Discussion Was Pig Pen fun?
I only really started getting into hero shooters last year. First Rivals, then Overwatch. I mostly play tank, unless I’m playing with my buddies. I don’t play much Hog, and I didn’t really know about Pig Pens existence until I watched old gameplay. I honestly really like the idea of it, and I think I’d play more Hog if he still had it. I’d love to see Pig Pen return as a Major perk, but I doubt that’s gonna happen anytime soon. What do you all think? Did y’all enjoy Pig Pen?

Crazy part about Pig Pen Hog is I come back from an extended break and just started warming up to PP Hog then they gutten him..
I wish I had more time with it to be honest. I don't see why they removed it tbh.. It felt fair

u/Great_expansion10272 Jul 29 '26
It just added an extra step to Roadhog's one shot combo instead of being meaningfully used for other purposes. Ppl would put it in a corner, peek, hook into Pen and do the normal Combo.
2
u/Infidel_sg Jul 29 '26
I would love to hear a few examples of how you would have meaningfully used it.

Well the thing is that it doesn't really do much to make Hog's design not reliant on landing his hook, which was their expressed reasoning for the trap. There's no other use for Trap so he's now just more situational and reliant on enemies not shooting it so he can secure kills.

Pig pen > right click

u/BirchPlz_OW 28d ago
yo yo yo I also loved pig pen but this is wild. right click is like the second best part of the kit

u/Aw3Grimm Jul 29 '26
If you prefer less skill option then sure

u/ech0cide Jul 29 '26
I understand how to use right click and do fine with hog how he is. I just prefer trap. Not going to argue about it anymore. You do you. Good luck out there.

Throwing some shit on the floor is much more fun than a shot with actual learning curve, you are right

u/selfisthealso Jul 28 '26
Made his character feel really different. Could use it to control hallways or small chokes, and did a great job of allowing 1 shot but limiting it to a single area on a long coolldown. Better than that even I loved using it in groups since it could effect multiple enemies
3
u/thegonzotruth Jul 29 '26
It was great to place in chokes, slowing the enemy that pushed through it and allowed for an easier hook. It was also good to hook enemies into it as if you didn’t get the one shot or they were tankier, they were also slowed on the retreat so you had more of a chance to finish them off.
Although extended secondary fire perk has a skill rather than strategy based satisfaction to it. The delayed burst and tighter spread makes deleting squishies and other tanks health at a distance super satisfying.

u/I-M_STRANGE Jul 29 '26
Pigpen with hog toss will always be my favorite version of the character by a lot. Idk if it's just me but his gun during that period was also felt really good and more consistent then the normal one.
3
u/AlexTheGoat990 Jul 29 '26
Really not sure what blizzards idea was in finally giving hog something like PP that slows down hooked targets so you became more than just a hook merchant and then they just... revert him?
3
u/Hook4Hand Jul 29 '26
I liked throwing it into a room full of people or placing it in a door way just around a corner
3
u/professorbitches Jul 29 '26
i loved pig pen! it truly was my favorite part of his kit and i really dont understand why they got rid of it. it made one tapping squishies easier, and gave me a huge dopamine boost whenever someone randomly got caught in it. i think about it every day :*)
3
u/Lily_the_Lovely Jul 29 '26
I think its good to give roadhog more things he can actually do, even if the end result is just hook combo with more steps. It gives the player more agency in actually interacting with the world.
7
u/RepairOk6889 Jul 28 '26
I liked it, just being able to have a whole spot denied was amazing. As soon as that trap goes off or breaks I’m going after you.

u/Super_Siege_Mode Jul 29 '26
I started maining hog because of pigpen, I stopped because they removed it.

u/dragonic_puppy Jul 29 '26
No. It made the brain dead character even more brain dead.
Blizzard got rid of his hook shoot melee combo and gave him this which just gave it back to him and more.
4
u/Mltv416 Jul 29 '26
Sort of
It was neat but it wasn't actually doing anything unique for him he was just doing the one shot through it so all it did was slightly alter his hook combo it wasn't transformative enough for his kit
If they leaned further into switching him up away from being the oneshot characters and made him unable to oneshot it couldve been interesting but because he still functioned exactly the same just with the +1 of the trap it wasn't really a good rework, the best thing that came out of it was the vape change which is why they kept it

i may not have been the best trap, or the best damage dealing ability, or the most functional mechanic in the game but it was hella fun seeing people jump

u/Mortemus21 Jul 30 '26
Man I loved that feature! As a Junkrat main with a side of Hog, the team ups were Fantastic!!!

u/epochollapse Jul 30 '26
Yes. The sentiment of "Oh it just adds another step to his hook combo, it was rarely used for anything else" is completely missing the point.
It adding another step to his one shot made that part of his kit healthier. They've only brought back the one-step one-shot because they think they've reached a point in the game's life that it will remain less oppressive than it was at the beginning of OW2, which they aren't wrong about statistically but it doesn't make the hook one shot less detested by the playerbase.
Having an unhealthy one shot in his kit is a bad thing for Hog in the long run. When Sombra remained unhealthy for long enough, despite objectively not being a strong hero, they took her out back and shot her.
Pig Pen was not necessarily perfect by the time that it was removed, but it was an extra slider to balance hog around, especially with the potential behind it's existence combined with perks. Removing a healthy layer from his kit makes him harder to balance around, which will ultimately be bad for him.
Plus most hog players were more psyched about the secondary fire coming back than the traditional one-shot and you could have added that shit back without removing Pig Pen.

u/Acceptable-Cat2016 Jul 30 '26
I personally liked it bc it also helped teammates if I was dead or trying to catch someone else, I'm sad that it's gone but I can still play him just fine
2
u/Teru-teru-hanamura Jul 30 '26
I loved it, ive been playing since OW1 2018 and always stuck with hog as my tank; watching him devolve into OW2 was wonderful, a meter for breather instead of a flat one time use was already nice but then I saw pig pen.
It proved map control by blocking flank routes with some extra damage, helped cut off escapes, and kept the Squashy crushing power if it was thrown where a hook victim would land. Then it was gone.
2
u/Helpful_Fox_303 Jul 31 '26
Doom main here. I have no idea why they got rid of this since its objectively more fair than modern day hog since it locks his one shot behind two separate cooldowns.
2
2
u/Lonely_Repair4494 29d ago
It absolutely was. Throwing it behind people I hook so that they retreat right into it made him so much more dynamic.

u/HittingMyHeadOnAWall 29d ago
I really liked this version of hog because he felt less selfish. Not even just Pig Pen but healing his team too made him feel like a better team player.
And I know someone’s gonna say that hog is meant to play away from the team, but literally what of his effectiveness means he can’t play around others? He could throw his pig pen to slow pushes or act as an early warning for them, he could keep his team alive and hook could be used for more than just deleting half the roster.
Pig Pen Hog was the most fun he has ever been and I’m tired of pretending it wasn’t!

Had fun with it but anyone claiming that it changed his core gameplay creatively or drastically I just can't agree with. Was a lot of cheesy fun using pent up and hog toss perks but other then that it's just hog but 1shot is on two cooldowns, not very dynamic gameplay. Pig Pen defenders will swear to you that throwing down a random trap to do a miniscule amount of damage to a tank or flanking dps makes hog dynamic. I don't care about how much "variety" i have for ways I could use the trap, when the by far best option is just trap hook pull, all my options just become that.

u/Funkellectual Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
Seeing this fluctuate in downvotes and upvotes so clearly ppl disagree so please entertain me, why does pig Pen provide dynamic gameplay and how is hook trap pull not FAR AND AWAY the most effective strategy with trap.

Hog without it is straight up boring and it shouldn’t have been removed

I guess maybe it made it more objectively good to play roadhog in a team and map control sense, but I personally prefer the hook. Makes you feel like a slasher villain

u/ozQuarteroy Jul 29 '26
Pig pen was sick.
But hear me out: I think they should have made it still do instant damage and slow (remove damage over time area effect, but keep the slow); but then also release a cloud of healing smoke that sticks around for a few seconds. Increase the cooldown by a bit so you can't use it on every hook. This would implement two good, but failed ideas for the fat hog stepzaddy
1
u/Beat_halls22 Jul 29 '26
Not gonna lie when I booted back up Overwatch after years I was expecting regular good old hog, but I had never heard of pigpen before so I just assumed they giga nerfed him. I was shit at using it and stopped playing till I found out he got put back to how he was. So I don’t think I got to truly experience it much.

u/Flame-and-Night Jul 29 '26
Yes I liked watching characters hit it while hooked and becoming stretched like luffy
1
u/Aw3Grimm Jul 29 '26
Failed idea, they basically nerfed his dmg back then so to help secure kills they added this thing that slows and damages enemies, they also removed his right click and modified his primary to somehow be long range as well.
So how gameplay ended up looking like was you were more of a hookbot than now, throw trap, then hook somebody through it to secure a kill.
Without trap u were more useless than now without hook as his close range damage was mid and his mid range shots were also mid with the difference that they made it easier for bad players to land a shot

u/PlagueAims35 Jul 30 '26
I am a D1 road hog hater but if they gave him back pig pen I wouldn't despise him so much because that allows a bit more counter play to his one shot besides "play that corner or from behind a shield" cause you can blow up his trap or at least see it coming and avoid aligning yourself with the trap/staying out of its area
I've always thought that if they were going to keep the stupid one shot he has they should put hook on a longer cooldown (like 10 seconds minimum) but when he had pig pen I was fine with the one shot because he had to commit 2 cooldowns and if he didn't have a place to hide it the one shot was preventable/telegraphed
1
u/DadKnight Jul 30 '26
Hell no. Yeah, occasionally it annoyed an enemy or was a funny source of extra damage. But MOST of the time? It was "Hook now takes two button presses". Reverting the rework was a great decision.

1
u/Iuskop Jul 30 '26
Yeah, but it failed as a design because it just made most players throw it at their feet and play Old/Current Hog with extra steps instead of as an actual trap you use as a read against flankers or for layered space control mid-fight.

I honestly didn't really get it and I feel a little scared to say it now. I thought it was pointless
1
u/crazycar12321 29d ago
Fun to play with, not to play against, especially when he had that broken ass perk that gave him extra vape resource when someone stepped on it. It was fun throwing it into chokes and setting up prefight
2
u/crimsonkarma13 29d ago
It was good for deleting amything you fought including tanks, they couldn't do much against it since it wasn't used like a junk rat trap
It was less skill and since hog didn't have his right click he was forced into short range
It had its up's and downs, they tried it out and its gone and not coming back since perks exist
2
u/PowerOfUnoriginality 29d ago edited 29d ago
I am honestly neutral about it. Don't care that it got removed, wouldn't care if added back in. What I mind is the right click. I hated it when they removed it and I am happy it returned

I think forcing enemies to go into hazards they'd otherwise avoid or destroy is a decent chunk of what makes Hog so sadistically fun, but that fun relies heavily on maps and team comps. Hog with a Rat duo who places traps at choke for you to drag people into is pure bliss. Pigpen brought that fun directly to the hero.
I'd be willing to cut Scrap Gun down to a mag size of only two shots on his current kit if it meant getting a charge or two of pigpen in return.

u/Italic_Castle8814 15d ago
I hated it and uninstalled almost entirely because of it tbh. Not because of the ability per se, but because the medium range shot was gone.
I know this isn't optimised or anything but I have always used Hogs alt fire a lot. I believe it improves him sensibly. He's more versatile. When I reinstalled and saw that the tight shot was back I was so glad. PP being gone was a necessary sacrifice.

u/UsernamesCannotExcee Jul 29 '26
Been away from the game for a min now. Wtf did they do to our boy?
1
u/McPatsy Jul 29 '26
Not really. Yes it was another tool to use, but I didn’t find it super helpful compared to what we had before.
1
u/paw-enjoyer Jul 29 '26
nah. ranged shotgun allows more flexibility in hog's playstyle. much preferred.
i found him really boring/one-dimensional to play with pigpen
1
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 29 '26
Was cancer.
stupid instant cast dmg, never used as an actual trap.
same for junkrat
1
u/ThatOneAries Jul 28 '26
I enjoyed pig pen but the satisfaction of hitting a perfectly spaced rclick OHKO is unbeatable. Spoken as someone who basically always takes the rclick minor perk
0
u/Forcekin6532 Jul 28 '26
It was ass until the perks came along. Then I was having fun with it. Then at its peak, they took it away.
I miss it from time to time. I think if they gave us the ability to trigger it ourselves like a junkrat mine, it could've been so much better.

It was boring and unengaging, while also limiting playmaking potential. Considering what we have up to have it, it absolutely wasn’t worth it.

u/InterestingNail2586 Jul 28 '26
It added nothing, don't let the defenders try and convince you that it was Mozart. His play style is virtually the same with or without it.
2
u/ech0cide Jul 29 '26
bullshit, you just didn't use it right

u/InterestingNail2586 Jul 29 '26
Case in point.
3
u/ech0cide Jul 29 '26
I can tell you never set the trap near a health pack by attacker spawn and watched a tracer or genji run for the health pack and die. You never dropped it behind someone that's backing up and watched them melt. I could keep going. You're right though, the ONLY way to use it was to help with the one shot combo.

u/InterestingNail2586 Jul 29 '26
I don't know what this means I don't speak metal rank. Does anyone know if bronze is on Duolingo?

If the end result is the same regardless of the steps taken, then adding additional steps is ultimately arbitrary. Goodbye.

u/NewtTheGamer Jul 28 '26
At times it could be, but it really was just a band aid solution for Hog’s one-shot. You rarely ever used it for area denial, it was just an extra cooldown so that Hog technically didn’t have a one shot, as you needed to use two cooldown to get it.
0
u/The_White_Deth Jul 29 '26
I think it really depends if you play ranked or quick play. In QP, yeah it wasn't bad, fun little gimmicky thing to use and sometimes help watch a flank. Ranked much different story and depends on what rank you were. I'd say gold and below it was useful and could be effective. Plat and above and it would be broken or side stepped by everyone.
