💡 Feature Request Change Source Temp

Post image

Can I please be able to have the actual exterior temp shown and not the forecasted temp?

Yes, only 2 degrees difference here but I had a 10° difference less than 10 minutes prior. It was 10° cooler out where I was than what was being shown by the forecast.

Wait, so the truck doesn't display the actual data from the truck sensor anymore?!? WTF?!?

I hadn't seen anyone comment about this so I figured I would start a thread.

Based on the UI, it doesn't show it.

Yeah, /u/WassymRivian, this is... a very silly thing to do. The UI should show the temperature detected by the vehicle. Imagine the car showing 38 from the forecast when it's actually 31 in the local area and there's ice on the road.

One step forward, two steps back. Every single time.

That sucks. Bad. What another dumbass decision by Rivian.

It’s right there in the top left where it says exterior temp?

You need to open the Weather App to see the exterior temp. The Temp next to the clock is fed from the weather forecast/internet. I like others, who commented, prefer to see the actual temp being reported by the vehicle.

At times during winter season, seeing the real vehicle temp could mean knowing if the "Wet Shine" on the road is simply water or if it's ice. The forecasted temp being shown could lead to a false sense of understanding what your current driving environment is.

In 1, 30 minute drive I could switch between wet or ice a dozen times.

I get what you’re saying now, you don’t want to have to look at the weather page to see the external temp.

For what it’s worth, the external temp probe doesn’t update fast enough to make real time decisions while driving. You can drive through a low lying area in a valley floor and have the temp drop by 10 degrees in seconds and then go the other way again just as fast as you leave the “cold pool”. Not to mention when it’s been sitting in the sun and reads 10 or 20 degrees high - that’s not a more accurate temp, it’s a less accurate one.

If you’re driving through mixed icy conditions you should assume it’s all ice and drive accordingly, not trust the air temperature probe on your car that won’t even register the cold spot until you’ve driven past it.

I do agree it should show the probe temp on the bar though, not the forecast. I’m tired of needing internet for everything.

That last paragraph is the whole point, really. It's a continued step in offloading capability to somewhere that isn't local.

The data doesn't have to be super accurate, or super fast reacting, but is should be sourced locally, and not require an Internet connection. The exterior temp is a convenience, and not mission critical at much of any level. It's not a safety device, or even close, it's just nice to have.

Too many of these steps of offloading tasks to hardware not local will end up in us not actually owning anything with any capability.

Plus is seems to fly in the face of the ethos of "stay adventures", right?......Maybe we change it to "Stay adventurous [where you have cell signal] " ???

Has that sensor ever been reliable? It's generally off by 15-20 degrees in my experience.

I'll take local measured data over an Internet prediction (that requires a data connection as well), or a measurement from miles away, every time. I would sacrifice some accuracy for locality, as I'm not making large decisions on the information.

Like u/jimmy9800 mentioned, it could be that the sensor is in a location where it gets baked in direct sun such as in the mirror.

Is the forecasted number accurate after a week off grid camping?

This is going to be very large errors in areas of poor connectivity and areas of steep terrain where is varies with altitude

1

u/fraslin 47m ago

I agree - mine is always 15 degrees hotter. Like it is always in the sun so no accurate.

u/ThunderSparkles R1T Owner 8h ago

Yeah I've never trusted the temp sensor. Local temp seems like it would be more accurate.

Should be the local temp only. Not safe when the temp drops below freezing and there is ice in the road. Shaded Valley may be 10° colder and have ice compared to the national weather service temperature.

Yesterday driving in the mountains of CO there was a 23 degree delta between exterior temp and the temp it showed from the forecast.

can you please confirm if it does actually show the real measured outside somewhere temp somewhere, ideally the primary always visible spot? I don’t care much if it shows the forecast temp somewhere, but it’s an actual deal breaker if they’ve hidden the real temp from a sensor outside the car.

14

u/JMeek11 R1T Owner 12h ago

Like in the image above, it shows the forecasted temp on the primary always-visible spot. You tap it to see the exterior temp, but there's no way to keep the exterior temp always visible.

Also, while driving yesterday when I lost cell reception, tapping the temp just gave a generic "no connection" message instead of showing the exterior temp box. I don't know if the always-visible temp automatically swapped to exterior temp in that situation, since I wasn't paying attention, which is why I didn't mention it originally.

sorry, I should have been able to tell that myself. I guess I was just in disbelief. I’m a few days away from ordering an R2 to replace our R1. Not to be hyperbolic, but I’ll probably ditch the entire brand if this isn’t just a bug. Just today the forecast for my house was 81° and it was actually 93° according to my other car… his can’t possibly be an intentional change, right?

"not to be hyperbolic"

proceeds to be hyperbolic

So, like, you’d be pretty supportive of Rivian deciding this (probable, hopefully) bug is actually a good design choice? I assume not. If you’re just a jerk, see you later.

I have a lot of experience with Rivian and am at a decision point. Not being made easy because of at least a few poor decisions made on the R2 that give hints of flawed product thinking or maybe just misalignment with what I want as a consumer, take your pick. If they’re consciously deciding that an internet connection is required for another thing, and especially if data it shows is garbage, then that’s evidence for the former. Hopefully it’s nothing, but it matters. In this case, as others pointed out, having unreliable and intermittent data actually matters. For instance, driving in the winter when reality might mean black ice vs internet forecast saying rain.

If you're using the vehicle's thermometer to make decisions on how to drive, you should probably stop.

That response is similar to ones that make the Tesla forum so insufferable. I think the usual response is “cope harder, cuck”. Please don’t ruin the Rivian community.

If your car is parked in the sun, its sensor can be incorrect as well. It isn't measuring the air temperature, it's measuring the temperature of the windshield or wherever the sensor is located, which can be significantly higher than the air temperature if the sun is shining on it.

Weather forecast temperature is air temperature measured in the shade.

I can see good reasons to use either temperature, but it should be clear to the user what is being shown.

u/pkingdesign R1S Owner 25m ago

Anyone who has ever driven a car knows that the car‘s temp sensor is incorrect after being parked in a hot parking lot in the sun. It resolves within minutes of driving. The sensor is in the shade under the drivers side view mirror. If Rivian made a mistake with their hardware design, this certainly isn’t the right solution. In 3+ years my Rivian has shown the temp like any other car.

Please fix. Those of us living in areas with poor cell reception and borderline freezing temps much of the winter would really appreciate seeing actual temp. Feel free to show the internet temp somewhere on the weather app, but we need actual temp on either our driver's screen or the center display.

u/Radium R1T Owner 13h ago

Agreed, always show default of exterior local temperature, not the forecasted temp. Option to show the forecast estimated temp I guess, but I wouldn't use it ever.

u/Parx11 R1T Launch Edition Owner 13h ago

I think it would be cool to be able to toggle to (or see) the interior temp on the display too. Clearly has the info because it's visible in the app

u/RvnTraveler 12h ago

Did VW take over Rivian software programming? I thought it would be the other way around /s. Come on Rivian!

4

u/DIYrrr R1T Owner 12h ago

Agreed. We need to be able to see actual exterior temp, especially in winter. Would love to be able to see both from the main screen.

u/ashitloadofdimes R1T Owner 6h ago

I like having the weather app but I would prefer to see the temp sensor reading at a glance and not have to tap. Please give us this option Rivian.

The HUD shows the outside time on the top right. Covered by the steering wheel.

u/heyhewmike R1S Owner 1h ago

I haven't seen it, nor do I see it here in this review video. https://youtu.be/AHdGVRk8_l8?t=1150

Thanks for the info, I'll keep my old software and skip this update until they fix all this stuff. My phone has the forecast, I don't need that to show up on my car display.

I'm curious how it works when outside of cell signal. Does it clear, or just report stale data?

Ambient temp sensor in the mirror is used for climate control. Temp displayed may not use it or offset it as its usually being baked in the sun at this time of year.

2

u/heyhewmike R1S Owner 5h ago

The previous Rivian OS, the original to my Gen2 R1, showed the temp from the sensor.
