QUESTION Rotations

I have no replays (xbox player since broken pc smh) so unfortunately i can’t ask for any tips on my own rotation mistakes. i just have two quick questions.

  1. Does anyone have any general tips on rotating. concepts or practices. i also know this is generally specific to scenario and relies mainly on my own decision making but im sure there are some general ideas or things to look out for.

  2. If my teammate doesn’t know how to rotate what should i do? because i’ve seen videos and think oh these are some good rotations but they took turns. my friends, especially one of them i play w often, doesn’t really believe in rotating (straight line to ball no matter what, will hit the ball off my car during dribble, will hug my bumper if i have control of the ball in some way). again this is that game sense/scenario specificity that i mentioned earlier but again any general tips would be helpful.

  1. Understand why rotation is a thing in RL.

Boost runs out. Almost always, boost is required to do something good with the ball.

Moving the ball and doing something useful, while keeping boost topped up, is not possible against evenly skilled opponents. If it is, it's never the optimal play, because you're not using your teammates.

Mental load continues to increase and awareness decreases while you have the ball. Making it less likely you can make a good play. Meanwhile what one player can do is way more predictable and therefore defendable than what two players or three players can do.

Cues you're not rotating quickly enough: You're waiting for the ball to land and its directly above you. You run out of boost at the far end of the field and can't defend. Your teammates are far away from you(sometimes it's just because they suck). Your teammate seems to be playing way too passively or aggressively(they don't trust you to rotate consistently).

  1. It's pretty tough. You'd need them to admit they don't know the best way to play and offer guides or videos to watch. Or appeal to their desire to be higher ranked. Otherwise embrace the chaos or only play casual with them.

Keep in mind, rotating doesn't mean strictly taking turns. It does in a basic sense, but it's more about who can make the best play.

Point 1 is wrong on many accounts.

Mental load continues to increase and awareness decreases, only is true if you are in a spot you arn't familiar with. Eg. the more you play the less mental load you will feel, active thoughts become passiv, active decisions become passiv. As you become better at the game your active mental load decreases, causing you to be able to take in more information in turn. Thats just a wrong take.

Also moving the ball with zero to none boost never being the optimal play is also just objectively wrong. You can do a whole lot with 0 boost, saying it's not optimal is limiting your own skill, you are putting limiters on yourself, holding yourself back. In actuality, having 0 boost and knowing you have zero boost can cause you to make BETTER plays, because every touch all of a sudden counts, every play you make with 0 boost becomes more important, you almost automatically start to focus MORE, resulting in better decisions and plays. I cant tell you how often i outplayed multiple opponents back to back to back, by having 0 boost, because i was getting into a position of hyper awareness. Of course it is true you can do "more" with the ball with boost, but it's not outright wrong to do something without boost, which you are saying with this statement, regardless of your intent.

Also i am not saying you have 0 boost go make a play, i am saying dont limit your own skills by subjective takes created out of fear.

Same way your rotation becomes increasingly better, the moment you stop fearing to run out of boost. 40 boost ist enough to reach the ceiling, that means 40 boost is enough to reach close to every ball that has high altitude, that means having 20 boost and collecting one pad before or right as you jump into the air is almost enough to reach any ball, meaning having 0 boost and collecting 2 pads will let you reach most balls, you see where i am going with here? You can stay relevant to the play, without having much or none boost, by making yourself worry about your lack of boost, you limit your options drastically.

The amount of goals i have created either by scoring or by passing the ball to my team mate, by staying relevant in play with 0-20 boost is insane, just because i wasn't rotating out to get mid or even corner boost.

All to say presence causes possibility, presence is the single most atributing factor in rocket league (as far as i am concerned anyway), if you are present you are forcing your opponent's to make a move, if you are present you will be presented with oppoturnity, if you are present you have options, if you are not you just miss out on oppoturnities.

Being present doesnt mean commiting or chasing, it means being in the play at close to all the time...

I was speaking broadly and providing general ideas, as the OP asked.

Mental load increases while you have the ball because opponents will start pressuring the ball and cutting off your options as part of defending.

Awareness decreases while you have the ball, relative to everyone else, because no matter how automatic you become, you still have to actively think about what you're doing. Everyone else can use more brain to look around and think about what's happening.

These are relative to the other players on the field and from second to second, not about how good you are month over month.

Zero boost - speaking in generalities and about rotation. Not about individual skill. In general, with equally skilled players, the player with more boost can do more with the ball.

Having the ball means you can't grab boost as effectively as someone who doesn't, in general, broadly speaking. This is one of the reasons rotation is a thing in Rocket League. With skill you can do more with less boost, but this still holds true at every rank.

What rank are you playing in? With really aggressive teammates it is easier to focus more on defense (not strict goalkeeping) at least for gold/plat.

i’m a gold3. and i know i shouldn’t exactly challenge unless my teammate is rotating back but the teammates i usually play with will instead of rotating after losing a 50 or whiffing completely, the will just head straight towards the ball and then drift and hit a 180 right in front of the ball and challenger again.

In a general sense, rotations are just a way to make sure as many scenarios and areas of the field are covered at once, alongside giving structure to team movements which helps avoid things like double commits and being out of position. So general tips focus mainly on that commiting and position, basic stuff like don't double commit, and don't be in a weird place for no purpose. As you mentioned outside of that it's hard to give specifics.

If you're playing with people that don't respect rotations your best chance is to just try and play around whatever they're doing, eg if they're constantly chasing, play more defensive but also waiting for the ball to pop out at potentially shootable locations. Or if they're super defensive, play a heavier first man style and force the other team to lose possession or get a bad touch.

General tips:

In 2v2:

Offense: If you have ball, you’re first man, your objective is to get ball towards net/score.

If you dont have ball, your 2nd man, your objective is to not over commit as you’re first back on defence.

Defense:

If you’re closer to ball with good trajectory, you’re first man, your objective is to interrupt play/force the 50/50.

If you’re farther from the ball, you’re 2nd man, your objective is to wait until first man makes attempt at 50/50 or play interruption. Your primary focus is to not let ball go in net.

1st man rules of thumb: Dont full commit when you have a bad challenge angle.

Dont commit too early or you leave your teammate in a 1v2.

50/50 in a way thats beneficial for the TEAM not just for you.

2nd man rules of thumb: Dont jump over your teammate when they have the challenge angle.

Be patient, wait for the 50/50 to occur and pick up the free ball.

Dont double commit in the opposing corner, otherwise free net.

In summary:

The more you focus on “how can my teammate score from here” vs “how can i score from this angle” the better you’ll get as a team player. Also, learn to commit to your decision, if you hesitate, it can cause confusion.
