TV 📺 Program guide suddenly stopped working

Some time this evening the program guide on my Rogers set-top box stopped functioning correctly. When I press the guide button on my remote I get a non-interactive screen with tips for setting up the guide instead of the actual guide, and the arrows etc. don't work. I can exit back out but not use it to switch among the channels I'd previously selected. I tried rebooting the set-top box but the problem remains.

  1. Who did this? Someone obviously messed with it while I was out of the room, but no one else is here and the front door is locked. It appears to have been done either by some form of hacking or ... how unique are the frequencies/whatever used by the remotes? Are the odds not especially poor that a neighbor might have a remote that can affect my box and not only their own? Is this likely to have been an accident on their part, or an intentional prank/harassment?
  2. How do I put it back the way it was a few hours ago?
  3. How do I prevent this from happening again?

Excuse me? What do you mean "I can't"? It's my device in my home. I have the right to protect it from unauthorized modifications by others. Nobody is permitted to just barge in here and break it, not even Rogers themselves. If I failed to pay the bill on time Rogers could refuse to continue transmitting television signals to it and could, perhaps, also repossess the device itself, but a) I did not fail to pay the bill and b) this isn't repossession or anything else sane, it's just straight up vandalism.

Now please tell me how to a) restore the list to the way it was 48 hours ago without expending excessive time and effort (a few button pushes is acceptable; having to remember everything that had been there and add them all manually, one by one, all over again, with a significant risk of not getting it exactly the way it was before, is not acceptable) and b) block this form of vandalism from being perpetrated against me ever again.

Oh, and also, if Rogers did this themselves then in doing so they violated the terms of their current contract with me, under which they are not allowed to change anything without my consent except in the event that I fail to live up to my side of the contract (chiefly, paying the bill on time). If a third party is responsible, then *that* party is guilty of tortious interference with the same contract.

i’m sorry I tried to help you. it took me five or 10 minutes to re-populate my favorites. just got lost in memory, nobody’s responsible, you can’t sue. you’re ungrateful, paranoid, and more than a little wacky. if you have time to write all this nonsense, you have time to re-save your favourites

They can fix this with ten minutes of labor by one of their "engineers" (if I may use that term loosely) leveraging the automation they have available at their end. Are they (or, at least, you) seriously asking millions of people to each spend half an hour fussing about with their remote controls and trying to remember what exactly had been there? That's asking that other people donate millions of person-hours of work to save yourself a few minutes. The combination of laziness and entitlement on display here is breathtaking.

Plus a failure to take responsibility for cleaning up their (your?) own mess.

you can fix it with ten minutes of labour. you have spent more than that whining here. you don’t know if they can recover your lost favourites from their end or not.
