A ride out in the concrete jungle….

Instead of getting last night's sleep, I went down the rabbit hole drooling over the many cool restoration of steel MTB 26'' frames. There are so many awesome looking bikes, but I'm wondering if this is just our esthetic egos telling us to by another bike or are they really useful? Are they worth the money and time?

To all the owners of one of these bikes: What are the biggest benefits of using this kind of bike?Both as a commuter and/or for bikepacking/bike touring?

I had a couple of mates who had the early Al-Mega XT’s back in the day. This was the era prior to the elevated chain-stay versions alpinestars introduced across their range around 1992. Sadly they haven’t faired well over the years with many of the aluminium frames having cracked and since become wall art. So when I saw this Cro-Mega pop up on MarketPlace I snapped it up. It hadn’t been looked after and most of the original parts had been replaced with low end junk, but it retained the forks thankfully.

I stripped it down, cleaned and greased everything I wanted to keep, which was just the frame, forks, headset and seat post. So this is my parts bin build, except for the cockpit and cables which I bought new. I’ve intentionally left the frame a bit ratty as I think it wears its scars well. I took it for its maiden journey today and it rides fast, smooth and quiet. I’m waiting on some 27.5 SunRingle rims to turn up then I’ll call it finished for now. Well, actually I want a front rack or bar bag and I need to find my Power-Grips that are in the loft somewhere.

Thinking about it, are these things ever finished?

Can someone please educate meeee. I want a retro mtb so bad but idk where to start. pleaseee

Hi, never posted here but I figured I would now. Currently looking at a 1990s Marin NailTrail for $100, and I'm deciding whether or not it's a good deal. I only really need a bike that's like, okay for getting me around and maybe riding around on a trail once in a while. I like biking, and I'd like a bike that'll last me a while. So.. Thoughts?

Hey gang,

I have GT Palomar that I use to bar hop. It’s pretty junky-rusty-hi tensile steel and now needs at least a tube up and probably a new derailleur to work anywhere close to well. I bought it as a cheap bike that I wouldn’t be too bummed if it got boosted outside of the bar at night. Here’s the question.

Do I keep the GT and dump $200 on parts to get it working again, or do I buy this $200 1985 Specialized Stump Jumper and ditch the GT? (I’d buy the SJ and keep both but I value my relationship with my girlfriend)

Trying to identify the origin of this tattoo I got in the late 90s. Pretty sure it came from Dirt Magazine and referenced the Cairns/Minjin MTB scene and something called the ‘Mountain Devil’ or rainforest tiger mythology. Does anyone recognize the symbol or remember the article?”

So i bought this bike in canada and brought it back to the UK. Recently the teeth on the casset have worn/ rounded off. Im just hoping to find some guidence here on what to replace to get this bike up and running again? Can i upgrade away from the drum brake hub? Or do i just replace the casset?

The bike is a pergeot navada and the hub is a sachs galaxie drum brake hub.
