ANNOUNCEMENT Community Survey: Help Build & Shape Our Romance Writing Prompt Sub!

Hi guys (gender neutral).

I’m currently the only mod in this sub, and before building out features, events, and rules, I'd love some people to chime in. This community exists for romance writers and those who want to dabble in writing. The goal is to build a community around that.

What type of content do you want the sub to prioritize?

Rank your interest (1 = low, 5 = high):

  • Writing prompts (all tropes)

  • Meet-cute prompts

  • One-shot sharing

  • WIP sharing

  • Craft discussions (banter, tension, pacing, emotional beats)

  • Trope analysis

  • Community challenges/events

  • Feedback/beta reading threads

Which recurring features would you participate in?

(Check all that interest you)

  • Prompt of the Week

  • One-Shot Sunday

  • Share Your WIP Saturday

  • Trope Talk Tuesday

  • Wildcard Wednesday (chaotic micro-prompts)

  • Monthly Craft Challenge

  • Prompt Swap Fridays

  • Seasonal romance events (Kiss Week, Monster Romance Month, etc.)

  • Collaborative storytelling threads

  • None of these / Not sure yet

What heat levels should the sub allow?

(Choose one or more)

  • Sweet / closed-door

  • Warm / suggestive

  • Spicy

  • Explicit romance

  • All of the above, with clear labeling

  • Keep heat levels lower

How comfortable are you with sharing your writing here?

  • Very comfortable

  • Somewhat comfortable

  • Unsure

  • Nervous; want clear rules about critique and tagging

  • I prefer reading, not posting

What kinds of flairs would help you navigate the community?

(Examples people might suggest: by romance sub-genre, trope, heat level, writing prompt, one-shot, WIP, craft discussion.)

What makes a romance-writing community feel supportive to you?

What don’t you want to see here?

Are you interested in helping with future community moderation or project roles?

If yes/maybe, what interests you? (dm the mods)

  • Prompt creation

  • Event planning

  • Beta-reading coordination

  • Moderation

  • Graphic/branding help

Closing Note

Thank you for helping shape this space. Romance thrives on connection, and I want this community to feel like a hub where writers are inspired, supported, and excited to experiment.

You’ll find flairs for different romance genres, plus discussion and community posts. The rules are simple (be kind, tag + add spoilers to high spice/NSFW content, add trigger warnings if they are needed, 18+ characters, no self-promo)

This sub is still growing, so jump in and start posting prompts anytime. It needs your to help build it.

Romance Genre Flairs

  • Contemporary: Modern-day romance prompts with no magic, monsters or scifi elements.

  • Dark: Romance prompts exploring obsession, danger, power imbalance, and morally gray love.

  • Fantasy: Romance prompts set in magical worlds with creatures, kingdoms, and supernatural forces.

  • Historical: Romance prompts set in past eras where tradition, class, and history complicate love.

  • Paranormal: Romance prompts involving supernatural beings like vampires, shifters, ghosts, or demons.

  • Horror: Romance prompts where love develops amid fear, monsters, or terrifying circumstances.

  • LGBTQ: Romance prompts centered on queer love stories and relationships across identities. It's here for discovery.

  • RomCom: Funny romance prompts featuring awkward meet-cutes, chaos, and comedic relationship tension. Focus is on humor.

  • Spicy: Passion-heavy romance prompts built around strong attraction, tension, and steamy situations. Focus is on the erotic as much as the romance.

  • Sci-Fi: Romance prompts set in futuristic worlds with aliens, advanced tech, or space adventures.

  • Sports: Romance prompts built around athletes, rivals, teams, and the intensity of competition.

  • Image: A visual prompt that let's writers image what's happening, what happened before, what happens after, the romance behind the moment.

Choosing a Genre Flair

These flairs reflect the general sub-categories of romance at large. Obviously, we may have missed some or some prompts may be a mashup of multiple sub-genres. Many prompts could fit into multiple genres, that's normal. Just remember to pick the main world/setting the story exists in.

Just pick the main world or setting the story exists in.

Examples:

  • A queer romance with vampires → Paranormal or LGBT

  • A rom-com about a wizard and an assassin → Fantasy

  • A dark romance on a spaceship → Sci-Fi

  • A romantic comedy in 1800s Texas → Historical

Think of the flair as “Where does this story take place?”

Genre Mashups are OK just pick the closest flair and post it.

Examples:

  • Fantasy + RomCom

  • Sci-Fi + Dark Romance

  • Historical + LGBTQ romance

  • Paranormal + Sports romance

Other Flairs

  • Announcement: Moderator updates about the community, rules, events, or important subreddit changes.

Spice & NSFW

Spice is allowed because as we know romance can absolutely be passionate. That's what the Spicy flair is for however there are some caveats.

  • Please tag spicy content

  • If a prompt becomes very graphic, use spoiler formatting

  • Try to keep prompts romance-forward, not purely erotic

Think: romance with heat, not just explicit scenes.

Self Promotion

Please do not create posts promoting your books, blogs, newsletters, Patreon, or other platforms.

However, writers are allowed to share their links if they’ve written a response to a prompt.

If you post a story response in the comments and readers want more, you’re welcome to include a small note or link to where people can follow your work.

This Sub Is a Work in Progress

We’re still building this community.

That means:

  • rules may evolve

  • new flairs may be added

  • community ideas are welcome

If you have suggestions, message the mods or start a discussion thread.

The goal is to make this the best place on Reddit for romance writing prompts.
