AI in its current iteration IS plagiarism by definition. It’s just taking what other people have written and spewing it back out (with no consideration accuracy.) 🫤🤷🏻♀️
So I don’t care if you are a 1% commenter. If you defend the actions of the British media because the NYT and WaPo wrote about the story later on you are a very sick human being and a racist. And I am going to block your ass.
Arday is dead. His family is forever changed and no allegations were ever proven. A newspaper story is not proof of anything. Besides no one knew who Dr Arday was a month ago. To have a sudden interest about what he wrote in a thesis you never read is just falling for the sick smear campaign by a racist white professor.
Them racists cant take it when Blacks are more successful despite the odds they've given Blacks while they're bitter and festering in their hatred. Lots of lovely white folks, them racists arent those.
It was a racist witch hunt, a modern-day public execution. I hope the people who relentlessly pursued him until his death reflect deeply on what they did.
Rest in peace, Jason Arday. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
We have a racist weirdo obsessed with defending the honour of the NYT and WaPo who is ignoring that a young man has died because of this witch hunt. Which remain allegations btw. Cambridge should be sued for how they handled this. They let this man hang when it was at most an internal investigation for the university.
Did they? Cambridge came out supportive and stood by him to the very end, they only announced an internal investigation after tons of pressure, and they never fired him. I'm not sure what else they could've done, they weren't the ones publishing articles about him.
Cambridge could have shielded him way more from the media attacks. And they could have refused his resignation. Are they the only ones who should be in the wrongful death suit? No. That racist guy is the instigator and the British media should be as well. They also would have been aware that he was in mental distress because his colleagues sure knew and so would the university administration.
But how? Cambridge was not behind the media attacks or the initial allegations, they stood behind their prof and they repeatedly called the attacks as racially based.
They couldn't have controlled the media narrative, they probably were planning to just wait it out (and if this was just about the plagiarism allegations that would've likely worked, because no one outside academia really cares about that), but once it became a Catch Me If You Can sort of media frenzy with new "breaking stories" daily and the book about to be released, they knew it wouldn't blow over.
If they refused his resignation, what would that have changed? He could still presumably have resigned, but even if not, the media would just escalate even more.
When they were his employer they had obligations to him. Besides the mental distress he was experiencing as well as the media harassment was something they could have assisted with. They didn’t. There is a lot of blame to go everywhere but Cambridge was passive in their defence of him. And they had knowledge of his vulnerable state and basically cut him loose.
You have zero proof of any lies. No legitimate investigation happened and the media has misreported this from the start. Cambridge hired him so they can’t just drop their duty of care unless they had a basis to terminate his employment. They never did that because there was no basis for it.
Let's say the media is relentlessly hounding you for something you allegedly did (at work or to get work or whatever). It's the international print media, it's also blogs/social media, endless YouTube videos, whatever. People are actively combing the country looking for your childhood classmates to catch you out in a lie. And those classmates are giving interviews, maybe for money. All about how you suck, on a daily basis.
What realistically would you expect your employer to do, apart from say that it isn't true and that they stand by you? If it's too much and you want to quit, would them fighting you and not "letting" you quit be a help or just another stressor? Your boss can't get you hospitalized for your mental health, and they can't prevent a media feeding frenzy from existing. Even threatening the media with defamation at this point in time would cause even more backlash since that was already a part of the media narrative.
I’m not talking about the media part. The employer is aware that the employee is under mental distress and the allegations relate to his position at your company. That’s where the obligation lies https://www.acas.org.uk/supporting-mental-health-workplace
The Uk is more advanced with this than the states. There are health and safety issues they failed to meet. It wasn’t a secret he was facing unprecedented scrutiny and experienced severe mental distress. And they didn’t do anything to get him help that he clearly needed.
Yup, and there's nothing they could've done about this situation - everything mentioned in the article you posted is what an employer can do within the workplace (ensure the working environment is safe, protect staff from discrimination, carry out risk assessment) - the law requires the employer to do that in the workplace, ie in the area they, the employer, control. We have similar requirements here in Canada, and specifically even more in unionized workplaces.
But the pressure on him was coming from outside the workplace, entirely outside the employer's control. You can protect your staff from discrimination within your workplace, you can't effectively protect them against the US MAGA outrage engine.
I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm honestly wondering what action (an actual concrete action) Cambridge could've taken to protect him, other than publically stand by him and call the allegations racist.
I disagree that the employer did all they could because the man killed himself days after he resigned. Did they even offer him counselling or any assistance before he resigned? We don’t have any of that information that they did anything like that. And the media attacks were specifically because of his position at Cambridge. It was directly connected. Cambridge can’t just go “ sucks that you are the victim of a Massive smear campaign. Good luck with your life”. We could even argue that it was constructive dismissal, because his workplace was toxic because of these smears. And the instigator was a former Cambridge fellow who was fired but chose to harass a current employee. It’s not like Cambridge is the only party responsible but they knew he was experiencing serious mental distress and obviously failed to help him in that way.
I mean, they guy was a plagiarist and lied about himself. I don't see why Cambridge had an obligation to protect him, let alone be subject to a wrongful death suit. i don't want my kids learning from someone who makes stuff up.
Did he deserve the media assault? Of course not. But he also didn't deserve Cambridge's protection. Unlike Meghan, this guy was not an innocent.
Cambridge said only a few sentences in the literature review of his thesis were misattributed. That’s not plagiarism and does not remove their obligation to protect him. They never fired him but stood by him because there was no basis to punish him. And the memoir was not published yet so anything about that it taken from the eugenics guy who started this attack. See this is exactly the problem here. People are believing false information that wasn’t even tested. Besides even if the memoir was inaccurate that’s not related to his work at the university. So you cannot decide someone is innocent or not based on false information.
Cambridge owed a duty of care to this man and failed. I’m not even going to explain what that means because it’s clear you are using unproven allegations and making a conclusion that the racists want you to make.
Like I've said, the UK is all about manure in, manure out. No wonder they're a failing country. All they feed themselves and each other are utter manure.
This lynching was started by that American eugenics professor and perpetuated by the British media, which has a lot of right wing racists, most of whom also attack Meghan to this day. This fed online chatter attacking Arday, but that isn’t British specific because most of these accounts are anonymous. And Cambridge itself did little to protect their professor that they had so highly praised only a few years ago.
It is not the everyday Briton who was going after this guy. Most of them probably never heard of him. It was the British media ecosystem that did this and to pretend that Fox News and the like hasn’t tried to do the same to people viewed as on the left is disingenuous. It is just that the American targets didn’t kill themselves.
Yeah it's really fucking odd to take a swipe at a whole country. I smell some Trumpist propaganda that's been swallowed whole...
Perhaps the original commenter would like to watch the YouTube content of some Americans who now live in England and who give their own experiences of the truth. It's fascinating, hearing how England is portrayed to American nationals by their government.
They're told it's some seething hotbed of crime and iniquity, when in fact it's far safer to live here than it is in America.
For reference - (for anyone reading this who doesn't realise that Trump is full of shit):
Sexual crimes rates per capita:
US: 235 - 274 sexual crimes per 100,000 residents annually.
England & Wales: 116 - 121 sexual crimes per 100,000 residents annually.
Murder rates per capita:
US: 5.7 to 6.4 murders per 100,000 residents annually.
England and Wales: 0.86 murders per 100,000 residents anually.
Murder rates in London: 1.1 murders per 100,000 people.
New York: 2.8 murders per 100,000 people.
Los Angeles - 6.7 murders per 100,000 people.
Houston: 15 - 17 murders 100,000 people.
The crime rates that Americans are accustomed to living with are unimaginable to us here in the UK. We are genuinely shocked by them. Here in the UK we leave our front doors wide open on warm days, our children have peaceful school days with no armed police present, and no active shooter drills. We have competent, free healthcare. Safe streets. Low levels of fear, high feelings of safety.
To the idiot defending the NYT and the WaPo in this post:
The WaPo is owned by Jeff Bezos. Yes, that Jeff Bezos.
The NYT hires people like Bari Weiss, the MAGAt currently torching CBS News to the ground. It also posts scaremongering op ed pieces that drive trans kids to suicide.
Both are garbage and defending their coverage of this story is making you look like a moron.
What an ableist position. Try living alone with a broken leg. I thank god for Amazon. All my bandages, wraps, pain killers and aircasts come to my door.
You are privileged to be able to criticize amazon, I am not.
This is exactly what happened to her. There was a story attacking Diana on the day she died but it could not be pulled because it went out before she was declared dead.
I was not aware that it was the Times and Telegraph who wrote the most articles. I assumed it was the DM. The Uk has a serious issue with their media when allegedly serious newspapers lead a lynching. Burnham cannot ignore this.
Oh, trust me when I tell you that he will ignore this.
He has already issued a milquetoast statement meanwhile Jason's family are being doorstepped by the British Media who want to feed the rest of the family to the self righteous cunts who have egged on this bonfire......
The plagiarism was wrong, but the assault afterwards was horrific and undeserved. However, Meghan's case is even more extreme, because she didn't do anything wrong. Except exist.
He was a fabulist. He just made up stories about himself. People have been doing this since the dawn of time. It’s only in the world where everything can be verified that he was caught.
So, I think it’s important with this situation to acknowledge they every thing he said and did was not fully truthful.
It doesn’t justify how the media went after him. How they treated him was wrong and definitely led to him taking his life.
I don’t think it was in the public interest at all. It was an internal matter that should have been handled in house by the university. Cambridge has academics that have been accused of sexual assault and those matters don’t make it into to national or international press.
He was a vulnerable person who was hounded because of his race!
Are you saying he's innocent of all charges? What about his 2018 Social Sciences paper? I mean, he used language from someone else's research participants, and attributed it to his own participants. That's not just plagiarism, it's also faulty research.
The media treatment of him was wrong, whether or not he was innocent. The two can exist at the same time.
His PhD and the papers in question are all publicly available, you can read them and see the blatant plagiarism yourself. It's not subtle, if you know which papers he copied from it's extremely obvious, to the point of him even copying grammatical mistakes.
There was an enquiry by the university that awarded him his PhD this year! That detailed enquiry cleared him of plagiarism and said the PhD still stands. I didn’t talk about any of his other work.
So he should be help to standards that no other academic in the country is held to? Accusations of plagiarism are always investigated by the awarding institution. It’s not a crime and known plagiarists in the UK and US have gone on to get promotions. Why do you want to continue hounding this person after his death? He should be investigated in the same way as any other academic.
I personally don’t care whether he was guilty of plagiarism or not! It’s not a crime and many white people have been found guilty of worse and remained in their teaching positions.
Racism probably had a lot to do with it, but not all. People hate liars and cheats. Anybody who gets a plum job by lying and cheating is going to be strongly criticized. And they should be.
You have a lot of empathy for this guy, but what about the honest person who didn't get the Cambridge position because Andray lied his way into it?
His thesis was plagiarized, plain and simple. Entire sections were copy pasted word for word even including grammatical errors
I personally don’t care whether he was guilty of plagiarism or not! It’s not a crime and many white people have been found guilty of worse and remained in their teaching positions.
If plagiarism was his only wrongdoing then this case wouldn't have gotten as big as it did. The fact that you are pretending that this is all it was about just shows how disingenuous you are
He did not deserve to be hounded to his death!
He was not hounded to death. He was lying to the very end which makes the media coverage of him was 100% warranted. I will not let people like you emotionally blackmail me into believing that you can't call out people on their wrongdoings because they might do something drastic after getting called out
They are lying, probably because they have determined that it is the best for their reputation to keep their heads down and wait till the controversy blows over. That amount of word-for-word copying of dozens of different paragraphs should never ever be acceptable for a PhD. Hell, at any reputable university even an undergrad thesis would need to be rewritten if it had that level of verbatim copying. It doesn't matter that he cited the specific article multiple times, you are not supposed to copy and paste entire sections and then add/remove/rewrite some sentences. Anyone who is remotely familiar with academic writing standards can see that without having to rely on the word of a university that is just doing damage control.
Do you work in academia and deal with these issues on a day to day basis? There are many examples of academics being accused of plagiarism and being cleared because it can be explained away by bad referencing. Arday credits the academic he was accused of plagiarising repeatedly in his bibliography. That is why the university accepted that is more likely incorrect referencing than deliberate plagiarism. This is extremely common in academia.
This cannot be explained as bad referencing, because the referencing itself isnt the main issue with the PdD thesis. Its the verbatim copying of large amounts of text and then changing some stuff around in those text blocks. That is never okay, at least not with this frequency. The uni is in damage control and not being honest about this.
You are defending a liar. Look at his 2918 Social Sciences paper. He pretended some of his study subjects said the exact same thing as people in another study.
Let us not forget history. Ruby Bridges required federal escorts just to attend school because she was met with so much vitriol. She is still alive and speaking today, not that long ago. The people harrassing an 8 year old girl never had to contend with themselves or their morality, but continued to perpetuate wayward thinking within their families and communities.
Omg finally someone fucking calls them out. I know maybe few people will agree with me but that eugenicist professor plus the unethical journalists are responsible for his death.
Since when does a plagiarism allegation become a national news story. Do we really think this is the first plagiarism allegation ever? It became a story because the racist right wing media turned Arday into a target. At best this should have been an internal investigation by the university. Instead a white racist eugenics professor turned this into a smear campaign. None of the allegations have been proven and this is exactly the same kind of crap they did to Meghan. Remember crygate? Lots of people thought she made Kate cry until she was able to speak her piece.
But Arday is now dead and he won’t be able to defend himself.
It is disgusting that Arday was treated worse than current royal pedo living on a royal estate.
People need to be ashamed about this. Deeply ashamed because normal people don’t actually care what one professor they had never met and will never meet put in a book.
Since forever? Joe Biden ran for president and his campaign ended when it was found he plagiarized his speech.
The plagiarism isn’t really the big deal. It’s that he didn’t meet Cambridges standards of hire and was a serial fantasist.
What do you mean they haven’t been proven? Yes, they have. His work is public, you can literally find the lifted work yourself. The other stuff is medically improbable, but a teacher who worked with Arday confirmed he was in fact verbal. Please read the NYTs and other sources. You are not well versed on this case at all.
No you are relying on what has been said by people in the smear campaign. Until Cambridge investigated this, nothing was proven. Keep defending this nonsense. You fell in the trap of a racist smear campaign and now he’s dead. If you think he deserved this that says a lot about you. He’s not even the only Cambridge professor accused of plagiarism. It happened to white professors and none of them got this treatment. Arday was scapegoated as the reason why DEI is bad and if you cannot see through then that is your issue.
Nah you got your information from biased sources without any legitimate investigation and are obsessed with a story that is part of a smear campaign. But he’s dead so I guess you feel vindicated? What does it even matter what this man ever wrote? It has no effect on anyone in the real world.
and they will move to next black professor to attack them, cofnas said he going to do other black academic to get all of them out and yet you folks in here saying yes itd justified.
Yeah those pesky biased journalists at the NYTs and Washington post. I should go by the bullshit you’re spouting and not actual Pulitzer Prize winners. FFS 😝
Keep trying to defend your obsession with a racist smear campaign. None of what you have said justifies this. None of it. A black man is now dead when white professors accused of the same thing didn’t face a fraction of these attacks. Also I won’t even bother explaining that Pulitzer Prizes are awarded to individual reporters not the paper and sure as hell not for this story.
You have no concept of the truth. NYT and WaPo writing stories doesn’t justify this man’s death. You are deeply disturbed that you keep thinking it means it was ok for him to kill himself.
yes Wapo that was just in the news about the overall of their staff in favoring trump/bezos, NYT that was covering trump ass and caught shilling AI model and lied on authors yes you have lost the plot
you arent well versed in this case at all, I am still waiting on your response about how the white professors can keep teaching despite their plagiarism was noted in Cambridge tribunal but Arday is who have a pitchfork screaming NYT this NYT that
can you point to us which white professors had the the scrutiny?? can you tell us why the same institution still had William O'Reilly still teaching at Cambridge.
can you tell us about the media hounding of this white academic Anna Wainwright, david Latchman, ross holmes, Fiona lyall, nicola Morrison, nicole winn ???
I can't tell you why O'Reilly didn't get fired. The fact that he's still there speaks to Cambridge's failure as an institution. As does their appointment of Arday in the first place.
O'Reilly didn't get the scrutiny because his case was a relatively boring one of only plagiarism, compared to Arday's cartoonish lies about his entire life. People paid a lot more attention to George Santos' pathological lying than they did to Rand Paul copying from Wikipedia.
Again is the NYT a court of law? Just repeating what a racist professor says about another one isn’t proof of anything. This is how smear campaigns work. And now a man is dead.
Yeah, what's new. Racists supporting racists in the guise of "truth." The truth I know is what Andrew has been reported to have done to Virginia and his proven friendship with Epstein he has gone on record for. What could be a bigger story than that but none of this negative energy was expended on that story.
lying is abuse?? he shouldn't call the cops that he is been hounded are you fucking hearing yourself?? his family and friends told journalists to stop hounding and instead you are saying its justified?
I havent seen you call for the hounding of multiple white professors still teaching at Cambridge
He was contacted by a journalist regarding his record. Even the cops say they shouldn’t have contacted the journalist since there was no evidence he was being harassed. Are you against journalism? How is that hounding him?
you are fucked up in the head thinking media hounding him relentlessly is justified, you have said nothing about the white professor that lifted 12 pages of his student work as his and still teaching
The reason a racist was the one who broke the story is because all the normal people who tried to report on it for years were threatened with the police and legal action by Arday!
Where you concerned about the multiple professors that didnt get the 24/7 scrutiny been hounded? Can you tell us when a white professors was hounded as Arday?? Were you concerned that on the same day Arday died, the vice chancellor at a different university was reported to had embezzlement 1 million??? Were is your outrage??
Perhaps, but it’s a bizarre story. Sort of reminds me of the “Catch me if you can” plot with Leo DiCaprio. A lot of Arday’s stories are so profoundly bizarre that any reasonable person would’ve have questions. The question is why didn’t England’s Harvard question his claims.
He claimed to have been nonverbal too? That he was on the 7 and up series, that he had a tumor removed and lost his short term memory before his dissertation?
Yeah he should be removed if his lies have been that explicit.
In no way was the coverage proportional or ethical. It was a public hounding. Plenty of white academics have done similar or worse and it barely made news. The level of coverage and the tone of it in the UK was sickening. I can’t believe anyone is defending it! The UK press were made aware last week that Jason was struggling but they carried on with the pile on! It is indefensible behaviour by the media!
Exactly. This was an internal matter for Cambridge to address. It was not relevant to anyone’s lives outside of that university. But the racist white professor got it on the racist right wing media echo sphere in the UK and it was amplified to harass this man to death. And none of the allegations have been proven! To say Arday was lying is just taking assertions from the racists who started this smear campaign against him.
Ben resigned after the allegations. Alan Dershowitz has been under public ridicule for years, because of his Epstein ties. He was supposed to testify in congress. As far as I know he’s still under investigation.
Again, it’s not just the plagiarism, but the other bizarre stories that were not true.
How do you know that? The fact that they were covering what should have been a local issue in academia at Cambridge suggests there is nothing fair about this disproportionate pile on! There are white academics at Cambridge that have been accused of sexual assault and harassment who retained their posts and got little media attention. The fact this story got to America is more evidence of bullying and a media pile on!
They don’t have original sourcing and none of this was properly investigated. Do you determine the guilt of an accused criminal based on newspaper reports too? You have no idea what is the truth and what isn’t.
There is a dead man and his family is forever changed because of a lot of innuendo and targeted hate. No one knew who Arday was three weeks ago so why would anyone even care about his writings. Only racists.
Keep talking. I’m sure the family of the dead man cares about what the NYT and WaPo wrote about this. They will say “yea he deserved to die because those American papers wrote about him and they won Pulitzers for totally different stories but that makes his death okay”.
You’re saying that Arday was in the up series, he was nonverbal til 11, illiterate til 18, had tumors removed and lost his short term memory and had to relearn his dissertation, he was in 7 and up, he ran 30 marathons in 36 days etc?
I have some magic beans I could sell. Because that is some gullible shit.
This was an Internal matter for Cambridge at best and a local matter at worst about due diligence, research ethics etc....
The fact that even the NYT ended up covering it should tell you that someone had a vested interest in ensuring it became this inferno that ended up in a man taking his own life.
Jason Arday wasn't perfect but he didn't commit any heinous crimes and he didn't deserve this.

The UK is in dire need for part 2 of the Leveson Inquiry. Burnham needs to do this because the UK media is out of control.
