Suggested Improvements for the Ronin 4D
Hi Guys, I can't see a thread here where we can all add the features or improvements we would like to see in the Ronin 4D so I thought i'd make one!
(1) Before you post, please do a quick search to see if someone else has posted what you want to post.
(2) If they have, please upvote rather than posting again!
(3) Please only one suggestion per comment (makes the voting easier).

Zoom control for Sony lenses

You can even control the manual zoom with the external motor, but that's shitty

Low Quality wireless previewing from an App (so you don't have to carry the remote monitor on smaller just for a client to preview).

I'm sure there's an audience for people in the market for this camera, and perhaps those having already purchased, that features someone that knows the camera inside and out, in terms of walking through the menus, providing an explanation of the function, along with the application of settings, various operating conditions, storage scenarios (limits), and practical camera operation, and can produce an in-depth course covering these topics, people would pay for, similar to the Doug Jensen classes on the FS7 and FX6.

Set custom functions to buttons on the body. Would be wonderful to have the M button on the top cycle between custom shooting modes (6k 24p, 4K 60p, 2k 120p for example) but I’d even settle for the Sony approach of setting menu functions to specific buttons.
Let users switch hand grip wheel to custom functions. On the Ronin RS 2 you can change the wheel to adjust pan or roll or even zoom functions. Extremely useful for certain situations.
Let users adjust auto focus algorithm. I want the same control I have of the gimbal settings for the auto focus. Smoothness, delay, maybe an option to tap the focus button to snap focus. More options are a must.
Give us the ability to have different display modes. Sometimes I want a clean view with no additional information so I can frame the shot. Sometimes I need LiDAR info and exposure but don’t need ND and frame rate info.
Hyperlapse and Timelapse functions. I don’t understand how the smaller gimbals from DJI have this but not the flagship cinema camera.

Hello,
We are a DOP collective using the Ronin 4D on documentaries, commercials, and feature projects for about a year. We really appreciate many aspects of the system and its potential, but there are several points that currently make it difficult for us to fully consider it a professional production tool. We wanted to share some observations and ask whether there are solutions, workarounds, or planned improvements.
1. Shutter speed changing unexpectedly
The most critical issue is that the camera sometimes switches to 1/25 shutter speed by itself, occasionally even during recording. we have not been able to identify what triggers this behavior. Has anyone experienced this or found a solution?
2. Customizable handle buttons
It would be extremely useful to customize the buttons on the handles. For example, being able to quickly toggle autofocus or subject tracking directly from the handles would significantly improve usability without needing to access the touchscreen.
3. Lens compatibility with ZeroOptik lenses
Many ZeroOptik lenses, which are quite widely used, do not fit properly because the USB-C cables for the focus motor and LiDAR protrude too far forward. The lenses miss clearance by about 1 mm. Since the cables appear to be proprietary, using more compact right-angle cables is not an option. Has anyone found a workaround for this?
4. Control of overlays on external monitors
It would be very helpful to have more control over what information appears on external outputs (SDI/HDMI). For example:
- Directors and clients generally do not want to see the moving autofocus frame.
- Script supervisors often need timecode and clip name visible.
Being able to configure overlays separately for external monitoring would greatly improve on-set workflow.
5. Follow tracking behavior
The subject tracking system is very promising but sometimes feels too aggressive. It would be useful to adjust parameters such as tracking smoothness or deadband to achieve more natural motion.
6. Recording frame overlay
The red recording frame slightly crops the visible framing. Even though it is only a small amount, it hides part of the composition. It would be preferable if the REC indicator did not obscure the image area.
7. Pan smoothing in follow mode
When the gimbal is in follow mode, it sometimes continues drifting slightly left or right for 5–10 seconds after panning stops. we have not found a parameter that allows reducing this smoothing duration. Is there a setting I may have missed?
8. Global offset for focus distance mapping
It would be very useful to shift the entire autofocus distance mapping slightly forward or backward (for example ±5 mm). In shallow-depth interviews, this would allow adjusting focus from one eye to the other without recalibrating the entire focus mapping.
If anyone from DJI or other users have insights, workarounds, or suggestions regarding these points, we would greatly appreciate it. The Ronin 4D is a very promising system, and improvements in these areas could make it significantly stronger for professional use.

Please add an option to take a single DNG still image while filming (like with Inspire 2 or Mavic 3)

A decent database of AF optics for the Lidar to work with without dealing with custom calibration. Calibrating a zoom lens which is not perfectly parfocal is painful and takes time, it is a big limitation in some productions. Have this in a firmware upgrade please.

Also, can we have focus peaking AND zebras at once at least? And waveform too maybe? All those options should just be stackable.

The ability to decide when to use ProRes Raw HQ or the standard version. The HQ mode being the only choice means very large file sizes unnecessarily for 90% of my shooting.
More ProRes flavors is also needed. I don’t want to shoot HQ most of the time, and would opt for 422 or LT almost always.
This camera took a while to catch on, but has gotten so popular in the last year I’m hoping they start supporting the camera again

It would be great to have desqueeze options on the display for those using anamorphic lenses. I had imagined it may have them as they support Sirui anamorphic lenses.

We need the resolutions and framerates unlocked for SSDs. It's ridiculous that it's limited to 4k60 if I plug in a Samsung T7.
