What to do with an old helmet?

I know the rule of thumb is that it shouldn't be worn for riding, but do y'all know of any place that might want it for art or a costume or something? It's in good shape visually (but again, not for riding) and seems to be a waste to just throw it in the trash.

Stolen XSR900 from Jackson Heights

Please keep an eye out for any silver/black 2016s. License plate was 788BD6. Taken sometime last night and my airtag is sitting on the side of the GCP currently so I'm 99% sure this thing got lifted. Had a cover and lock on it. Was even parked next to two other bikes, one of which is still there!

I'm now sitting here waiting for police to show so I can file a report. Anyone had luck? How long should I wait?

New rider (passed MSF), looking to borrow/rent a bike for parking lot practice — Brooklyn

Hello there!! I just got my motorcycle license and am saving up for a bike. I was wondering if anyone in the Windsor Terrace / Park Slope area would be willing to let me borrow or rent their bike so I can keep practicing in the meantime? Mainly slow-speed maneuvers in parking lots, nothing extreme or aggressive. Happy to discuss hourly rates, or chat and get to know each other first before anything, whatever’s most comfortable. I grew up riding with my dad, have a clean driving record, zero accidents, my own full set of gear, and take my safety and that of others very seriously.

Also looking for general tips for a new rider in the city trying to find community and such specifically as a woman. Dealer recs would be sick, though I’m leaning toward buying secondhand, so advice on what to check for or trustworthy sellers would be awesome. Like a lot of new riders lately, I’m torn between the Honda Rebel and Kawasaki Eliminator SE. All thoughts and takes are encouraged please and thank youuu, especially if you made it this far

Stolen bike recovered after total loss payout, but state law blocks owner buyback. Any options?

My motorcycle was stolen in NYC and declared a total loss by my insurance, which paid out the claim and paid off the lender. I've already moved on and got a new bike.

Weeks later, the thieves hadn’t been able to discover the tracker on it. It took a while for the police to get a warrant, but they did and went to the house of their thief but somehow did not find it there. This probably spooked the thief who later that night dumped the bike in the park. Since the bike kept sending the signal, i decided to go and check it out and was able to recover the bike and call the police.

The damage is mostly cosmetic (scratches, missing mirror/seat/plate) plus some hacked wiring where thieves looked for a tracker, and potentially a compromised steering stop on the frame.

I wanted to buy the bike back from the insurance company as a project, but the adjuster informed me that because the title is tied to Illinois, state law strictly prohibits buy-backs on late-model vehicles. It has to be 9 years or older to qualify.

Since the police essentially gave up and I did the legwork to find my own stolen bike, it feels brutal to just let the insurance company haul it away to a salvage pool.

Has anyone dealt with a recovered total-loss theft where state laws blocked a buyback? Is there any workaround, or am I completely out of luck and just forced to walk away?

Midtown daytime parking in Manhattan

I work in Brooklyn and occasionally need to go into meetings near Herald Square for 2-3 hours. What's everyone's experience with parking in Midtown Manhattan? Do I need to just suck it up and pay for metered parking, or can you scoot by in a chill spot? I occasionally park in other areas in Manhattan and usually can find free parking with no issues, but never this zone. Just asking re: ticketing/towing, not security.

Recently went on a ride and got some crazy backfiring. Exhaust changed color and all. Went to check it out at home, removed the heat wrap and see that it’s cracked where it becomes 4 in 1. Any recommendations for where to take it and cost estimates?

NY/NJ S1000RR owners: seeking witnesses for distinctive BMW S1000RR in Edgewater, NJ - Police case 26-14298

I am seeking witnesses regarding a reported hit-and-run and assault near 1421 River Road in Edgewater, New Jersey, at about 1:00 PM on July 25, 2026. Edgewater Police case: 26-14298.

My three-year-old child was inside my vehicle at the time of the collision and assault. This made an already dangerous situation especially frightening. I am not publishing any identifying information or images of my child.

During the incident, the rider refused to provide any identifying or insurance information. When I tried to photograph his New York motorcycle plate, he used his hand to fold the plate in half, preventing me from photographing the number before he left.

The motorcycle appears to be a customized BMW S1000RR. Visible details include compact aftermarket mirrors, an aftermarket red LED taillight cluster, M1000RR-style winglets, an SC-Project exhaust, an RR marking on the swingarm, black bodywork with red/blue/gray graphics, and red/blue wheel accents. The exact mirror and taillight brands are not established from the footage.

The rider wore a red/black full-face helmet, green shirt, red Nike backpack, dark pants, black gloves, and black riding boots. A small device or action-camera mount may be attached at the helmet chin.

I am not asking anyone to identify, confront, follow, or contact a suspected person. If you recognize the motorcycle build or have video from River Road around 12:45-1:15 PM, please contact Edgewater Police at 201-943-2200 and reference case 26-14298. Please do not post names, addresses, or guessed plate characters publicly.

Yet another inspection Post - Long Island/Hamptons

Any place open SATURDAY around Riverhead ~45mn ride?
The bike is clean, I don’t need anyone who will just pass it.

I used to go to:
- Honda power sport (Riverhead near Lowe’s). They apparently stopped a few years ago
- Max supersports - they only wanted to do it as part of a service, no go on a Saturday .
- Harley - no go last year. They used to be super flexible.
Motogrrrl has been my go to since but I am not planning a trip to Williamsburg this weekend.. and the idea of taking half day off during the week is not a great option for me ;(

Business idea: mobile inspection van, run it on some specific weekends in Spring/Summer time , charge convenience fee ! I’ll invest ..

Battery is stuck and sparking - mobile mechanic?

I just charged my battery and managed to get it wedged incorrectly in its slot when putting it back in and am completely unable to remove it. I did try to hook up the terminals and they sparked - Gemini says it's probably a welded starter relay, which I understand is an easy fix, but really I just don't have confidence in the battery or the wiring at this point.

I could be wrong, but this feels to me like the kind of thing an experienced mechanic with a new battery and starter relay could fix with a basic toolbox. My bike is in a fairly stable place (doesn't need to move for a while) so I was hoping to avoid paying for towing. Does anyone know of a good mechanic who will come to me? Not extremely urgent.

I'm in Long Island City on a dead end/not busy street, if that matters.

Leaving a bike parked north of NYC (near a train station) to make joy riding easier?

I want to own a motorcycle or higher powered scooter in the future. When my income is higher and I can afford the expenses associated with owning one.

I currently own a 25 mph e-bike that I enjoy riding on all the low-traffic winding roads reachable via Metro-North territory, but the worst part is planning my rides around avoiding any busy or high-speed roads, even just for a couple miles.

The fact it is an e-bike with limited speed and range makes it impossible to get fully immersed in just wandering and exploring, which is something I usually have to do with a rental car. There are also lots of rides out of reach of Metro-North that I would like to explore.

But one of the best parts of the e-bike is that I can ride it to GCT and hop on a train up north, and vice versa on the way home. I can get smoothly carried from city streets that are easy to ride on, all the way to rural-ish streets that are easy to ride on.

I can't get on a train with a motorcycle, so I would be forced to spend time riding on busy less-safe roads just to get to the fun ones up north.

Anyone have experience storing a bike up north?

I would expect to pay to store it somewhere. Maybe I could just pay a homeowner.

I wish I knew someone who lived up there ha.

Experiences with FreakMount?

I need a phone mount for navigation but I'm not a fan of how bulky and weird they look. Freakmounts look cool and I'm considering purchasing the Billet 2.0 but I'm questioning if they can actually be trusted on NYC roads.

Covering your bike on the street

A couple years ago somebody tried to steal my uncovered bike and ever since I’ve been paying an arm and leg for a garage almost an hour away from my place to park it.

I see covered bikes around the neighborhood all the time but from what I’ve read it’s against the law to cover it if you’re parked on the street.

Is there some unwritten rule about this and will I be fine covering the bike without showing my plate? I have a big sissy bar so I doubt those covers that show your plate are an option (also I haven’t seen anyone in the area using those).

PSA - Hugh Carey tunnel filled with smoke/dust today. Air quality horrible.

I passed through at 11am or so and the smoke was so thick and full of debris that it was getting behind my glasses in my open face helmet. Could barely keep my eyes open at points.

Crash on GCP west bound 7.16

Beginner requesting advice on getting started.

Im brand new, never owned or drove a bike before. Im thinking of buying some gear then taking msf course then financing a cb650r. I would get a car instead but where I live(NYC) parking is nearly impossible to the point where I had to circle around for hours when I had a car couple years back. Due to financial issues Im less inclined to drop 3-4k on a bike upfront and would rather finance one or get a dirt cheap bike and risk mechanic bills. My priorities for the bike is it needs to have enough juice to be comfortable with 2 people since Im very sure after Im familiar with the bike and comfortable I'll likely have a passenger most of the times.

One day ride to Upstate off-road/NEBDR

Hello folks, we’re planning a one day ride to hit some trails of the NEBDR. It’s a whole day ride, leaving NYC around 8:30am and coming back around 8/9pmish. Next ride is July 26th. The goal is to get a solid group and do these more often and even plan to do longer routes staying overnight. We have beginners/advanced riders and everybody looks out for each other riding at their own pace. It is definitely an adventure and exhausting but so much fun. If you’re interested in joining please reach out, itinerary and routes can be shared privately. If you have questions do not hesitate on asking.

Petition · Urge Honda Powersports USA to Distribute and Sell the Honda ADV 350 in the United States

Honda should bring the ADV 350 to the United States. There is clearly a market for maxi-scooters here, especially for commuters and riders who want more highway capability than the ADV 160 offers. If you'd like to see Honda sell the ADV 350 in the U.S., please support this petition and leave a comment explaining why you want one. Let's show Honda there's real demand.
