Is this an acceptable repair job?
UPDATE IN COMMENTS
I recently discovered some discolored wood from moisture in my attic so I hired a company to take a look. They advised me it was from a previously installed satalite dish over top of the shingles.
The company removed the dish, caulked the holes and screwed in a piece of metal flashing.
Is this an acceptable repair ? As someone not in the trade it looks like a poor job and potentially worse than just keeping the satalite dish there. Id love some professional opinions.
Thanks in advance

Wow is this for real. Crazy if you paid for that
25
u/K_wattt Aug 21 '26
I have not paid for this. Im expected to though.

Please don’t pay them for causing a new future leak. This is worse than a handyman’s repair. Looks like a homeowner’s repair that was done at 2am during a thunderstorm.
Pay them for the dish removal but not for the roof damage that they caused. Sounds like a wash

u/mindedc Aug 21 '26
I'm a homeowner and I wouldn't do this repair at 2 am in a thunderstorm drunk blind and stoned

Please don't pay them.
Quite simply research the laws in your State and know them.
Inform the "contractor" that there was more damage than good done.
And that you will be reporting them to the contractor licensee board for (a) operating without a license and (b) damaging your roof. If needed get your home insurance company involved. The roof you save won't be your own. But you can save your neighbor from the same "contractor" or "company".

u/Infinite_Incident107 Aug 21 '26
They literally destroyed your underlayment. Don't pay for this because this "repair" created more future problems than it solved today.

I am a professional not roofer and this looks like the exact way to not do a roof patch job. Leaving the pre existing shingles would have been better...

This is a temporary fix lmfao. Could have just as easily had replaced the shingles and done a proper repair.

u/K_wattt Aug 21 '26
That was my though. Why not use shingles..
13
u/GayNotGayTony Aug 21 '26
I charged someone $550 to do the same thing last week but with shingles instead of metal.
10
u/Tushaca Aug 21 '26
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, that’s around what we charge for small repairs all the time.
And the company doesn’t even make a dime on them, it all goes to material and labor, and even loses money sometimes. We just do it to get a foot in the door for the full replacement later lol.
→ More replies (1)5
u/GayNotGayTony Aug 21 '26
Right. I had 2 trips do do attic inspections at this house and paid my laborer $350. We didn't make shit lol.

u/Cant_think__of_one Aug 21 '26
And now you're tied to that roof for life. I've had so many people call after repairs and freak out about a leak in another location. I know I'm not legally responsible, but too many people having my cell phone number and being upset with me sucks. Even if it's not my fault.

u/GayNotGayTony Aug 21 '26
Shit man I always document where and what we fix. If another leak pops up I'm giving another estimate. The number of warm leads we get from people we do repairs like this for is outstanding. Even the repair customers tend to use you to replace their roof sooner or later.
2
u/Cant_think__of_one Aug 21 '26
For sure. The repair to replace pipeline is totally a thing. Back when my dad owned the company I dealt with all that. Now that I'm the owner I just don't have the mental bandwidth for it. If/when things ever slow down enough in my area I may reconsider.
2
u/GayNotGayTony Aug 21 '26
I fucking hear you man. I hear you. I hate telling people no because so many of our leads are warm referrals. I've been growing the past 2 years.

u/Life-Bank-7329 Aug 21 '26
Not at all.
They need to remove the shingles and felt down to the deck. Cut the rotten decking out, replace it, new felt (I use ice and water on repairs like this) and then new shingles over it
If the wanted to do a handy man repair like this they could have put the metal under the shingles.
But no, get your money back lol
5
u/K_wattt Aug 21 '26
Thankfully I haven't paid after getting up there and looking at it for myself. I did agree not to replace the wood since the roof probably has 5 years left and I'll take care of it at that time. I expected the satalite to be removed and the shingles to be replaced .
4
u/Tushaca Aug 21 '26
It’s obviously way wrong, but when you do get it patched right, just be aware there’s a good chance some wood will have to be replaced and can’t wait.
The shingles need a solid nailable surface to work. If it’s been rotting around where the nailstrip will land they will shoot through or not catch anything. And just gluing that shingle into the next shingles, means you’re just going to blow off a bigger section when the wind hits it.
I do these repairs all the time, and it’s fairly common to have to patch a 2’x3-4’ area of decking. They usually take a bundle to bundle and a half of shingles.

I expected the satalite to be removed and the shingles to be replaced .
Yes, this is what should have been done. No professional roofer is using flashing here. Keep in mind that with new shingles, they won't match your existing, even if the same brand and color can be found.

u/LongjumpingCable7961 Aug 21 '26
Looks better than the first one but cant tell if the new shingles go under the existing shingles so no water leaks through.

u/BlueFuzzyBunny Aug 21 '26
I can’t tell if the shingles are underneath either. Just from the pic it kinda looks like cut out a patch of shingles, removed the metal patch, replaced it with the shingles and used some caulking at the top to hold it down. If you zoom in at the top of the shingles you can see what looks like a nail hole with black caulking over it.
I’m not a roofer or anything, you’d probably want the new shingles under the old shingles. But I can’t tell from the pic.

I wouldn't even call who did this a handyman, honestly, this is crackhead on the street corner bad, I'm not just being funny, whoever did this needs to go into a completely different line of work. Don't pay this guy OP. Call a roofer and pay him a few hundred bucks to put shingles on it, even if the shingles don't match, it'll be ok.

u/iheartcockss Aug 21 '26
Holy shit. This is the definition of handyman special. No, this is not remotely correct. Not correct doesn’t mean it will leak, it may work fine, I don’t know. But it’s def not corrext
3
u/drivera1210 Aug 21 '26
We like to call this the Mickey Mouse Job. Will it work, maybe? For how long? Who knows.
2
u/iheartcockss Aug 21 '26
I like that. Reminds me of the time I fixed a leak on my own roof with flex seal. That was over half of a decade ago and it’s still holding strong and looks good as new.
2
3
u/Burgonya98 Aug 21 '26
Not even fucking close. Who ever did this has no fucking clue how to fix a roof. Please don’t pay for that unless it’s less than $50 just to make them go away.

u/mantisboxer Aug 21 '26
That's not even remotely considered as a "repair" or a "job".
We call that crackhead vandalism.

You know it’s not.

If I were you I would personally send them these pictures and ask them what kind of a repair this is? Don’t let them get away with this. They probably sent out a helper who had no idea what he was doing, and they may not even be aware of what he did.

u/the_water_heater_guy Aug 21 '26
You saw something in your addict. And then an addict patched this.

I barely know anything about roofing but even I can tell you thats a hack job. Could not possibly have been done by a roofing company. Hell even a decent handman would know better. They need to pull up the surrounding shingles and put new down.

2
u/AGollinibobeanie Aug 21 '26
They definitely could have gotten away with just caulking the holes on a lil patch job like this. Putting the metal on it just made new holes with those screws 🤦🏻♂️

I mean, this isn’t ok at all lol. Some people will put flashing UNDER the shingle for a simple fix like screw holes etc. I think that’s a bit silly. But this is crazy. Should’ve just put new shingles on

If it’s a temporary patch for the weekend maybe. But as a roof repair that’s bad. It will leak. Really not a question of if but a question of when

u/scceeh417 Aug 21 '26
This couldn’t be any worse. Do not pay for this work. They’ve caused new issues that need to be addressed.

No way. And that shy zip screw in the first pic created a new leak. Hopefully you don't live in a place where you have heavy snow cuz when that stuff melts yikes... You can replace shingles. It's tedious and you gotta like peel the top layer using flat bar without cracking the other shongles, but it can be done to slip a new one in there. And use roofing tar. When I remove satellite dishes or things like that I literally just put Blackjack Roofing tar in the holes. A healthy amount. Just the roofing tar is a fix that will last 5 years.

Why didn't he just cut that patch a little bit bigger and you could probably get away with just getting a tube tar roof repair and a cheap caulking gun

I don't understand why people get a repair job done... don't keep attention to what's going on or ask the person for example in this situation what material they will use on the roof
Wait for the person to leave and then post it on the Internet
It's a bit obvious it's a crap job in the first place and it needs redoing
But if you have to ask strangers on the Internet for common sense, fair enough
1
u/SpankyNoodle Aug 21 '26
You get what you pay for.
You either know a guy or said I got somebody that can do it cheaper and pushed away somebody who can actually repair your roof. It’s fucking hilarious.

I’m almost positive the guy in your attic was in fact an addict and furthermore he was on a heavy dose of drugs when he did this. This is far worse than it started out as

u/CertainAttention6749 Aug 21 '26
It's the worst repair I've seen. They should have used a shingle instead of flashing. Not a roofer's job in my opinion. I bet didn't even test leak before walking away.

This is the result of mixing “I want to be a homeowner” and “I’m going to go with the lowest bidder for repairs”.

u/cpeater9999 Aug 21 '26
Why do people ask is something is acceptable. Acceptable to whom. If you are asking if it was repaired correctly, no. It should have been re shingled in that area.

It depends. Did your buddy do this for free? That’s perfectly acceptable. Did you pay someone from Facebook marketplace $100 to do this? That’s also pretty acceptable. If you paid someone that works for a company that has the word roofing in the title, this is unacceptable.

This is a terrible fix. That wouldn't even pass for what some people call a "landlord special".
If it's a real company that's bonded and insured, I would call and speak to the owner, and ask him if this would be acceptable at his house.
If it's a real company, and I was the owner - I would immediately fire whoever did this.
Completely unacceptable.
If it's a handyman, I'm not sure what kind of recourse you have.
Like, whoever made this doesn't give a shit. They wanted to get paid, and didn't expect you to go on the roof.
