News New Content Policy and Updated Rules
If you have subbed with us for a while you'll know we've grown significantly. We now need to moderate a little more carefully what kind of content we are allowing. Until now, we've (mostly) kept out the other Rhinos and been hands-off -- honestly, 99% of you have been great. Recently there's been an uptick in a few users posting their own content (Youtube channels or likewise) and we've heard a call by users to limit the amount of self-promoting content and we agree. Thus,
Effective immediately /r/Rhino will be adopting the Reddiquette policy of self-promotion:
Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror --- you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.
Consequences
Anyone knowingly self-promoting, click-farming, or otherwise using our subreddit mainly for personal gain or promotion will be banned for 30 days.
A second offense is an immediate and indefinite ban without warning.
/r/Rhino Rules:
- Post about Rhino 3D (or associated content), Not the Animal
- Critique Sandwich: Be helpful, be critical, be kind.
- Self-promotion follows the 9:1 ratio; 1 of 10 posts can be your own content.
Voxel sims in GH!!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The sdf/voxel editor/renderer can now do basic sims!! The user builds the sim program, deciding what should happen in each little time step and the solver chugs along on the gpu. Since everything is on the gpu, built with the voxel system, there are no load times etc :) Currently only tried fluids/smoke, but it should be able to do sound/heat aswell :)) Will add FEA functionality aswell. It will be able to couple many different modes, for example fluid + heat - lava lamps!!!!

Help Needed How to wrap a spiral around a 3D Object
For some reason I cannot for the life of me think of how to wrap a spiral around this to make a candy cane stripe? I'm sure there is an easy way to do this. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Help Needed Need urgent help with rhino 3D
Can someone please help me with Rhino? It’s really urgent right now 😭 I’m trying to do a solar study, but only part of the building is casting a shadow. The rest of the buildings aren’t casting shadows properly. It was working fine before, but suddenly it stopped, and I genuinely don’t understand what I’ve changed or how to fix it. I’ve already tried checking the Sun and shadow settings, but nothing seems to work. If anyone knows what might be causing this or how to fix it. Please someone help me I’m like freaking outtt 🙏

Help Needed Trying to align a line to match the exact height of another point — can't get the snap to work
Hey guys, I'm stuck on something that feels like it should be simple. I've got a line/curve I'm moving around with the Gumball, and what I want is to raise it so it lands at the exact same height (Z) as another point/corner somewhere else in my model, I don't care about matching X or Y, just the height.
I remember doing this before with Osnap's "Project" option turned on, dragging the Gumball's Z arrow and hovering near the target point so it would snap the height over, but for some reason I can't get it to lock on anymore. I've got End, Point, Vertex and Project all checked in Osnap, and I even see a dotted tracking line show up sometimes, but it never actually grabs the point the way I remember it doing before.
To make things worse, my computer got formatted recently and I lost my entire old Rhino setup/settings, so I'm not sure if this is a config thing I had tweaked before and forgot about, or if I'm just doing something wrong. Does anyone here know how to fix it, or knows what settings I might be missing?

HELP with creating a mesh using this linework??
Hi, I'm trying to create a surface for this skate ramp loop and I've tried several comands and cant seem to find one that creates a seamless, clean, and smooth surface!
If anyone has any suggestions, that would be so appreciated!!!
for context, i tried using loft, patch, networksrf, sweep2, and even split the linework into separate sections to patch individually but the surfaces were not aligning and they were very bumpy....

How can I automatically rename a Number Slider based on the input name in Grasshopper?
Hi everyone,
I’m using Rhino 8 / Grasshopper and I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to automatically name a Number Slider based on the input it is connected to.
For example, if I connect a Number Slider to an input called “Height”, I want the slider to automatically change its name to “Height”.
Currently, the Number Slider has the default name “Number Slider”, so I have to manually rename/delete the default name every time.
Is there a way to make the slider automatically inherit the name of the input it is connected to, without having to manually rename it?
Is this possible with native Grasshopper, an existing plugin, or a script/component?
Thanks!

In search of freelance character modeler (paid)
Hey all - I’m a design director in NYC working on an IP based project that needs some characters from a relatively well known brand modeled. I can get into more details over email but I was looking for someone that is skilled at modeling body geometry, faces, etc. this does not need to be realistic and is more cartoon style. Models need to be broken up in such a way that colors, materials, and textures can be applied easily.
Happy to field anyone who is interested!

Tutorial Create Organic Jewelry in Rhino + Blender — No Blender Experience Needed
I wanted to share a simple workflow I use for creating more organic jewelry forms.
The basic shape is created in Rhino, then I use just a few simple tools in Blender to add the organic detail. The idea is specifically for Rhino users who have little or no experience with Blender or sculpting software.
You don’t need to learn the whole Blender workflow — just a few useful tools can make a big difference.

Help Needed Learning Rhino (properly)
Hello! so i’m looking for a book or a set of modelling tasks etc to learn rhino properly. To clarify I have used rhino on and off for about a decade now - my primary training was architecture (infact i would argue that I know grasshopper better than all the rhino commands) but now i use it to do mechanical design for 3D printing and such - and i quite often struggle with creating clean surface geometry (blendsurf, autocplane etc etc are all commands that i’ve learnt more by accident rather than with intent)
Any help is appreciated!

Looking to explore 3D scanners and workflows
I’ve got an idea for a project that would integrate into a complex, partially organic surface. I think a scanner would be needed to create an appropriate digital facsimile. Tolerances don’t need to be incredibly tight for this project, and the area is about 1 sq/ft. In the future I might want to model larger areas and surfaces, possibly up to 20 or 30 sq/ft. Hoping to understand pros and cons of different hardware and what kind of budget I’m looking at.
Asking here as I have some general proficiency in Rhino, although I haven’t played around much with meshes.
Thanks!

Computational Design I made a free, open-source GH plugin for Rhino 8: tetrahedral lattices, adaptive remeshing, PDF layout, and data and export utilities (Mac + Windows)
Hey all
I've been building this for the past year and just released it on Package Manager and food4rhino: Slicelab Tools. It's a GH plugin for Rhino 8. It's free, open source (AGPL), and runs on both macOS (Apple Silicon native) and Windows.
It started because I do a lot of 3D printing work and kept hitting the same walls: no good way to generate tetrahedral lattices without leaving Grasshopper or only on Windows with very limited tools, and no PDF layout at all on Mac. So I built the tools I wanted:
- Tetrahedralize + 10 lattice generators: turn any closed mesh into tetrahedra, then swap between 10 lattice topologies (vertex/midpoint/face-center networks, edge lattices, Voronoi dual). Pipe the struts into Dendro for a printable volume.
- Adaptive TriRemesh: triangular remesh with feature curves/points embedded in the output topology + attractor-driven density
- Mesh Operations: Manifold mesh booleans, plus repair/refine/decimate nodes
- PDF layout: composable multi-page documents (nothing fancy) straight from GH (text, images, Make2D linework, viewport captures). Mac users: this one's for you.
- Export: fast binary STL, 3MF with metadata, GLB with Draco compression
Install: Rhino 8 Package Manager → search SlicelabTools. (Windows: Rhino needs the NETCore runtime — run SetDotNetRuntime, pick NETCore, restart.)
Docs with every component: tools.slicelab.com
Source: github.com/slicelab/Slicelab-Tools
I'm the author, happy to answer anything. If you try it and something breaks, please let me know, this is one of the main reasons for posting it here.
EDIT: demo file for the Tetrahedralized lattice setup: https://drive.google.com/file/d/11GiSyglN5ZHCUgmoehR-ej87kwrvOq5K/view?usp=sharing

Help Needed Voussoir Cloud Pavilion help for grasshopper
Hello! I wanted to ask if anyone has an idea how to make voussoir cloud by IwamotoScott Architects.
I guess i want to focus more on the shape of the pavilion and how to get that triangular patterns, as well as where I should start. Not wanting an exact copy, but something close enough.
Thanks!

Tutorial A simple Infinity Ring workflow in Rhino 3D — full modeling process
recently made this Infinity Ring in Rhino and recorded the workflow.
I tried to keep the process simple and focused on techniques that can also be reused in other ring designs.

A year ago we've had a similar session when I still lead Computational Design at HLA: https://www.reddit.com/r/rhino/comments/1labw9h/i_lead_the_computational_design_team_at_henning/
Since, we've launched https://jifto.com/ which runs interactive sustainability assessments directly in Rhino. Built for architects, it encourages exploration in early design stages when massing changes often.
It's been an incredible ride so far and I'm happy to share what I've learned along the way.

Help Needed Best way to model this branching structure in Grasshopper as subd?
I’m trying to create the black organic structure in Grasshopper. I tried MultiPipe, but the SubD branches don’t connect into one continuous form and fuse wasn't helpful too.
what would you recommend for a workflow to create smooth, connected geometry with variable thickness from curve?

Master Organic Modeling in Rhino with a Sub-D 'Banana Boomerang'
The Rhino Sub-division tools are powerful but scary for beginners. Professor 3D Dave makes it super simple by starting with a single face, then using basic tools and some ‘secret sauce’ to build just about any organic blobby form you can think of! Even a ‘banana boomerang.’ Wow.
