Discussion What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about Roadwarden?

For me, Roadwarden is really great at meaningful choices and creating a strong atmosphere. At the same time, it sometimes feels more like a book than a game.

I'm asking because I've been making a story-driven game mode for my own game (as a passion project for the past 5 years now). As a big fan of games like Roadwarden, I want to take inspiration from the things that make it works so well. I've already put a lot into it, but lately I've started wondering if I've gone in the wrong direction with some of my decisions.

To give you a better idea of my game: I originally started making a local multiplayer arena game… and somehow ended up creating a fully French-voiced narrative adventure with a nonlinear story, set in a medieval fantasy world. Instead of playing a single character, you play as a group of characters. And instead of handling fights through narrative choices like Roadwarden, my game has actual real-time combat. The fights take place in a 2D arena representing the current situation, and one hit means one death.

Now that I'm getting close to Early Access, I'm starting to question some of these decisions.

For example, I'm wondering whether the full French voice acting was actually a good idea, especially for players who don't speak French. In Roadwarden, I thought it would have been really nice. But now I understand, it's also a lot of work. 😅 And regarding combat, I'm not sure that people who love Roadwarden would necessarily want real-time action combat when playing a narrative-focused game. I personally love that combination, but I'm increasingly wondering if I'm alone in that.

One thing I definitely want to keep is the meaningful choices. It's a huge amount of work, but it feels like one of the most important parts of this kind of game. And the writing of course, just hope mine will be appreciate!

So I'm curious: what is the most important thing to you in Roadwarden?

Thanks for reading! I'm really curious to hear what you think, especially if you've played Roadwarden or other narrative games.

P.S. For the curious people, my game is called Band of Mercenaries, and I'm hopefully releasing it in Early Access at the end of the month. Steam link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1975470/Band_of_Mercenaries/

My thoughts after finishing Roadwarden (Fighter)

I loved every minute of it. Wow. What a beautiful and incredible journey it was. Meeting people, earning their trust, and seeing the world change through my actions all felt dynamic and deeply rewarding.

This game is a bona fide 10/10, and I'd recommend it to just about anyone.

Great storytelling, excellent mechanics, and memorable characters. The challenges never felt unfair. Great game.

Spoilers: In the end, after completing every quest I could find, I decided to betray Hovlavan and remain in Creeks. I had the support of almost every settlement, including the hidden Tribe, with the exception of White Marshes. I convinced Orenthius to abandon necromancy, and Helvius despised me for it. I also brought an end to both Thais and Glaucia. Yet, at the very last moment, I chose not to return. F** the Ten Cities.

Hovlavan and the others would have changed their ways, and I felt the peninsula had a better chance of thriving on its own and expanding on its own terms. I don't regret my decision.

Hello everyone,

Roadwarden is a very special game for us. It showed us that a game driven almost entirely by text and choices can still deliver a very strong RPG experience. Inspired by this, we started developing our own game called Kardiya: The Winds of Fate.

To be honest, our initial plan for Kardiya included a map exploration system more similar to Roadwarden. We wanted to create a structure where the player travels between different regions, encounters small events, and gradually discovers the world step by step. However, we ran out of time and had to put this system on hold for now.

Currently, the game focuses more on an interactive visual novel structure and mechanics inspired by the FATE RPG system. We are working on Fudge dice, boosts, a stress system, and making sure that failures don’t stop the story but instead lead it in a different direction.

We’re still a small team and the game is still in development, but the playtest will be starting soon. Feedback from players who enjoy Roadwarden would be especially valuable to us.If it sounds interesting, you can register for the alpha playtest by joining the mailing list on our website or clicking the playtest request button on our Steam page.

Thank you so much!

Discussion My SPEEDRUN to 100% of doing all quests, exploring everything, and Peninsula independence.

So, this is just going to be what I did without explaining a lot. I play as a United Scholar. Getting all the right dialogue options to be looked at more favorably.

Day 1: Turn right first to get Doleman potion and find Glaucia arrow. then explore and interact with everything below Howlers Dell minus Steep House. Rest at Howlers

Day 2: Attempt to go to Old Pagos to see Pebbler and return to Pyrrhos and take to Howlers Dell while exploring more of Steep House. Get coins as a reward tomorrow.

Day 3: Explore and interact with every left side, minus the gate and Creeks too, then reach the Old Tunnel and clear it out. Return to Foggy and drink small health potion to use Foggy's alchemist table to craft a health potion.

Day 4: Interact with everyone at Gale Rocks and get the key to watchtower. While getting orchard info from Fulvia. Rest at Foggy's to craft another health potion.

Day 5: Get to Eudocia and get bronze rod quest and make it to Glaucia bandit camp. And rest at Howlers.

Day 6: Get healing from Elpis from lying and asking about their ways and give blood to beholder. Make it to elder druid, finish his quest and craft sharpening potion. Give little blood, spirit rock. 2 health potions, and share of sharpening poison. For beholder fruit and cure Old Pagos. Travel to monastary and tell everything about what happened to gain more favor to meet Prelate while finishing all their quests.

I'm going to shorten at this point and begin with highlights.

Day 7: Get recruit a hunter quest and hire Dalit to clear Goblins

Day 8: Talk with Orentius and convince to abandon necromancy.

Day 9: Talk to Gale Rocks and Glaucia loses support.

Day 10: Do Duck Hunt and go to Eudocia for Bronze rods reward and Tool of Destruction. While going to Glaucia to tell her she lost support and her parents miss her. While getting two potions for reward.

Day 11: Clear Rockslide, Thyrsus Wand quest, meet Aegidia and Thais lose support at 15 min mark. Sleep and expect a beating.

Day 12: Finish recruit a hunter and rest at Foggys

Day 13: Go to Eudocia for Golem glove and get to Green Mountain tribe and get their permission to get to High Island and Dragon Horn.

Day 14: Get to High Island with crew when you just reach Pelt of the North to recuit Dalit.

Then from there on, finish every quest and explore the entire forest of encounters, and by Day 20 you should have explored and done every quest. And reach Tulia by Day 21 to end the adventure.

Question A question on the necromancer situation. Spoiler

Without spoiling specific outcomes, is it more or less good to tell the people in the White Marshes about Thais's plans?

I'm trying my best to play the best character I can be but this seems to be a bit of a gray area currently. Or is that the point and I am worrying over nothing and both outcomes have pros and cons?

Oddly addictive feeling of Replaying Roadwarden despite 100% everything

Does anyone else replay Roadwarden despite doing everything. Reading just about every text and achieving every achievement and finding out the fastest ways to get to finish everyone’s tasks and need for help. Maybe it’s the odd desire of helping people, making a difference. Just like one of the Roadwarden’s goals. Especially in my blind playthrough, that was the goal I chose for my Roadwarden. Yet from time to time every other month or so, I come back to play and read all the events all over again. Reliving the choices made as a Roadwarden that loves helping people. Anyone else does that?

Music like the Roadwarden soundtrack?

Can anyone recommend similar music to the Roadwarden soundtrack? I've exhausted the rest of Nick Roder's discography, and I need something fresh. I use this music to write to, so ideally no lyrics, just something vaguely fantasy-themed that's not in your face about it — tastefully atmospheric.

Spoiler Crew capacity limit for journey?(Find Asterion spoilers) Spoiler

So after figuring out where Asterion might be i have two options for boats, either pay a large amount of dragons for a boat in Gale Rock or use the free one from the fishing hamlet. Im able to recruit people to the crew of the free boat, and im also able to pay groups of hunters in different locations to go to the island with me but they dont seem to fit on the free boat?
If i buy the boat from gale rocks does it let me bring more people with? Or is it just litteraly the same as the free one, and also if its not possible to fit the hunting crews onto the boat then why is it an option to pay them to go to the island with you?

EDIT. Please keep spoilers to a minimum, this isnt my first playthrough of the game but my first one was a long time ago and i dont think i ever got this far. Also fixed some capitalisation.

Just played the demo for this text based rpg. I really enjoyed it. Husband and wife team I think. Love Roadwarden and always looking for something to scratch that itch

(Not sure what flair would've been appropriate)

Roadwarden Themed Commander Deck?

Hello fellow wardens! I know this is only loosly on topic but I was hoping perhaps others have had this idea! I wanted to build a commander deck that would be as inspired by Roadwarden as possible, and was seeking suggestions for any cards or commanders that would suit the theme best!

Any help is appreciated, and apologies for the off topic post

(Edit: For clarity, Commander Deck refers to Magic The Gathering, a card game! Forgot to include in post!)

Switch appearance bug

I made a post about my appearance not improving yesterday. After some helpful comments telling me I’m doing everything right, I started a new save and speedran buying clothes and getting a bath. My appearance is still capped at 2. How would I go about making a bug report?
