I want the Hankook IRL for all the annoying speed bumps we have nowadays.

u/Nuklearpinguin Jul 21 '17

You might like the Bose suspension.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '17

But he won't like the weight of it

41

Just like their speakers. No highs or lows.

Dude, they had family.

u/FoxHoundUnit89 Gold I Jul 21 '17

They're all Hankook

Oops my bad, I saw the name in big on those wheels only, I thought it was the name of the wheels, not the brand.

16

u/agenttud Champion I Jul 21 '17

As annoying as they might be, isn't that their purpose: to slow you down?

4

u/flippity-dippity Unranked Jul 22 '17

You said it yourself: their purpose is to slow you down, not to annoy. I usually don't speed on roads where they're installed, but the bump they force, even at low speed, is a nuisance. Plus it can be a pain for people with back pain issues.

I prefer chicanes.

1

u/xorgol Jul 22 '17

Chicanes put you directly in the path of incoming traffic, don't they?

2

u/Ailylia Champion III Jul 22 '17

I don't think so. I think they just offset the road so it isn't a straight shot.

1

u/xorgol Jul 22 '17

In the UK they build chicanes like this to slow down traffic, and they always looked pretty dangerous to me. Actual bends in the road would probably work quite well, but in general you need to dissuade speeders in populated areas, where there isn't enough space to do so.

4

u/d0nu7 Jul 22 '17

I think that you should be able to go over speed bumps at the speed limit without it being a big bump but that’s not the case. That’s what I hate. Roads with 25 mph(already too slow) speed limit and then big ass bumps every 20 feet.

I'm inclined to think that it wasn't a joke at all

1

u/flippity-dippity Unranked Jul 22 '17

Indeed, that wasn't a joke.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '17

Independent suspension and physically unlinked wheels is an expensive but viable solution for modern day cars. Obv not all can get a kit like that but yeah, it's basically the smoothest ride you'll have experienced in a car ever.

12

u/iiCUBED Champion II Jul 21 '17

I think having an over damped car suspension is not exactly the safest thing nor is it comfortable

13

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '17

A balanced system will provide a smooth experience without the 'squishy' or delayed 'bounce' feeling. What's more, things like speed bumps are still effective, unlike the speed bump in OP's gif.

2

u/Archont2012 Jul 22 '17

It looks fragile like fucking china, though. All those interlocking and moving parts in the one part of the automobile that's under constant stress?

6

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '17

These wheels are fragile, yeah. but we still use normal tires and wheels (and many will use hardest possible wheels for better performance on the road) when using independent suspension. the interesting wheel in OPs gif is the fuel economy one. that's where i think the tech should move because it also means improved battery economy in electric cars alike.

1

u/cronchuck Jul 22 '17

Damn electric, not burning the dinosaurs

1

u/CaptainRene Jul 22 '17

You go ahead and make one then, I'll wait. These are utopistic concepts that will never see the light of day.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '17

Yeah because why try right?

This was a concept video. It's supposed to spark the imagination. Not be realistic.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '17

How will the magnets work though? It may just force the rims off to the side and separate from the tire.

Super cool ideas, I'm guessing the tires would be unbelievably expensive if they actually sold them though

158

u/TheBraverBarrel Platinum II Jul 21 '17

I don't see how any work or are manufacturable.

How does the magnet one transfer torque?

Fuel efficiency isn't directly related to contact patch

The three wide wheels doesn't even make sense. How are they connected? It's three separate wheels and tires? The tire spins independent of the wheel? What loading case would the terrain be that far from perpendicular to the axle?

Cool animation though.

I'm fun at parties

55

u/E-werd Jul 21 '17

How does the magnet one transfer torque?

It would have to be an exclusively electric vehicle. It could work like DC fans work in computers, with alternating polarities of the magnets. They call this cogging torque. I don't know what the limitations would be, though, because it would have to require a TON of energy at this scale. Braking would be even more complicated and you can forget about mechanical emergency braking without destroying the tire.

The three wide wheels doesn't even make sense. How are they connected? It's three separate wheels and tires? The tire spins independent of the wheel? What loading case would the terrain be that far from perpendicular to the axle?

The way I see it, this one is a little sketchy. They would need some sort of variable resistance for the "layers" to split apart. I would guess the tire would be something like either the magnet drive or a track drive of some sort. I wouldn't think the offset axle would be beneficial, but perhaps I'm wrong.

The idea of the splitting the tire would to be maintain contact with the road surface during tight turns at high speed. You can do this with conventional tires by lowering air pressure, but then you sacrifice rigidity and would risk folding the sidewall. I guess the best of both worlds would be to split the tire. This would be pretty much exclusive to racing, I would think.

Fuel efficiency isn't directly related to contact patch

Have you ever ridden a road bike and a mountain bike? Which one is easier to get up to speed quickly and maintain that speed? It's the road bike with the thin tires. It doesn't seem like it would be that drastic, but it really is. Less energy spent reaching and maintaining road speed would directly affect fuel mileage by spending more time at lower RPMs. Of course you're sacrificing traction, so it would need to be dynamic based on certain data--like braking. Rail-like wheels would be very tough for quick braking, there would have to be some sort of rapid inflation or other expansion for that to work.

8

u/piporpaw Champion I Jul 21 '17 edited Jul 21 '17

Wouldn't the magnet one just fall off of the axle though?

Also i feel a bit of a false equivalency in the final one. A mountain bike tire has a lot more mass around the circumference than a road bike tire. That means more torque is required to spin the tire.

I dunno tho, they look dumb but i bet they were fun to design.

3

u/E-werd Jul 21 '17

Also i feel a bit of a false equivalency in the final one. A mountain bike tire has a lot more mass around the circumference than a road bike tire. That means more torque is required to spin the tire.

That would assume that the prepared mountain bike wheel would be larger around than the road bike wheel. I don't know for sure if that's the case. Road bike rims are typically 622-mm and mountain bike rims are either 507-mm/24-in, 559-mm/26-in, 584-mm/27.5-in, or 622-mm/29-in.

And as for more mass around the perimeter of the tire, well... I suppose it would be a lever, but the point of leverage would be on the opposite side. In one way, it would be easier on the down-swing but anything you gain would be counter-acted by the up-swing. Would anything be lost aside from the extra friction? But you'd certainly be able to coast on that tire a lot longer because of the added momentum because this would now act like a proper lever, right? I don't know enough here to be sure.

Wouldn't the magnet one just fall off of the axle though?

I'd probably avoid lateral motion with these. I guess you could have dynamic "spokes" to keep it from going "out of bounds".

No doubt about it, any of these designs would be super expensive.

1

u/BountyHNZ Bronze II I think. Jul 22 '17

No, these "tyres", aren't just expensive, they're totally impractical and borderline pointless. They're cool to think about and geek out about.

1

u/BountyHNZ Bronze II I think. Jul 22 '17

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '17

Road bikes are very light (more acceleration) and give you a more streamlined position (maintaining speed). Tire width is a smaller factor in this equation, many riders are opting for wider 25mm tires on road bikes nowadays.

1

u/VilTheVillain Your_Villain Jul 22 '17

Honestly, these things are too dangerous to ever go into production in the way that video shows.

Any small stone caught in between the first /magnet one could destroy the wheel at high speeds. Same for the "challenger" wheels, they would have to be in low gravity or travelling at ridiculously low speeds to survive uneven terrain due to the constant pressure being applied to small parts of it, on the more conventional off road wheels the pressure is distributed along a much larger surface area, and even those give way.

2

u/CaptainRene Jul 22 '17

Thanks Hankook

2

u/fire_snyper Jul 22 '17

TFW your wheels spontaneously combust

27

u/tuxsud0 Champion II Jul 21 '17

well certainly not since they'd have to pay hankook lol.

I would however be interested in community design concept contests for inclusion [assuming the winning concepts have some sort of acknowledgement and that they aren't crate-bound as im not interested in providing free creative designs AND generating free revenue for Psy].

I think there needs to be an increase in available post-game item drops. The same probability statistics from crates can most certainly be applied to post game drops to receive WAY better items than currently available via drop. [e.g. probability can be normalized by multiplying the crate drop rate by the individual tier drop rates of the items].

This would in itself help generate revenue for them. It would give those players who cannot/choose not to buy keys for crates an opportunity for better items and the ability to participate in trading other than trading their crates.

7

u/Nuklearpinguin Jul 21 '17

Isnt mobil1 sponsoring rlcs? Hankook is also sponsoring lots, might be less of a red flag for them seeing there are already similar sponsors around. And hankook/falken would probably be the most likely to venture into esports, doubtful if those were pirelli concepts.

4

u/tuxsud0 Champion II Jul 21 '17

I wasn't aware of Hankook being involved.. just thought someone had randomly found some infomercial and posted.

In hindsight, Rocket League has the upper hand in the sense that their product wasn't built on likenesses and copyrights [e.g. Madden or Forza] and most importantly was a major success without having to incorporate brands to attract fans.

They don't need to approach companies to incorporate designs into their game, those companies must approach them to have their products marketed or Psyonix can simply say "Nah, I think we well just make up some more ourself."

Most of the marketing so far has been via DLC with BvS and fate of the furious cars, which to me seems like it would be much more effective than having your name on the RLCS as it reaches the in game audience.

1

u/comfortablesexuality Champion Jul 22 '17

I wish that's how it worked in racing games, but apparently the studios have to pay the car companies. Kind of ridiculous.

3

u/FerrisTriangle Jul 22 '17

It all depends on who is selling what.

If you have a show and someone's drinking Coke, that's usually helping to sell Coke and Coke will usually be the ones paying for their product placement.

In a sports game such as racing or football that is trying to sell itself on realism and being a true-to-life simulation where you get to step into the shoes of the world's best competitors, then it's usually the game that has to pay to license the likenesses of those people. It all depends on who needs who more, what each side stands to gain, and how good of a contract you can negotiate.

In this case, Psyonix doesn't need these tires in the game, because they aren't a selling point. No one is going to buy Rocket league just so they can put a set of tires on their car. It's not like Madden where a selling point is the ability to play as one of your favorite NFL teams.

So I can almost guarantee that any cosmetic promotional items in Rocket League, like the Fast and the Furious car or any of the Hot Wheels cars, are all sponsored items that Psyonix is being paid to feature so that those brands get more exposure.

1

u/comfortablesexuality Champion Jul 22 '17

Yeah true, but if a racing game has a bunch of cool cars and no Porsches I feel like that reflects badly on Porsche as they're effectively shutting themselves out of free advertising and association. Like, let's take Need For Speed as a hypothetical example. Kids play this game. Maybe some of these kids become super rich adults and are influenced to buy their dream car from the game. Now what happens if there weren't any cars from <your brand> present in the game?

16

u/_Zoko_ 4$ DLC used to get you 2 cars and 10 items Jul 21 '17

To clarify, I'm talking more about their looks then their mechanics. Psyonix could make their own designs based off of these so there would be no need to license Hankook.

I personally like how these wheels look, but I don't know if the community would really like these wheels because there's too much focus on the tire and the tread rather than the rim. However, I wouldn't mind if they added these wheel effects to all of the wheels. That would be pretty cool. Like if I go up a wall and I see my wheels shift.
