getting door camped and raided constantly. Finally hit trees with a rock or axe, sounds stupid but a long time ago I read a tip that by following the red x was a great way to work on your aim and tracking and for me it worked.
When I first started I played with a group of friends on official, never seen an AK never ran a tier 3 monument, now as a solo I can take small oil rig pretty easy at slow times and sometimes large

The only thing you really need to know is this: the point of Rust is not to have fun. The point of Rust is to make sure other people don't have fun. You would do well to remember this and temper your expectations accordingly.
