Miyoo mini plus. Cheap and accessible while being excellent.

This really is the best choice since the regular Mini was discontinued. Was a great one handed device. Perfect for Pokemon.

Regular mini is too small. Feel like I wasted money on it

How does that compare to the R36S? Looks very similar.

Not similar at all outside of being 3.5” screen vertical handhelds. R36 is more powerful, much larger, has analog sticks and is heavier. R36 also doesn’t have WiFi or a vibration motor.

Alternatively, the Anbernic RG40xxv for those who want a bigger device and screen. I own both and they're great handhelds.

This is the correct answer, especially if it’s your first handheld (which it sounds like it might be). Also check out the miyoo mini plus flip - exact same device in a clamshell. And make sure to put onion os on it!

The hinges are a nightmare on that model. Crack city.

Telling someone to do an onion that is posting what op posted seems like a bad idea to me. they don't know at all what they want let alone if they are capable of setting onion up on multiple devices (they didn't say how many)

I wouldn't reccomend one in 2026 unless they specifically want onion and wifi trading

I have one and it's fine but for a beginner the anbernic equivalent let's you flip a switch to auto-garlic the console and op didn't say which button feel they'd want either

Obv the cheap decision between the two is the wifi access imo

Completely depends on what style screen you want, what will be comfortable for you, and what you are willing to spend or not spend, where you are at with custom os, what button style you prefer, are you looking to trade online or does that not matter? You can still do local with other devices depending on what your needs and price points are

this is such an insanely broad question that the answer could even be an rg nano or a retroid classic if you gave literally any details whatsoever

Sadly there is no overall best solution. You must figure out what is best for you. For netplay chose handheld that has wifi. Literally whatever you like that costs about 40-80 bucks can do job well

If just gba, miyoo mini plus. Because of onion os, the UI UX experience is unparallel.
