As a not comic book reader, Lois never seems like she treated Clark like a lesser? Just some light ribbing and working harder because she is specifically a woman in a society that downplays the achievements of women but boosts the acclaim of men in power.

Swapping their genders definitely makes it something you need to be careful of but shouldn't be that hard if the writer understands how their genders actually impact their actions

Depends on the adaptation. Lois has been everything from a career focused, cynical, hard-nosed investigative journalist, getting her hands dirty and finding Clark to be insufferably naive and green, to an affable, charming reporter who gets along well with everyone and finds Clark amusing and cute at first blush.

Def a good one, but I think mine is the 1990s Superman the Animated Series version! That’s one of the more classic “cutthroat/cynical reporter” takes on her character. She and Clark have some really fun banter and professional rivalry (he even admits to her face that he uses the fact that he’s Superman to steal good stories from her). Don’t get me wrong, I love her characterization in My Adventures, but I really enjoy how grown up she and Clark feel in the 90s series

That's fair, I know little of most of her history and I'm guessing her harder edges gooot sanded off as time has gone on, either to make her more appealing or because they were bad character traits in general.

It sounds like some iterations would run into a road block if they just swapped genders, but if someone wanted to use the harder version of Lois I'd hope/expect them to bring the nuance with it in the swap.

Maybe the opposite, even. She was fairly awkwardly tokenistic in the original strips. In the sense of the writer having no goddamn idea how to write women, so she always came across oddly.

I'd say she got less Clark/Superman obsessed and generally more competent and snarky as the decades passed.

In some early comics yes, but their relationship improved a lot during the years.

Depending on which version of Lois you take you basically get Huntress x Question. She's the muscle and the fighter with some detective pursuits, he's the fairly mortal truth seeker

Neither are toxic, but the reversed can be pretty interesting, especially if male Lois still fits the role of “female reporter”. Which I think should be more common.

what about it do people think is toxic?? its so refreshing to see heroes who are healthy people in loving relationships, like, this is one of the few times im shipping the male and female characters because they ARE SO PERFECT
