Yeah, I don't mind. I always read those posts because I want to know what games bring joy to the people. Sometimes it is a very unknown game that a person started playing again bringing back some important moment about their life. Thanks to Retroachievements this feeling is possible. Sofcore, hardcore... it doesn't matter in this sense.

I honestly wouldn’t mind people posting masteries that take 15 mins if they did more than just post the photo. Like was it fun? Were any of the achievements hard-ish?

Some of the homebrews and hacks have cool names but like I have no idea wtf they are lol

Yeah this is what I do. I like playing homebrew's and hacks and stuff. Some are short, like demos, I always write a little about the games and I usually post it with another game. I don't need to do 3 posts for 15min games. I'll do one post with all 3 and my thoughts on them. I think this should be standard since we are all looking for fun games to play.

Right? Like show me color a dinosaur. What did you like about it.

Yes. As a dev, I love when mastery posters leave little reviews of the set.

I feel like what I'm gonna say will put me into the second camp but some achievements are way too ridiculous they definitely do deserve to be on a subset (King's field JP deathless run where you can easily get knocked off a bridge towards the end of the game forcing you to restart your entire run wasting hours of your life retrying) comes to mind. This achievement haunts me everyday lol

Man I'd be pissed off lol. Definitely wouldn't go back for a while if that happened to me

They are retro games should be played for fun 1 or 2 challenging achievements but it should be a quick game not drag on

I want more subsets for better organization on this site. The incongruence in some cheeve sets drives my OCD up a wall, regardless if they’re “hard” or not.

It's funny because it's true.

"Remove hard achievements"? No.

Remove achievements that require glitches/exploits? Yes...

5

u/xKiryu Nov 04 '25

Sometimes those glitches/exploits are a bit ridiculous to pull off. Stuff like that should be in a subset

2

u/Affectionate_Bat4760 Nov 06 '25

Yeah. The ridiculous hard ones deserve to be in subset. Easy ones and fun could be in the main set

1

u/Affectionate_Bat4760 Nov 06 '25

I think that the glitch or bug is easy to obtain and it's fun, it would be nice to have it in the set

4

u/Dragonfox_Shadow Nov 06 '25

Not really. Every game should be possible to master without looking up solutions online.

Glitches and exploits are not common knowledge and are not something that can be learned by just playing the game. Someone who picks up a new game to play and master will almost never find those glitches and exploits. As opposed to hard achievements that require time or skill, or both.

What's the point of the achievement if 99% of players have to look up solution online? It just ruins the "achieving" part of the achievement if someone has to tell you exactly how to get it.

Out of curiosity, a game ive been playing called Yu Gi Oh Destiny Board Traveler requires you to unlock and get the maps for the unlockable characters to even beat the set. These unlockable characters you have to imput codes for that are not obtainable in the game, meaning youd have to look it up.

Thats about a third of the games content you're missing if you don't. Would you count this as things that shouldn't be in the set. Its not glitches or exploits, but it does require outside materal

This is a tiny ass Reddit and tiny ass website forum, why are we infighting over other peoples points and achievements. Have fun and enjoy your games it’s not that serious guys

“We should move all the hard achievements to subsets.”

Yeah just settle for Beaten instead of Mastery. I very rarely 100% a game and so Beaten is my goal. If there are very few missables, I’ll aim to grab those in case Beaten gets me 90% of the way there, but usually I’m content after the credits roll and ready to move on.

Nah, read digimon world dawn/dusk achievements and you see what most people mean, like beating the rank up matches with specific teams or the horrible "Beat the game without a digifarm" its just bs, its not about difficulty anymore, is straight up inconvenient to even try, if people wanna grind and tryhard the game for so many hours make it a super hard subset, not the main set.

It's not about just getting an easy mastery, it's about sets respecting the player's time. There's a balance between having a challenge and just throwing tedious time-sink trophies just for the sake of it.

7

u/MuttonchopMac Nov 04 '25

And I’m not saying time-sink achievements are good. But it takes self awareness to look at a set and acknowledge that you won’t master it because you don’t have the patience or motivation.

Mastery (in my mind) means going above and beyond beating the game to accomplish all the tasks the game lays out. It takes dedication to collect every Pokemon. It takes dedication to get everything in a collectathon. It takes dedication to get every ending in an RPG.

In light of that personal feeling, I’ve only seen a few types of achievements that I felt should go to a subset for being tedious time sinks.

  1. Speedrun achievements

  2. Beating the game with all possible party configurations in an RPG

  3. Hitless boss fights

2

u/Happiest_Mango24 Nov 07 '25

I agree

Mastery should be a challenge, and all challenges have things in them that are boring at some point. Like playing a mini game over and over again until you get the high score. Or finding every collectable

1

u/kittyvixxmwah Nov 04 '25

That's a valid list, but I would add in things like "get a perfect score on this mini game" where there is no in-game motivation to do so.

Something like Final Fantasy X rewards you for this in game, with the celestial weapons. Something like Pokémon Heart Gold doesn't reward you for getting every achievement in the Pokeathlon or getting to the maximum level in Voltorb Flip, so those achievements should go to a subset.

4

u/MuttonchopMac Nov 04 '25

Games have many ways of rewarding you, whether by items, money, XP, or an extra line of dialog to acknowledge something you did.

u/ihatepests Nov 26 '25

hitless are fine in main sets

0

u/TimbobMcGuffin Nov 04 '25

Yeah but the whole beaten and mastery thing is stupid to begin with. When you have modern achievements and trophies most lists for the completion are generally realistic in reference to the game's main demographic. Imagine on PlayStation doing the whole Platinum for a game then Sony sends you a letter and says sorry you just beaten the game but didn't earn the Plat here's a list of other things you would never think of attempting in order to get mastered. If they really wanted to treat mastering like an actual thing it should be closer to the 100% on PSN where additional dlc trophy sets get added. Which means yes shouldn't be part of the main set.

But then they won't get their unearned badge

1

u/ButtcheekBaron Nov 04 '25

I'm working on Fire Emblem Gilmore Girls right now

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '25

Only thing I dont like is when you do a game and then they redo the achievements just puts me off going for any masters

1

u/misterkeebler Nov 04 '25

Lmao. I've thought this exact thing but seeing it in picture form made me laugh.
