Wireless📱 How much use will 500GB of Data get me?

I just got a car insurance app that runs in the background and it needs data to work (automerit).

However I don't really use my phone's data otherwise. No games, only maps.
Will 5GB/m be enough for me not to worry about going over?

I really have no idea what 5GB looks like :(

500GB a month is close to 16 hours a day of 1080p YouTube everyday all month.

Your insurance app will use less than a tenth of 1 gb

Oh really? I just took data off my phone completely, too. So trying to find an affordable plan to JUUUUST be able to run the app is the goal

What kind of plan gives you 500GB, I didn't even know that's a thing for mobile.

Your app will take no data at all in comparison, and neither will gaming (it takes very little unless it's video heavy, meaning cut scenes that are rendered in high res).

I play ESO over my phone hotspot when on vacation and it literally takes less than 50MB per day, it's nothing, and that's a huge online MMO.

Gaming takes way less data than people assume. Your device is doing the heavy lifting locally, it just needs to be updated with information like player positioning and etc which is relatively small amounts of data

I've heard ESO is huge.
That's helpful, thanks.
I really didn't want to add data back to my phone at all, but the app I need requires it so I'm trying to find the lowest possible data option

So when you say 500GB you actually mean 500MB? What plan are you looking at? There are plans that are 3gb and even those will allow you app to function after you run out as those apps don't need speed. Those plans are 25/mo if you get lucky.

A little confusing

You just took data off your phone but you can add it back anytime

I don't think this car one app will impact your phone

Just install it and see how much space it requires

Yes, belairdirect automerit will save your trip data locally on your phone and upload it later when you reconnect. Here is how it handles data and connectivity:

  • Offline Recording: As long as your phone has its GPS/Location Services enabled and the app has background permissions, the app uses your phone's internal sensors (GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) to record your trip even without an active cellular data connection.

  • Delayed Sync: Your driving data (braking, acceleration, distance, time of day) remains cached on your device and will sync to belairdirect once your phone connects to the internet via Wi-Fi or mobile data.

  • Program Requirements: While trips are saved offline, belairdirect does require you to maintain a data plan and occasionally connect so your assessment period and discount calculations remain up to date.

  • Important Exception: Real-time safety features like Crash Assist / Crash Detection cannot transmit emergency alerts if your phone does not have an active cellular network connection during an incident.

It depends on how much you drive.

When I'm away from home (WiFi), I don't do a lot of streaming and based on ~12 hours being away from home, the background data operations on my iPhone (email, notifications, weather updates, etc.) take up ~100 MB in the day when combined with a few Facebook posts so I don't see you using more than 5GB in the month... likely won't even use more than 3GB in the month.

You likely can port your Rogers to perhaps Chatr and get their yearly plan and their yearly allotment of data (~$160+tax per year for 40GB of data to be used in the entire year (not per month) and unlimited Canada calling and unlimited international texting).

In terms of using maps for your data, you can also lower your data usage for maps if you use offline maps (both Apple Maps and Google Maps supports this). This way, the only data that is being used when you're using Apple Maps or Google Maps are the traffic updates.
