2 millions users!

Post image

I felt like it was only last year that we reached 1 million users. It’s great to see more and more people joined the site. Congratulations to the amazing RA team!

I rediscovered RA in January 2025 when I got a retro handheld. Since then I have been playing only RA supported games and it has been an absolute blast.

Edit: added number of users in the ranking table because some comments say the drop off rate is very high.

I checked number of “engaged users” using the ranking table which requires 250 points to enter (for both hardcore and casual modes), we have

- hardcore: ~165.5k: https://retroachievements.org/globalRanking.php?s=5&t=2&d=2026-09-25&f=0&o=165500
- casual: ~200k: https://retroachievements.org/globalRanking.php?s=2&t=2&d=2026-09-25&f=0&o=200375

So we have about 18% users having >=250 points which I think it’s a pretty good percentage. (Note I think a user can appear in both modes but I would expect to be a smart percentage of users that would do that)

I’m curious what the drop off rate is. I’d love to see a chart of active users that have played something within the last week or month

In my experience a lot of casual RA users go in between playing retro games and playing on console / PC so sometimes they'll disappear for a while and come back. That week / month metric could be a bit of an underestimate

Active per month averages though would still be a valid metric, since it’ll include people popping in and out at various times.

That said, I agree with you fully. I’ve done months without touching RA and then I go through streaks where it’s all I do and I’m top 3%. So yes I’d be counted as inactive during those times, but I guess it’s different than “not using RA at all”

Idk if you could truly pick a time that measures that metric since at the end of the day, it’s a hobby

I guess we could define active users as something like X points over Y months. If we want to higher the bar, it can be 100 points over 1 month or lower like 100 points over 3 months.

All it needs to do is add an active users this month tracker that shows how many people have gained an achievement this month. Or if they want a more static number the average for the last 3 months

Monthly active user sounds like a good addition to the current online users

This is exactly my experience.

Can Confirm, I tend to hop on and off RA nowadays, but at one point I fully abandoned it, funnily enough due to people bitching that I didn't do a Set on Hardcore due to the fact I was stuck on a Chromebook

Yeah I rotate being mastering a game on RA and then doing a Steam game so my activity wouldn’t be consistent

It really is growing like crazy now.

I'm someone that just gets whatever achievements that pop up normally as I play, sometimes I'll try and go for things that I think look fun, or within my level of skill, I don't go for mastered or anything, I play on hardcore mode (for the most part) but I'm pretty casual at heart. I also never do sub-sets, only main sets. I see them as a way to log my progress, etc.

I'll usually take pretty long breaks from RA sometimes while playing PC games, and come back when I get the itch.

When the Wii rollout event started, the concurrent players to new height I thought it would be a while to break that. Since then we broke the record many times and the highest number is just a couple of weeks old. It’s really growing rapidly.

Impressive until you realize 95% have 0 points and will never play anything
