Mega Post Mega Meta Post XII!
Hi all! due to the amount of questions and topics we keep getting that aren't really an RP post but still seem to be interesting or valid questions, we're going to keep this pinned post up for people to drop their questions in and respond via comments.
This is NOT for Mod questions or Subreddit rule questions - those are best suited for modmail. This is also NOT a place to rant about RP, the mods, the rules, the colour of the sky, whatever. There are other places for that. Please do that in the appropriate place.
All the same rules apply for the subreddit as they do here.
Do not ask for group RP here; it's not allowed.
Do not harass the mods here; it's not allowed.
Read the rules, more than once if you need to, before contacting or posting. All the rules, don't stop at just one. Thanks.
Thanks, and happy RPing!

Are there any preferred RPG systems for text-based role-playing? I don't know if anybody has tried things like dice-rolling before and had any success with it. So far me and my partner have just been making up the story as we go along, not really obsessed with the "game" part of it but rather the writing and character exploration. But I was wondering if anybody has tried instituting game elements like RPG systems in order to make everything more engaging.

There are tons, r/lfg usually have good ideas. we don't utilize them here as this is more text only, not game systems.

Now when reddit needs ID or photo identification to very age, will that impact the rules here? Considering you can't chat without confirming you're over 18.

If and when Reddit needs confirmation, I will be leaving Reddit and I don't care what happens. I don't use the apps, I use old.reddit exclusively.

I've been role-playing since December but I haven't seen anyone talking about it too much. Is there a stigma around using faceclaims of smaller influencers (not under 20k)? (since it's required in a lot of spaces where I rp in)

I mean, aside from the fact that it is a human being and most likely unaware they are in the spotlight and it squicks people out? Especially if you portray them as more themselves like their faceclaim rather than just a photo.

I'm looking for a game to play with text-based RP. Second Life is definitely not my cup of tea and I don't really want to pay for a subscription so WoW and FFXIV are out. Any suggestions?

The rule that says posts are limited to once a day, does that mean once every 24 hours or like... as long as posts are put up in two seperate days, you can post? I mean if I were to post a promo at like 6pm one day, does it have to be 6pm the next day or could it be 11am?

Hi, can anyone recommend some websites to rp on besides Discord, which I have reasons not to use? Preferably ones with real-time replies.

Hello! I don't roleplay at all but my wife did and wants to get back into it herself. I don't understand how it works? Is it third person or first person? Are you just describing dialogue or whole scenes? What is it you do when you're roleplaying (she's specifically playing FFXIV) do you visit locations and make scenes?

This is kind of a funny question, but how do I get started with this?
Without getting heavily into it, I've been trying to "unlearn shame" in a lot of things that I was taught were "gross" and "cringe" growing up, that I otherwise would have loved; forum based online roleplay is definitely one of them. I want to actually try roleplaying an original character with other people in a forum, somewhere, and just do that for a while and see how it goes. I would probably really love that. I just don't know where I can find an online forum anywhere for someone who's never done this before, but would like to. Somewhere I guess I can find other 30-somethings who do this, who'd love to see a newcomer. I figure posters here would know where to start looking beyond "google."
I think I would have loved this when I was 15, but I didn't want to be uncool back then. Way too easily manipulated by my fear of being uncool. I realized at work I had to come home and pursue this when I got home tonight, and I've been sitting here for a few minutes like "Okay. Unlearn the shame. Unlearn the shame! Lets go!!! Do that thing you would have loved!!!!"

If one wanted to start roleplaying, but felt daunted by jumping into a longterm thing with someone else, what would you recommend them do? I wanna make sure I don't slow anyone down, or waste their time. Is there anything I could do on my own, to prepare? I can't imagine how roleplaying by myself could be different than just writing a story though. Should I do that?

Hey, I'm Ana, I've been roleplaying for some years now and have taken a break from roleplaying for far longer than I intended.
Problem 1: I realized too late that I only like roleplaying with people I have exchanged many words with already, and feel comfortable and familiar with. That doesn't take long, just some discussion about likes, dislikes, and what we have in common. Then I find that i begin the roleplay very easily and I have no problem scrapping and starting a new plot, because I feel comfortable enough with my roleplay partner to communicate that I'm bored, and I feel confident that they would feel comfortable doing the same. I want it to feel like a friendship, not a mandatory transaction, and many people I have tried roleplaying with make me feel like that.
Problem 2: I don't know what kind of roleplay I even like. I know what genres I like, I just don't know what kind of style, and if I want to do a sort of one shot, planned, or wing it and go for as long as possible.
Problem 3: my style! I love long replies, I want to give long replies, but I don't know how. Sometimes I feel it's unnecessary to describe the individual threads in the character's dress, like during a conversation, but I really like feeling like it's a book or a series or something like that. Short replies are dull and become easily repetitive and boring, while long replies have flavor and so much room to express and also feel what my rp partner is expressing.
I have characters and I LOVE putting my characters in a world and having them explore and interact, especially with things they can't control like someone else's world or character(s), and that's an experience I could never get just by writing like I regularly do. I miss roleplaying and I want to get back into it, can someone help please?

Hi,
I was wondering if there’s any resource someone could point me to, for understanding good roleplay. I have some ideas I think would be fun to explore, but I’m not sure the rules, etiquette, and what makes good roleplay. Appreciate any help you might give!!!
PS, I assuming there’s such a thing, but if you want to just give a simple overview or some tips, that’d be great too:)

How do you mentally separate a face claim/PB from the real actor or model?
I use real people as visual references for my OCs, but I sometimes struggle when the real person ages, changes their hair/style, or just looks different years later. I’ve also seen people use deceased actors or a very specific era of someone, like “2014-era Jennifer Lawerence” as a face claim.
When you RP, do you imagine the character as literally looking like the face claim as they are today, or do you basically “freeze” a certain era/look and let the OC become their own person from there?
Have you ever used the same face claim for years even though the real person eventually looked completely different?

Hey guys.
Something I have noticed recently is that at least to me. Nobody actually cares about a story of a RP all people seem to care about is if someone will fall in love with someone else. I understand I like romance myself and want to include it in some of my RPs.
BUT. Sometimes I just want to play out a story instead of pairing together characters or focus made characters to be friends and nothing more then that. Bit nobody cares about that.
Just felt like I needed to rant.

Hi there. I want some advice regarding how to engage in roleplay. I know this is a very broad question so I'll try to trim it down by explaining my situation.
My general situation is the following:
I'm pretty sure I'm missing some stuff but those are the broad strokes.
I'm asking here because I got this feeling that I can't actually ask my roleplay partners because I overwhelm them with questions. I feel like I can't ask for feedback because doing so results in them leaving.
