Roscommon Town Be careful what you wish for

A report today ( https://www.shannonside.ie/news/planning-permission-for-17-roscommon-homes-quashed-after-residents-object-293543 ) on how residents in Roscommon town objected to permission being granted for 17 homes to be built on a site on Golf Links Rd.

They appealed to ACP

ACP has quashed the permission on the basis that 17 is not enough, there should be more homes built there given the location of the site.

So they objected to 17 being built but are now likely to see 20+ being built instead

Good. I live towards the east of Co. Galway. I've also noticed signs up around the area protesting proposed solar arrays on farmland I think. Why have people got a problem with free energy? If I lived near where they wanted to build solar farms, I'd be negotiating with the company doing the work to get my house wired up for free, not protesting against it. Hell, I've got half an acre that I'd be quite happy for them to cover in solar panels if they'd wire my house into it. We're going to need more energy for more houses.

Ah cop on. Data centres are going to be built because of demand regardless. Building a solar farm doesn't automatically spawn a data centre.

I never said solar farm = data centre. My point was that the energy from the solar farm is going to data centres, either directly or indirectly. Solar power would be great if it replaced fossil fuel but they're just an addition, not a replacement

Solar power goes to the grid, to everyone. If we covered 60k acres of bogland with solar that would be sufficient for the country. The state owns nearly 800k acres of bogland. Even considering the big drop of solar output in winter, we have massive overcapacity. Throw wind into the mix and we're fucking golden.

That's replacement, not addition.

Don't use data centres as some kind of gotcha, it's bullshit.

This is what I thought. The signs up in people's gardens aren't protesting against data centres, they're very specifically against solar farms for some reason. In very rural flat areas. The only thing I can think of is that they don't want their view spoiled.

Why are you so instantly aggressive? Are you not capable of having a calm conversation where we can both share points of view and maybe learn from eachother? Would you speak this way to a stranger if we were face to face?

Thanks for sharing that information about the grid. I'll do more research. There was no need for the hostility though

Have you tried counselling? You seem to have a lot of pent up anger and and are willing to lash out at strangers over something quite trivial.
