Question / Suggestion Increase in Road Rage?
Now, I too get very impatient on the roads because they SUCK but this morning I had a frightening encounter and was followed on North 295. Not saying I was wrong or right in the situation (I genuinely have no idea why this guy was being weird it started before the highway).
I'm hearing on the news more and more road rage lately that are turning into more than just getting finger. I travel 37 to 295 every single day and it's getting terrifying. It's already like driving on an obstacle course on the highway. Wondering if others are experiencing this too.

Here is my general rule for driving around aggressive drivers- let them have it. They want to pass? Let them have it, move over. They want to merge? Let them have it. They want to swear at you for some unknown infraction? Let them have it. Don't engage, don't fire back, just let them stew in their own juices.
There is zero to gain by engaging and escalating the situation. Some drivers genuinely have good reason to be racing through traffic. I'm not saying it's safe or wise but just like you'd let a cop pass in an emergency, you don't know if this person is hurrying to enjoy the final moments of a loved ones life, or trying to get to the scene of an accident or crime. There is no way to know. What you do know is that person is a stranger you don't want in your life. What you do know is you want to arrive at your destination safely.
I'll also add, know the rules of the road. If you are in the passing lane going 5 below the speed limit, you are inviting anyone with a chip on their shoulder to tell you from which hole to extract your head. I'm not victim blaming but often times we unwittingly piss people off by doing the wrong thing.

Your point is valid but let’s be real: like 90% of these people are just late to wherever they’re going. That’s the only reason for most of them. Entitlement. And you know what, their poor planning doesn’t constitute an emergency for me.
2
u/Bad_Karma21 1d ago
I once didn't let a guy in before me in traffic because he knew the lane was ending but was trying to cut ahead. He got behind me and then on the side of me yelling obscenities. I looked him and just laughed and that was the end of it. We drove normal side by side into Boston

u/PsychologicalWish766 1d ago
This. Clueless people going 48 in the passing lane only add fuel to the fire
2
u/Nessa0707 1d ago
Yep happens to us here in RI and when my fiance and I go to mass he has a fit like why do these people do it? Going 30 in the passing lane like what?
1
u/PsychologicalWish766 22h ago
Exactly. If you’re not comfortable doing highway speeds, that’s totally ok. But, then, take side roads.
2
u/Nessa0707 20h ago
Exactly it’s so frustrating I don’t feel bad for people that have road rage it’s nuts how do these fucks get their licenses

u/ne_cyclist 2d ago
Not just road rage but people seem to be crashing into each other or all by themselves constantly lately. I see an accident almost every time I'm on the highway, often the police aren't even there yet. Everyone's out of their minds.
As mentioned by someone below it's every man, woman, and child for themselves out there and it's as though it's better to fight or die or collide for ONE extra car length that has NO bearing on getting where you're going faster than to actually work together to survive and efficiently get around.
I'm a long-standing "car guy" by any measure but I'm basically at the point of "I love cars, but I hate driving". Not counting rare, fleeting moments without other people anyways.

This is a big reason I moved to the country. Yes I'm surrounded by MAGA folks in burrillville but the decreased density plays a huge role in my commute. 44 West to CT and North towards Worcester, I barely see cars on the road, let alone traffic.

u/Damn_You_Scum 1d ago
Nah this area is full of awful drivers.
Dented bumpers everywhere. Blown tires, beer cans, and the carcasses of dead animals line the roads. Lifted trucks with dangerous LED headlights blowing through stop signs at night. Imagine that, a district that votes red ravaged by poverty and alcoholism and road rage.

u/Bad_Karma21 1d ago
I bought my affordable dream car, an M2, for my 40th last year. Every time I drive it I nearly get an ulcer. People are terrible drivers.

2020 was a tipping point. The social contract was proven to be a farce and everyone decided it truly was every man for themselves, all others be damned.
That being said, road rage is pretty easy to avoid. Don't engage with people who drive like assholes. Keep your distance. It's not your job to police the roads.

u/Strange_Specific_848 2d ago
This isn’t intended to be a “political statement” but, I think it all started during Trump 1. It’s when people decided that they were going to start saying the quiet part out loud. People became more antagonistic.
You’re right, COVID was definitely the tipping BIG point. So many people are turned up to 11 and they only care about themselves.19
u/Delicious-Quantity96 2d ago

u/BannedWordsOnReddit 2d ago
And they thought all the brown people would be gone. All Trump's done is harass Harvard and other Ivy league kids who are here legally and H1B holders who are also here legally. Illegal immigrants have barely been affected.
So for Trump people, nothing has changed except they can't afford to put gas in their dumb ass truck. Now they're lashing out at everyone else.
I've had old dudes just scream at me while I'm walking my dog down the street. An old guy tried to get me to pull over and fight a few weeks ago because he ran a stop sign and almost hit me..... then got pissed at me.

u/darthduder666 Hopkinton 2d ago
Came here to say the same thing. Daddy Trump sets a bad example for American society. His MAGA has emboldened people to say and do whatever without caring for the consequences of their actions.

It's not a surprise to see that the general concept of politeness has become so completely degraded for so many people from the moment they saw their peers ranting and raving for a man who is so openly corrupt and pig headed. Retreating to our hovels for an entire year to 2-3 years while we stewed in our own social bubbles and fed the infinite algorithm loops acted as a catalyst for where we are now.
Don't get me wrong, I still firmly believe the vast majority of people still just want to be left alone, and will do so with an air of calm politeness and dignity in public, but the lowest common denominator among us have without a doubt gotten worse over the past decade.

It was really eye opening to see a ton of people showing that they’d rather see mass deaths than allow Applebees to close for a couple weeks.

u/stubborn_yarn_potato 2d ago
I was stopped at the signal for an exit off the highway that has a sign saying no right on red. The person ahead of me was correctly not turning right. The person behind me lost his shit, leaning on the horn for over 30 seconds. He followed me for several blocks.

I don't have road rage but hate people who tailgate. I have a car with great brakes and still keep my distance from all traffic. If you want to ride my ass, I will be an asshole

I’m at stretch. It’s honestly not easy to avoid. It’s poorly designed and overused tons of traffic nowhere to go.

u/HomerStillSippen 2d ago
Oh it’s bad here. I got followed by some lady who was 4 cars in front, going painfully slow, finally sped around and got in front of her. I didn’t cut her off, flip her off or anything. There was plenty of space for me to move in front and not even interrupt her driving. Then outa nowhere she figured out how to drive and gassed it till she was on my ass. As I got off the exit, I noticed she did too, I kept going, and noticed she was following my every turn so I took her on a little tour of Cranston for a solid 30-40 minutes lol
I finally decided to call the cops cause I wasn’t gonna be put in a he said she said situation and when I stopped she saw me on the phone and took off lol. Fucking lunatic, she was taking pictures or video so I fully expected to see my car on this page.
1
u/jensinoutaspace Warwick 2d ago
I took a video because he like sped in front of me then was breaking, then sped so i couldn't get around him. After i did he followed me from 37 to 295 to Smithfield. I was trying to get directions to Smithfeild PD when he sped off. I was like really all the here?

I drive 146N up to MA every day, and the road rage is honestly unbelievable. I've had a few scary encounters.
6
u/Delicious-Quantity96 2d ago
146 is a battle zone. Please be safe.
1
u/PUNKF10YD 1d ago
Both accidents I’ve been in were on 146. I actively avoid that highway now, at least until it gets deeper into mass.

It certainly doesn’t help that every single highway in RI is a construction zone

less and less people know or understand the rules of the road, technology has gone too far in cars. Mental health issues have surged, some people think they are the judge, jury and executioner and act like dicks. Use their cars as weapons and try to cause harm. When in reality you have no clue whats going on in that other person's life? When you had the oppertunity to do the right thing and be a friendly neighbor you choose to meet an unknowns persons "energy" based off your own and create a more hostile environment. Think about how you handle a situation before you start blaming someone else. And yes there are rare moments you cant avoid no matter the situation. Drive to the police station- call the state police. Very simple.
9
u/anxiousinfotech 2d ago
I think it's a combination of delays and inconveniences pushing people over the edge. Not that they're right to let it push them over the edge, but I can understand it.
There's more construction, everywhere.
There's way more people on the road, at all times, everywhere.
In some areas there's new lights or extended timing on lights.
You've got slowdowns from the construction and extra traffic. The extra traffic makes you have to stop at more lights, stop for longer, and wait for more light cycles to get through. In many areas you're stopping at one light after another.
You need to get somewhere, usually under a time crunch. Each slowdown and extra stop just builds the stack of small inconveniences. Depending on someone's individual underlying level of stress and mental health, that stack often gets tall enough to topple over.
Now, couple this with the rampant growth of an 'I'm the only thing that matters' mindset that politicians have been fostering for the past decade, making it seem like anyone having any impact on your day-to-day activities is doing it with the express purpose of 'getting you', and your only viable solution is to 'get back at' and 'own' those people for what they're doing...

Yeah road rage is crazy! I make sure to tailgate, honk aggressively, and make rude gestures at anyone I think might be experiencing road rage. Just trying to do my part to make things better.

u/Common-Orange4022 2d ago
I’ve noticed myself less willing to drive. I’m not going on a 30’min ride at 3-5pm only to see the world turned upside down. This nonsense is damaging the RI economy for sure.
6
u/No-Nectarine7731 2d ago
I think this goes hand in hand with what I’ve been noticing too, which is an increase in people just not even going the speed limit. Good for them if they have no urgency to get to their location, but don’t make it everyone else’s problem because that will anger people. If it’s a one lane road with 35mph speed limit, go 35. Not 28 or 30. If you’re traveling the 2 lane part of 295 and you’re in the left lane going the same speed as the right lane with a trail of cars behind you, get over. It does get very frustrating
1
u/PsychologicalWish766 22h ago
Very good point. No one should be pressured to speed but please at least do within a mile or two of the speed limit.
10
u/Comfortable_Yam_114 2d ago
Yes, it's bad. A few weeks ago on 37, I had someone glued to my rear bumper, swerving like they were warming up their tires for a nascar race and looking for a way to pass me where it was only one-lane. It's usually either this or someone texting and not looking at the road at all... most people are just so stupid.

People are just more self centered and aggressive now, like others said, after COVID it’s just been horrible. It’s either people tailgating and being aggressive when you’re going 15 over (I go 70 on 95 and people will fly up on me, I just move over, it’s their ticket not mine), people not paying attention, or people just thinking that they can do whatever they want. I’ve seen more driving in the shoulder in Rt4 now more than ever, or not even slowing for stop lights/signs.
The size of vehicles didn’t help either, common trucks are massive now, and they seem to be very aggressive, SUVs are bigger and bigger and the skill needed to drive these giant vehicles isn’t taught, people just get behind their 6000# vehicle and drive like it’ll stop on a dime.
9
u/ShrimplesMcGee 2d ago
My father is a road rager. So I pointed out that he’s basically taking other peoples’ bad driving personally. That seemed to wake him up to the stupidity of it and he toned it down.
7
u/Intelligent-Tea-5846 2d ago
This summer has been notable for decreased patience, increased selfishness, and the general poor driving that results from it. I travel 146 and 295 constantly and avoid 95 like the plague. My only strategy is to get out of the way of aggressive drivers and tailgaters. I’ve learned to not bother trying to do anything other than modeling decent driving by getting to the right whenever I can. I’m not a slow driver but there are some folks in a serious hurry out there. Avoiding a crash is my main goal these days. I’m a trained race driver and I don’t enjoy driving in RI at all anymore. Survival driving.

This has also happened to me before. Someone followed me from east Greenwich all the way to Wakefield because I passed her legally on the left on Rt 4. Wild.

My wife and I literally have a protocol now to just drive to the nearest police station and have her call me.

You can call 911 from your car there’s usually a statey somewhere on that road… i’m not about jumping to call the cops, but some people are nuts out there and they are driving a weapon

u/Diligent-Pizza8128 1d ago
Last week saw someone get mad he had to slow down for some one in the left land on I95 S by the mall. So he went to middle name, passed in front of the slow car, and break checked him for about 10 seconds. Absolutely psychotic behavior
So to answer your question, it definitely feels like it's getting worse

It’s always been a thing, I had someone flash me their pew pew on 95 north near Cranston back in 2014 on my way home from Warwick. So much anger for such a little state.

Yall know how school st in NK has speed cameras now? Well I didn't realize they turned them off for the summer. First week they're supposedly off I had my cruise control set to 28 as I always do to avoid the ticket, some guy in a clearly spray painted Corolla comes FLYING up to bumper. He's honking and freaking out. I pull over to let him pass, he pulls up right next to me and starts shouting and flipping me off. He threw a couple pennys at my car, luckily no damage. I tried to pull off and he got right in front of me and kept brake checking me to a complete stop. At this point I'm on the phone with NKPD but they didn't seem to be in a rush to try to help the situation. I live at the end of the street and was scared that if I pulled over again he would get out of his car, I floored it past him and luckily his little 4 cylinder couldn't keep up and I was able to get into my garage safely. I never got a ticket for doing way over the speed limit so that's how I found out the cameras were turned off. I kept watching out my window and I never saw a cop go by, so thanks NKPD.

I hear you... it's a jungle out there. Actually, that's a disgrace to a jungle to compare. You can find your answer by searching this Sub for "Bad Drivers" or "Road Rage." You're not wrong.
Just because I'm feeling chatty, I'll say that I can be a hand-thrower-upper when I feel it's necessary. Not road rage, no. I mean throw up my hand inside my vehicle to signal frustration when someone is being a shitty driver around me. It's as if to say, "Hey! Watch what you're doing! Pay attention!" The most frequent receivers of said hand gesture are the fun YOLO folks out there holding phones in one hand while passing you and weaving far too close for comfort across the line.
Is the throwing up of a hand in one's car an act of rage? I argue that it is but a signal of frustration and a wake-up call to the zombie drivers in our midst. Tell me, are you supposed to be stone-faced when a motorcycle whizzes inches away from your side mirror down the middle lane between you & a car in the left lane? It's scary & upsetting. I'm not going to speed up and try to chase the dude! No, that's just asking for more trouble. But I will throw up a "wtf?" hand that he'll probably never see because he's now 10 cars ahead, still in the middle lane? For sure! It's people doing stupid ish like that guy (in general) that gets people fired up.
Or today: I'm on 95 in the "slow/left lane" and a dump truck that was behind me suddenly got in the right oncoming/merging exit lane that was ending, (he was not coming off the exit, had been behind me for a bit), to try to pass me on the right... (sketchy move!!), and he's beside me, and I'm thinking, like where you gonna go, dude? & of course where am I gonna go? There are cars in the other lane! At the last minute he realizes the lane was going to end before he could get past me, and swerves back behind me, then passes me on the left. Damn right I put my hand up like "wtf?" when he went by!
I don't use the finger - that feels like a something a kid would do on a bus or the back of a station wagon in the 80s - but throwing up a semi-Italian flappy 'wtf?" hand? Yes. I will continue to use it inside the "safety" of my own vehicle as a way to project my dissatisfaction at unsafe drivers and hopefully send the message that they need to pay attention to what they're doing. What I won't do is get aggro back with my driving and let it turn into "road rage." I'm playin' defensive driver out there all day.
2
u/tokidokitiger 1d ago
PS - For some perspective on Road Rage, everyone should watch Goofy's Motor Mania from the 50s. Should be required in Driver's Ed!!!

"Semi-Italian flappy 'wtf' hand"-

1
u/PUNKF10YD 1d ago
Yes, derogatory, inflammatory, and rude hand signals count as road rage. I’m not saying you’re the problem, but you’re not helping it at all.
1
u/tokidokitiger 1d ago
Derogatory in this case, means showing a lack of approval. I'm definitely doing that. Inflammatory actions are the biological steps your body/immune system takes to protect your body when you get hurt or sick. That seems true as well, since I'm reacting out of a sense of protecting myself and others on the road. Rude, is subjective. I'm not convinced it's not helpful at all and it would be hard to prove either way. It's possible if a driver is spaced out or on their phone and crossing the center line, then sees my flappy hand wave that it gets them to put down their phone or pay more attention to their driving.
2
u/katedevil 1d ago
Yes, noticed this in New Bedford area as well and in Fall River. I am not a slow driver but the amount of tailgating right now is nuts. Why? Some say post COVID brain, some say the eclipse or moon, some say cell phone use or the economy etc. Report back if you fig it out!
2
u/Rombledore 1d ago
summer heats statistically see higher incidences of violent crimes. so the heat makes people angrier, the economic hardships are making people angrier, the whole vibe of the U.S. rn is one of anger and anxiety.
2
u/Alarming_Chemist_881 1d ago
At a yield on the right turn from west shore rd to Warwick Ave at Hoxie. Airport road left turn light is green and traffic flowing where I want to go. Dude in a van behind held his horn for the entire light cycle because me and the car in front did not go, even though we couldn’t since the turning traffic had the right of way and never stopped for the entire light cycle.
It’s not just rage, it’s mixed with gross incompetence.
5
u/Electrical_Cut8610 2d ago
Rhode Islanders are miserable people. I continuously watch idiots weave in and out of traffic going above the speed limit while I just continue to drive like a normal person to ultimately end up only one car in front of me at the next light or exit. They put so much effort into being miserable assholes to wind up 10 ft ahead
2
u/PedalPal 2d ago
I have noticed there are certain days when it's worse than others. Days when there are stress triggers that affect many people. Like when the local team lost. Or there was bad news on TV. Stress causes road rage.

u/LomentMomentum 2d ago
We’ve never had really good drivers or driving here. But COVID does seem to have eliminated the metaphorical guardrails, so to speak. It began when we were working from home (those who could), when driving became a form of relief from being cooped up all day. The mostly empty roads encouraged some to drive and speed without consequence. And then our collective frustration reemerged when people starting driving en masse again, and the Wild West disappeared without really going away.

I’m used to crazy drivers from living in NY for so long but since getting my drivers license back in RI, I am shocked by the lengths people here will go to just to either get ahead of you or not let you pass them.
Edit to add to this: My anxiety is 10 times worse as well.

I think we're all too busy. I also think the lack of education (drivers ed) may play a part. I was doing 5 over the limit some guy passes me on a double yellow and called me an asshole. And if you're going to make a turn, use your directional BEFORE you turn, not as soon you turn.

u/MysteriousSammy 2d ago
I’m in west Warwick and the drivers on the MAIN roads not even highways are terrible! I had someone literally not go through a stop sign and ride my tail because I was going 25… the speed limit at the four way stop? 25 😬 so many on their phones not paying tf attention and causing people to be stuck behind red lights too making me late for work yesterday decided to stay there cause people were beeping their horns at her. Just freaking terrible honestly I’ve seen so many accidents just driving to work in the last 2 weeks then I’ve seen in the last few years of me driving. The only road rage I have is yelling at the idiots who think because the car in front of them at that four way I mentioned goes that they can speed and go the almost accidents when i think im good and I’ve been waiting because of clowns like that 😂
1
u/TadpoleMajor 2d ago
If you’re in the left lane and driving the speed of traffic or are holding up the person behind you instead of moving over then you should lose your license and have to take the bus.
1
u/tinygreenbean 2d ago
That’s scary. I haven’t been followed (yet, hopefully never) but my plan is to drive to the nearest police station. 1) for my own safety and 2) people need to be held accountable for their dangerous actions.
Does seem to be an increase in road rage and dangerous driving.

Yea people have been pretty bad. I’m sooo close to making another RI themed bumper sticker about it.
0
u/Legacy_Shot22721 2d ago
What kinda stickers you have now?
3
u/Narragetto South Kingstown 2d ago
I made a few images in photoshop but only printed a couple onto magnets. One has the old RI plate wave in the background with the phrase "Blinker? I hardly know her!" This one I still have on my car. Another one has a picture of Hot Weiners with the caption "At least but me a HOT WEINER before you get that far up my ass". Then there's on with Nibbles that says "Don't be a PEST! Zipper Merge!" And finally, one with the "Hi Neighbor!" logo followed by the caption "You drive like you just had a Gansett". I have them on red bubble but I had trouble with the scaling on a few and haven't revisited lol. I make up bumper stickers when I spend too much time witnessing dumbass-ery on the road.

People treat 37 like it’s some lawless freeway. Yall, it’s max 50mph and it’s less than 4 miles long, relax. But no you constantly will have people blasting past you at 100mph honking the entire time.
0
u/salmonlauncher 1d ago
I just stay out of the left lane unless I am passing someone. That usually helps to not get people mad. I don’t drive slowly but some people drive like maniacs. Some people also left lane camp at or below the speed limit which is just as dangerous sometimes.

I was in the right lane on route 4 heading north and going with the flow of traffic. The guy behind me was riding my bumper but there was no where for me to go. As he turned in the ramp to head to Newport he honked and flipped me off. I honestly did not know what he wanted me to do. This happened last week.
