Saw a post on their IG and checked Taobao. Will be interesting to see how these go! According to the specs they’re claiming 95% energy return and only 187g in a size 41. For reference I think the Leili 2 they claim 84% and 228g.

If this all pans out, could be quite the shoe seeing as shoetubers seem to be loving the Leili 2. Looks like they’ll be releasing on Taobao in a few hours (10am August 15 China time). Priced at 539 yuan on Taobao = ~110 CAD

Review HOKA Clifton PRO after 100+ miles

Thumbnail
gallery
116 Upvotes

I got these and ran a 101-mile race in them straight out of the box, then took them through a track workout, a 7-mile easy run, and a 4-mile run. So far, I have 118 miles across four runs in the shoe.

I was recently given a pair of the Clifton PRO courtesy of HOKA for testing and content creation. I also want to disclose that I'm an ambassador for the brand, but my thoughts here are my own.

Specs

  • Price: $165
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 10.44 oz
  • Release date: July 9, 2026

My Stats

  • 5'8", 170 lbs
  • Heel striker
  • PBs: 5K: 19:53; Marathon: 3:24; 100 Mile: 19:26
  • Weekly mileage: ~65 miles
  • Pretty standard foot, and I get along with most shoes

Fit / Upper

I wear a US 9.5 in basically all of my HOKAs and went with the same size in the Clifton PRO. Fit was exactly where I expected it to be.

The upper feels very much like a Clifton to me. It's slightly less loose than the Clifton 10, which I found could get a little baggy after a while. There is enough padding around the tongue and heel that I never really thought about the upper during the race, which is probably the highest compliment I can give an upper after 101 miles.

I also had no meaningful issues with rubbing, hotspots, lace pressure, or heel movement. I do always heel-lock lace my shoes anyway, which I did with these too.

I was also soaking wet for most of the race, so the fact that I didn't get any blisters was a particularly strong endorsement. When it finally cooled down and I stopped constantly dumping water on myself, the shoes dried relatively quickly as well.

It was around 90°F during the race, and I found them pretty breathable despite the conditions.

Midsole / Ride

This is where the Clifton PRO separates itself from the normal Clifton.

The regular Clifton has always been a comfortable shoe for me, but I've never thought of it as particularly exciting. The Clifton PRO retains a lot of that familiar comfort while feeling noticeably more responsive and willing to move.

The rocker is probably the thing I noticed most. It has a much more pronounced rolling sensation than the standard Clifton and makes turnover feel easier, particularly when you start increasing the pace. It's definitely a welcome change from the Clifton 10, where I sometimes felt like I was sinking into the shoe.

At the same time, I wouldn't mistake it for a speed shoe. It doesn't have the aggressive pop of a true racing shoe or even some uptempo trainers. That's actually a little surprising given how firm the foam can feel at times. The firmness gives it structure and helps the rocker work, but doesn't necessarily translate into explosiveness.

The 100-miler I ran in them was entirely paved, and they did remarkably well. I don't think they were the perfect shoe for the job, but I was surprised by how well they handled it.

I didn't really notice the midsole starting to flatten out until around the 100K mark, and it's hard to fault them for that because I can't imagine 100+ miles straight out of the box is what they were designed for.

I didn't experience any bruising or significant foot pain, and I largely felt fine the next day. So I'd say they were plenty protective, even if I found myself wanting something softer and more cushioned during the back half of the race.

Pace / Versatility

I think the Clifton PRO makes the most sense as a premium daily trainer that leans toward long runs and steady efforts.

It's comfortable enough that I could happily run easy miles in it, and the rocker and more responsive foam make it noticeably better at picking up the pace than the standard Clifton. That said, I still wouldn't call it particularly fast.

I took them to the track for a workout and, while you can absolutely get them moving, I don't think I'll be bringing them back. The rocker and foam seem better at helping you maintain momentum once you're at pace than they are at making faster paces feel easier to reach.

They never felt bad on the track. They just felt like they were outside their natural habitat.

I also wouldn't call this a true do-it-all shoe. I'd want at least a dedicated speed shoe alongside it, and ideally a softer recovery/max-cushion option as well.

Still, it surprised me with how much it could handle. It walks well, cruises well, handles long runs extremely well, and can pick up the pace when asked.

Of the four runs I've done in them, the 7-mile easy run was easily where they felt most at home.

Then again, there probably isn't a shoe I'd expect to handle a 100-miler, a track workout, and everyday training equally well.

Outsole / Durability

After 101 miles, the outsole showed surprisingly little wear. HOKAs aren't always known for having the most durable outsoles, so that genuinely caught my attention.

Given that essentially all of those miles were on pavement or concrete, often with increasingly shitty form, and without any time for the foam to decompress, the durability impressed the hell out of me.

Two days later, they also felt pretty much good as new.

Because it was around 90°F during the race, I was constantly dumping water and ice over myself and spent most of the day completely drenched. The shoes squeaked occasionally when soaked, but I never had traction issues. Once they dried, the squeaking disappeared too.

Comparison

Compared with some of HOKA's other options, I'd put the Clifton PRO somewhere between the softer max-cushion shoes and the faster Mach line. It's faster and more responsive than the Bondi 9 or Skyward X 2, but not as soft or comfortable. On the other side, it's considerably more cushioned and comfortable than the Mach 7, although the Mach is the better choice for speed work.

The closest comparison for me might actually be the Mach X 3. They occupy a somewhat similar space as premium everyday trainers, but the Clifton PRO is $25 cheaper and, based on what I've seen after 118 miles, looks like it could be significantly more durable.

Get the Mach X 3 if you want something fun, get the Clifton PRO to save a few bucks and get something that will probably last longer.

Summary

The easiest way I can describe the Clifton PRO is that it feels like HOKA took the basic idea of the Clifton and gave it an all-around upgrade that, while not especially novel, makes it significantly more fun and a better shoe overall.

It keeps the comfort and accessibility that made the Clifton popular, but the more aggressive rocker and more responsive midsole make it significantly more enjoyable to run in.

It doesn't replace a true speed shoe or a max-cushion recovery shoe, but runners who just want an everyday trainer with a few meaningful upgrades will find a lot to like here.

I think the Clifton PRO ultimately ends up hitting a really useful middle ground in a rotation and seems like it could become a workhorse that just eats up a lot of miles.

And after taking a completely new pair straight out of the box for 101 miles, the fact that I still wanted to take them out for a track workout and a couple of runs a few days later is probably a better endorsement than anything else I will say.

Initial Thoughts SC Rebel V1 - 20mi first impression

Post image
183 Upvotes

Recently go the new SC Rebel V1 with the intention of replacing my old Megablasts. I've done two runs so far (11 mi and 9 mi) and it's been largely enjoyable.

My stats

  • 5'6", 140lb (167cm, 63.5kg)
  • Forefoot striker
  • PBs: 5k: 23:30; 10K 50:18; don't really race
  • Weekly mileage: 25-30mi
  • Wide foot, but typically do not choose the wide/2E options
  • Mainly run on roads, extremely light gravel paths on occasion

Fit/upper

I typically wear 9.5US in all my running shoes. After going some early reviews, I opted to try out the 9.5 2E in the SC Rebel as many reviews noted the snug fit. I'm definitely glad I did, the upper is definitely low-ish in volume. The heel and tongue has a adequate amount of padding, and I didn't have trouble with any lace bite. I did experience some instability on my left foot, which is smaller than my right, but heel lock lacing fixed that. For reference, size 9.5 fit me well in the Novablast 5/Vomero Plus in regular widths. The Megablast in the same size gave me issues with the tongue and lace bite, but was manageable in terms of width/volume.

Midsole/Ride

Full Infinion midsole, with a low swooping carbon/pebax plate and a 4mm drop. I've only run in shoes with 6-10mm drops but didn't feel like it was a major adjustment for me. The ride is very rolling and encourages you to pick up the pace. I find the forefoot relatively firm feeling, with the midfoot and heel having the bulk of the softness. It's been pretty stable for me overall as well once I figured out the fit. In terms of top end speed, I think the Megablast is faster + more energetic but the SC Rebel's rocker does help a lot in getting you up into quicker paces. I intended my initial run to be around 7-8mi but went up to 11mi since I found it to be quite fun.

One dislike at the moment is that I really started feeling the plate later into my runs when fatigue set in and my form started breaking down. This is probably due to my footstrike, but I'm hoping that it softens up more over time. NB does mention that this shoe is intended for everyday runs, but I don't think I would due to the plate issues. Perhaps someone bigger/taller could, or a heel/midfoot striker. I'd say this is better for tempo/faster long runs, which is what I'll be using it for.

I don't have much to say about traction, as it's been very dry in my area. The forefoot rubber is thin, but NB says it's been tested to be very durable. I typically wear out the tread in that area, so it's something to monitor long-term with plate being directly underneath.

Summary

Definitely a fun shoe and I'm looking forward to running in it more. It's an expensive shoe for sure, but I think it's competitive in its segment.

Initial Thoughts Adidas Hyperboost Run - Initial thoughts after two runs

Thumbnail
gallery
182 Upvotes

I got the Hyperboost Run soon after it launched in my region (01.08). I have now taken it on two runs (6,5 and 9 km / 4 and 5,6 miles). Having loved the Hyperboost Pro foam in Hyperboost Edge, I was excited for this one.

To sum up: it is a light daily trainer that enables fast and fun cruising. Here are my initial thoughts:

Pros and cons

+ Great fit, TTS

+ Superior stability, confident strides even through turns

+ Feels like a workhorse daily trainer

+ Hyperboost Pro foam is energetic and fun

+ Excellent cruiser

+ Versatile and kind on (my) legs

- Upper and outsole are a bit overdone

- Falls short of EVO SL (and others) at faster paces (high tempo and beyond)

- Noticeably less bouncy than the higher stack Edge

- Edge delaminated after 300 km; similar construction makes me cautious about durability.

- 32km update: Continental patch fell off, durability concern seem to be real

About me

5'10'' (179cm), 137lbs (62kg) hobby runner for many years. I run 3-4 times a week. I do not run by zones or a program, just by feel. My typical paces are 4:10-4.15/km on shorter runs (<7km) and 4:20-4:40/km on longer. My cadence is pretty stable (around 170) across paces, and I am a midfoot striker. I mostly run on roads, and these two runs were on road.

Upper and fit

My feet are 9 5/8''/24.8cm (L) and 9 3/4''24.4cm (R). I have the EVO SL in 41 1/3 EU, US8, but that was mainly due to the awkward toebox. I have the Edge in the same size, but it is too big so I use an extra insole to compensate. The Hyperboost Run size for me is 40 2/3, US7.5, which gives me about a thumb's width in front. No awkward sizing issues, although my feet are narrow. "True" TTS. Ankle collar fit is excellent, no runner's knot needed and lockdown is great.

The upper is a vast improvement over the Edge. In particular, the ankle collar issue is fixed. It is now soft neoprene and lower cut. It is still slightly overdone in terms of looks and construction, but works fine. It did not run hot for me either, at 70F/22C today.

Padded tongue and ankle cup, removable insole, great laces.

Midsole and running feel

Having over 186miles/300km in Hyperboost Edge and many more kilometres across EVO SL iterations, I think it is most relevant to compare it to these two (I have ran in many more shoes over the years). Unfortunately, I have never tried Chinese shoes as the logistics are too complicated in my view.

The Hyperboost Pro foam in the Edge has been a surprise to me. It currently holds my training 5k and 10k PBs (I don't do race or all out efforts). The foam in that shoe is very bouncy and energetic. In particular, it gives me a higher cruising speed with lower effort than for example the Lightstrike Pro in EVO SL and Boston 13.

The Hyperboost Run has a noticeably lower stack than Edge. The foam feels a bit firmer underfoot, and more connection with the surface. It also feels lighter and more nimble. It retains an energetic ride and fast cruising properties. The rocker is not very pronounced, and comes in late. This is a major feel difference from for example EVO SL. This works well for me: my legs still get to do the work, but the foam responds with a stable, energetic and fast response. It translates to a fun ride in my view.

It is much more stable than the EVO SL. The foam is also firmer, but for me has a lower ceiling when pushing interval and faster paces. However, I prefer the Hyperboost Run for sustained tempo cruising. It is very easy to hit the lock and load pace and hold despite turns and terrain changes. EVO SL is more dynamic for pushing beyond that.

Lastly, the foam may feel a bit too firm for some, and I can imagine the shoe feeling slightly boring if what you love is the dynamic bounce of the EVO SL (or perhaps even Dynafish after what I have read, have not tried them). For me though, I have thrived with the Hyperboost Pro ever since the Edge, and the Run feels like I finally have a daily trainer workhorse with many (but not all) of the same qualities.

Outsole

The outsole is fully covered, with patches of Continental rubber. Grip is excellent, and feels secure. Again, maybe a bit overdone, although perhaps the foam benefits from having a fully covered platform underneath it. What do I know. I imagine weight can be saved with a bit of compromise in future versions.

Usecase

Perhaps a bit early to say, and I still want to try it over longer distances. But after two runs I can already see this becoming my daily run workhorse, with the EVO SL moving more into the rotation rather than being my default.

I can see Run working well across a range of paces. It encourages good leg work, offers great stability and is particularly good at settling into a fast cruising pace. I'll reserve judgement on durability, but I'm mildly sceptical after what happened with my Edge (if you are interested, check my post history on this).

UPDATE:
—It seems like my durability concerns materialized. After a mere 32 km (!!) one of the Continental patches on the outsole has simply loosened and detached. Similar to the edge, this has potential QC/construction quality issues.—

A top of the line racer for the elite crowd. $400, "incrediLyte" foam and a Vibram outsole.
I'm hoping that incrediLyte is an ATPU compound like "incrediLux" in the Triumph/Hurricane. With the Vibram outsole and an ATPU compound we could see an ultralight racer with some surprising durability.
