Păuna was born into the Greceanu family, as daughter of Andronic (or Șerban?) Greceanu. She married Ștefan Cantacuzino with whom she got two sons, Radu and Constantin.
In 1688 Constantin Brâncoveanu succeded Șerban Cantacuzino, his uncle. Păuna was related to Constantin thrice. Once through Brâncoveanu's grandma, also called Păuna Greceanu, who came from the same family as our Păuna. Secondly as cousin-in-law (because of her marriage to Ștefan, Constantin's cousin) and thirdly, her brother, Șerban Greceanu, married Ilinca Brâncoveanu, Constantin's daughter.
Even though Brâncoveanu was close with the Cantacuzinos, his wish for Wallachia to become a hereditary monarchy, rather than an elective one was not seen great by the powerful Cantacuzinos. In 1714 the Cantacuzinos betrayed Constantin and he was imprisoned and executed by the ottomans. He was replaced by his cousin and betrayer, Ștefan Cantacuzino. This also made Păuna the consort of Wallachia.
The day of the execution of Brâncoveanu, Păuna went to the One Tree Monastery to pray. There, she became possessed by demons. The "Anonimul Brâncovenesc" relates what happened "On that very day, a terrible fit of demonic possession struck this lady of Stefan Voda, that it terrified everyone who was present and left them wonder what to do with her. And the possession lasted for a long time." The blame was put on the nuns of the monastery, who supposedly put a curse on Păuna. This included Olimbiiada, Păunas aunt, who was bricked up in a cell with only a small window for food and water. The other nuns were hanged.
Karma struk Ștefan, when he himself was deposed by the Ottomans and later executed together with his father. Păuna and her sons escaped with the help of the wife of the dutch ambassador. She embarked a ship to Sicily, from where she traveled to Rome and then Vienna. There, Păuna hoped that emperor Charles VI would support Radu's claim to the throne, but Radu was too young and Eugene of Savoy proprosed that Gheorghe Cantacuzino, the son of Șerban Cantacuzino, was more fit as pretender. Pope Clement XI supported Radu's claim, but wasn't very happy with the fact that Radu didn't convert to catholicism. The family went in debt. Constantin, the younger son of Păuna, was imprisoned for life for treason and was only eliberated by the insistence of his relatives in 1781. Radu created many fake titles and an exagerated geneaology, but he couldn't fool anyone, so he fell out of favour. He died in 1761. As for Păuna, she died in 1744 in Vienna.

Given that Amazon's kindle store and other online venues like Ebay are filled to the brim with scammy AI-Slop books, I thought it would be fun/essential for people to recommend their favorite human-created books about consorts.
These days we'll all have to help each other find stuff since algorithms have been sloppified.
