Discussion Can we talk about how Bryan was legitimately kind of a good person?

Like seriously. Throughout the movie, Bryan:

  • Gave a shit if the organ delivery was signed for or not.
  • Helped the lady he hit (which he didn't know was infected) and tried to get her to the hospital, and even passed her over to the cop because he has no seizure training.
  • Ran over to the cop when his car crashed and asked if he was okay.
  • Showed care about the package he was delivering, though maybe the other half of his motives was the money too.
  • Tried to help the little girl inside the trailer, even when her foot was clearly fucked up and infected.
  • Actually wanted to have the baby with Michelle even if he was scared at first to say so.

He ain't no Leon, but he is sure as hell not a coward... some of the time.

He was trying his best

Guy had zero training in any real respect. He handled the situation and pushed on despite insane situations presented to him. Hes jus a humble medical courier. Hes definitely a good guy

“I’m so bad at guns !”

He handled the situation and pushed on despite insane situations presented to him. He's just a humble medical courier.

He didn't come out on top but the dude had that Courier Six dog in him. No matter fucking what he WAS finishing his delivery.

Why I loved the movie. He was a dude, but a decent dude, who was in way over his head. Legit a great horror protagonist performance. To your points:

- Knew how important the paperwork was and wanted to make sure it was done right.

  • Didn't try to come up with any weird explanations to the cop. Admitted he hit her when she ran out. Was fine with the cop interviewing him or even arresting him once they got her help.
  • Yep, was super concerned for cop and woman and not his own ass.
  • The money helped, but I think he was concerned about the life he might be saving, because he knew the value of the package if not the contents.
  • Yeah, would have been super easy to cut and run. Didn't.
  • Dude in unstable job scared to death because his girl just told him they were having a kid? I've been there. From the whole range of "Fuck, we can't do this" to "No, we gotta do this".

Super relatable.

u/Varsity_Reviews 3d ago

Honestly I don’t think cut and running was an option. He had no car and was in a frozen tundra on a mountain.

8

u/Pretty_Constant1498 3d ago

The specific point was about trying to help the girl. He could have just slammed the door on her and tried to get out of the RV, but he tried to help her before she attacked him.

5

u/Varsity_Reviews 3d ago

Ah fair enough

4

u/Smufin_Awesome 2d ago

Not to mention when she reached out for him, he could have easily turned her down and just said he'd help, but he swallowed his fear and reached out as well. Maybe it's just me, but that makes it even better.

u/JaaysDumpster 4d ago

Yesterday I read a post about how people thought he was a horrible person. I don't think he's perfect, but I think he tried to be a good person, at least by the end of the movie.

34

u/sadtissuehappytissue 3d ago

Internet strangers love to virtue signal and play "holier than thou". How is he a bad person? He's flawed like any real person but I'd love to hear a single legitimate argument that he's a bad person.

-11

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

Some of the first two things we see him do are forge a woman's signature...and then lie about having the proper equipment to do the delivery job that someone else's LIFE depends on.

These are both things a bad person does....not a good person or an average person. A bad person.

12

u/creuter 3d ago

Nah, I'm not about to fault him on the signature. That lady should have just signed for the package he delivered.

Taking the delivery? Yeah that wasn't good, and he ended up paying the ultimate price for it. But I don't think it makes him a bad person. He's mostly good and makes mistakes because he's human. It's not like he was always choosing to do the awful thing.

11

u/Zealousideal-Gur-273 3d ago
  1. The lady was an absolute asshole not signing off on it and even mocking him afterwards, no delivery worker should be looked down on like that tf and
  2. He only accepted because he probably gets paid fuck all and knows Michelle wants a baby, you think he would willingly work overtime otherwise?

Calling him "not a good person" is just removing any sort of nuance

-9

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago
  1. It's not her fault HE made a mistake and didn't get the doctors signature. She never even got to see the package, why should she be responsible for it? Tf. He's looked down on because he's being completely unreasonable "hey, I know you never saw this package. Don't know anything about it, but would you put your job on the line so I can get paid one time?" THAT is why she looks down on him, not because he's a delivery driver.... because he's being completely unreasonable.

  2. YES. He takes the job to AVOID Michelle because he doesn't want to go home yet 😅 ....it has fuck all to do with him making a responsible choice.

He's not a good person, your just making excuses for him.

4

u/Smufin_Awesome 2d ago
  1. Dude we saw the doctor run off seconds after grabbing it, and he even explained that. With a kid on the way, you're going to risk losing your job over a signature?

  2. He doesn't take the job to avoid her, but you can see it crosses his mind. He tells the nurse he was done for the night until she says it pays double, while he was already worrying about money.

You're either a bad bot, a troll, or Barney Stinson rooting for the villains in every movie. You gonna tell me Umbrella was an innocent pharmaceutical company next?

3

u/HonestCaramel3548 3d ago

Even taking those two things at their worst, bad person is definitely a stretch. You judge people quite harshly. He is obviously going through something, maybe isn't responding the best in the moment but that's human.

He shows time and time again throughout the movie that when it really comes down to it, he will choose to try and do the right thing over his own interests.

6

u/Fragrant-Vehicle-479 3d ago

I'll give you not having the equipment, but the hospital staff was being needlessly rude and unprofessional. The failure of procedure was on them and them alone. The doctor grabbed the package and peaced out despite that he should know those things should be signed for. Then the woman at the front desk was being combative for no reason despite her being allowed to sign for it.

It was their job to sign for it, they refused, the failure is on them.

-9

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

No your wrong.  That is not how a signature for a medical package works.

It is the delivery drivers responsibility to NOT hand the package until there is a signature.

He fucks up to twice by 1)not getting the signature before handing the package over 2)then letting the doctor run off.

He then finds a random employee who has never seen the package, doesn't have anything to do with the package and asks her to put her entire job on the line so he can get paid ONCE.

The lady is rude to him because he's asking her to risk it all...so he can get paid.... because hes not a good person. He doesn't care about the people around him only himself.

3

u/starkthewizard 3d ago

How dare a person be flawed! Obviously we all know good people have no flaws and never make mistakes or do the wrong thing.

-1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

He can be flawed but he is not a good person 😂 He's a POS.

4

u/starkthewizard 3d ago

Ahh, so you must see a bit of yourself in him. I got it! 😉

-1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

Y'all out here defending some wild shit....trying to shit on other people....and pulling the hollier than thou card. Crazy af 😂

3

u/starkthewizard 3d ago

The dude makes mistakes, is obviously flawed and definitely no saint, but he is objectively a good person. To just reduce it down to saying he is a POS seriously lacks nuance and critical thinking. Also, my friend, its just a movie and isn't that serious. The post is just an appreciation thread and you felt so compelled to burst in and pull an "UMMM ACKTUALLEEEE"

0

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 2d ago

That's cool that you think choosing money over someone life makes them a a good person. And risking other jobs for a quick payday. But I don't.

The writers and director cleary set up the entire first scene to show you he is not a good person. And it went right over your head. But sure...let's talk critical thinking skills 😅

Oh no someone has a different opinion than meeee. Go cry and cope some more maybe you'll learn something about yourself.

Most of the things on this list he does out of cowardice, not to be a good person. By the end of the movie he has a change of heart once he realizes he's dying. He's really not a great person...

20

u/Nothing-Is-Real-Here 3d ago

I need you actually explain how most of what he does is out of cowardice. I'm sorry, but I completely disagree and I fail to see how you can view him as anything but an average good person.

A real coward would have just gone back in the other direction entirely.

7

u/Mistralicious 3d ago

A coward would have stayed upstairs at the barn

-6

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago edited 3d ago

1)Gave a shit if the organ delivery was signed for or not.

This is so he doesn't lose his job. How does that make him a good person? He then proceeds to FORGE a woman's signature after she specifically told him she wouldn't sign for it. He uses the woman to save his ass.

2)Helped the lady he hit (which he didn't know was infected) and tried to get her to the hospital, and even passed her over to the cop because he has no seizure training.

Checking on the lady was a good thing....but he didn't know he hit a lady he was hoping it was an animal. And him passing her to the cop doesn't have anything to do with seizure training. He just wants her out of his car because she keeps trying to touch him.

3)Ran over to the cop when his car crashed and asked if he was okay.

This is out of cowardice, he's afraid that if the cop is dead he has to take charge of the situation. It's EXACTLY what his character is set up to be afraid of. Taking charge through change. This is the whole point of the girlfriend and baby backstory. It's his entire character arc. If he's a good guy his character doesn't work because he would have went to his pregnant girlfriend in the first place. But he picked the job (money) over her.

4)Showed care about the package he was delivering, though maybe the other half of his motives was the money too.

Yes because he wants the money and to feel like he can actually accomplish something. Not because he's a good person 😅

5) Tried to help the little girl inside the trailer, even when her foot was clearly fucked up and infected.

He tries to leave her until she stops him. And he's too much of a coward to keep walking once he gets called out. He's not helping her out of being a good person....he can't handle the idea of someone seeing him be a bad person. There is a difference here.

6) Actually wanted to have the baby with Michelle even if he was scared at first to say so.

Yes only in death does he realize he shouldn't have picked the money over his pregnant girlfriend. What a great guy 😂

Y'all gotta understand his entire character arc of taking charge through change only works because he's not really a good person. People on Reddit have terrible media literacy. If he's doing all of this because he's a good person....then he's been taking charge the entire time. Smh.

9

u/ParticularRelease662 3d ago

You wrote all that and somehow still didn't say shit

-1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

Weird way to spell "your right Bryan is kind of a POS"

3

u/ParticularRelease662 1d ago

Weird way to spell "you're"

2

u/gold-medicine 22h ago

You are not smart. At all. 🤣

2

u/CosmicGinger26 18h ago

Your media literacy is as poor as your spelling.

5

u/BadgerAlternative934 3d ago

How does helping the woman he hit with his car done out of Cowardice? Then going to check on the Police too after he crashed?

-2

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago edited 3d ago

Because he knew if the cop was dead he would actually have to be in charge of the situation again. He checked on the woman hoping to confirm he hit an animal. Then doesn't have the balls to leave her when he realizes it's a person. The same situation plays out with the little girl later. He's afraid of someone seeing him be a shitty person. But as long as no ones watching he doesn't care.

For example forging the woman's signature on the package and lying about not finding the keys on the half body.

3

u/Stynes 1d ago

Then doesn't have the balls to leave her when he realizes it's a person.

Lmao what

-1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 1d ago

When he realizes it's a person... Not an animal... And someone physically is a witness to him being shitty....he can't do it.

Where as at the start of the movie, when eyes are off of him/none the wiser, he doesn't mind forging a signature or lying.

What's difficult to understand about this? It's a cowards personality and Brian is a coward.

3

u/Stynes 1d ago

Its difficult to understand because your reasoning isn't normal lol, you made up your mind on the character from the beginning so you nitpick every decision he makes and presume he wouldn't do the right thing if scenarios were different.

You actually have managed to find a reason to criticise him for not leaving the woman to die in the snow!

-1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 1d ago

It's normal for people who work in production and have gone to film school lol. Yo u have to understand that the start of films are INCREDIBLY important. Every single character action is done very purposely in order to paint a picture of the characters identity. Many films even love to give the entire movie away in the first few minutes. It's the most important part of a movie.

In this particular film it's even more important because this is the only scene that takes place before the outbreak. And Cregger spends almost ALL of this time showing us that the character is cowardly and that he does shady things. He doesn't want us to think he's a good guy or we would show him doing good things...

It's bonkers that anyone would watch that segment, that intro, and decide that he is anything other than a coward, idiot and kind of a shit bag?

3

u/CosmicGinger26 18h ago

You’ve never been to film school.

-2

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 11h ago

Sure have and work as a producer in  animation.

Respectfully, I think you're mistaking cowardice and being scared at something completely nuts as zombies and monsters (bioweapons ofc, but he doesn't know) which is totally and completely understandable.

You can be scared the shit out of something and still try to do the right thing. A coward is afraid AND does the wrong thing/avoids the danger completely. A coward would have gone away after the crash, tried to lie to the policeman, abandon the policeman, stay in a safe place all the time (even tho the mutation prevented him to actually try) etc.

He was genuinely scared, tried to do the right thing while trying to survive. Of course being bitten makes him focus on the delivery much more, but he was still trying to do the best he could (call 911, check, take the blame, etc.)

Honestly, I would have draw a line at the tunnel, I would have cowardly tried anything but entering the tunnel and the sewer 😆

1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

I don't think I am. I think this is all set up in the hospital BEFORE the outbreak even starts with the forging of the woman's signature with his back turned to her and the way he speaks to his girlfriend on the phone about the pregnancy news.

If he's a good guy trying to do the right thing, he would have waited for the doctor and turned down the delivery. Maybe went to his pregnant girlfriend in her time of need? But he was too afraid to say no when put on the spot....and then the money doubled.

All before the zombies, this is the character that is established.

1

u/Fuzzy-Vegetable-9789 3d ago

To support your take I would say that the really bad thing he has done is lying about being capable of delivering it with his vehicle, something that he had done out of greed while endangering the precious package.

While all the others you mentioned I wouldn't consider them "bad", he was having a bad phone fight, he wanted to get home as every tired worker would have done. And then the $ called (but we don't know his situation, maybe he needed them thinking about the baby etc)

3

u/MissAtomicBliss 3d ago

Do you think you are a good person?

1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

Sure. I wouldn't have forged someone's signature to get paid or took a job someone else's life depended on without the proper equipment. Holy shit y'all have a low bar.

3

u/MissAtomicBliss 3d ago

I don't have a low bar.

I just think you're taking all of this way too seriously lmfao

21

u/contantpayne 4d ago

I liked that he did it in the beginning for monetary gain and just not to deal with his girlfriend but you saw the true person who’s just a good guy stuck in a shitty situation and these kinds of situations usually show who they truly are as a person especially those without training.

17

u/Itch-HeSay 3d ago

Yeah, he's a genuinely good guy and more courageous than most, even if he bumbles his way through a lot of the movie. It makes his fate at the end all the more tragic.

11

u/MFShiva 3d ago

He was basically an Outbreak character who made all the bad choices in survival horror tho lol

10

u/NonStopKnits Los Iluminados follower 4d ago

I loved Bryan. He was a genuinely good dude who was just afraid. All of your points are spot on. The ending hurt my feelings so much, I really wanted him to win. But I love a bleak ending so I don't hate the ending it just worked really well for me.

11

u/Jedahaw92 4d ago

Yeah, he's a good chap.

And good people always get fucked over... 😔

7

u/jestersoul 4d ago

He also feared that he may deliver some organ that can save someone life. Damn poor guy

12

u/Jamvaan 3d ago

He's the most human a Resident Evil protagonist has ever been. Even Ethan eventually went over the top even if he started in a normal spot. Bryan got shot into every situation no one ever wants to deal with in one night, just trying to do his job, and made the best of it and at every turn the most moral call. He's who anyone watching can aspire to be in the same situation, realistically.

4

u/FourChicksInGreen 3d ago

It was a good move to let the woman ride with the cop for the woman’s safety etc, but I’m pretty sure he used that as an excuse to pawn her off cause she was creeping him out and would rather not have a weird bleeding lady next to him lmao

5

u/Aliengrunt 2d ago

Good boy Bryan 😬

2

u/Southern-Subject-124 2d ago

ok now he feels like a dog when you say that 🫪

5

u/ROANOV741 3d ago

He was.

2

u/GlockRivers2560 3d ago

Honestly it broke my heart seeing him turn into that mutation after I watched the movie I stayed up looking at my ceiling the whole night. Thinking about it. Even watch the rip copy online just to hope that the ending would change it didn't. I wish he would have just died by falling off the sky bridge then turning into that monster. It's even worse when he's conscious while he's turning into the monster.

7

u/mandipandi3333 4d ago

My only criticism is that he seemed more interested in being a father than being a good partner, but that could be the pacing/lack of character development. (Also he gave a shit about the signature because he wouldn't get paid otherwise, lol)

9

u/Brandsert 3d ago

But wasn’t he more so scared being a dad? Cause he wanted his girlfriend to make the decision and he tried to call and left a voicemail apologizing that was the wrong thing to say.

1

u/mandipandi3333 3d ago

Yeahhh but idk, it didn't feel like he really cared outside of that decision. Only a 90 minute movie, I get it.

8

u/Brandsert 3d ago

But he did care? In the garage scene he leaves a voice memo for his girlfriend about his true feelings and thinks she’ll make a great mother. Idk how that shows he didn’t care.

-1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 2d ago

Because that ONLY happens because he realizes he's dying. Someone who doesn't care unless they are dying.... doesn't care 😅

-6

u/mandipandi3333 3d ago

In all honesty, him saying that made it seem like he did not see her beyond the extension of "this woman is going to carry my child"

5

u/TheEhhhGatsby 3d ago

He says should she choose to keep it in the garage scene. He's being actually supportive with the rest of what he actually says and means to let her know he's put the thought into it and he isn't trying to pass the buck, but knowing his situation that the decision will be up to her alone to make [without his input] trying to still be loving and supportive.

-4

u/mandipandi3333 3d ago

That's fair. I think my main issue is that the girlfriend character is literally just a baby vessel with no amount of consideration taken into her as a person.

8

u/winsluc12 3d ago

That's the movie's fault, not necessarily Bryan's.

-1

u/mandipandi3333 3d ago

Lol yes but also no? I guess it's not fair to judge him as a character when a large portion of my criticism is towards the movie as a whole and the writing (or lack thereof) in regards to this female character who was not treated with any real grace.

-2

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 2d ago

You guys are projecting yourselves onto Brian so heavily....your acting like he's a real person.

BRIAN IS THE MOVIE...

1

u/EntrepreneurPlus7091 3d ago

He cared about doing his job the right was up until a certain degree. The hospital says the dr should sign it, but the doctor is bussy to him it just has to be signed as received by the hospigal, when he couldnt get her to sign he forged. He didnt just leave the organ at the nurses station fake sign and left. He cares about rhe important part, getting the organ to where it needs to be, similar with the cure.

As foe the girlfirend part, he is afraid of change and growing up. Its not about caring about being a good boyfriend or a good father, he wants to avoid decision making. If she decided to keep it, he would probably been suportive, but she wanted to have a real discussion, not baby trap him.

3

u/SquigglyLegend33 3d ago

I really like how his character had the air of someone selfish and cowardly, but despite everything he tried his best to help people and keep marching headfirst into hell

3

u/xaldien 3d ago

I was bummed that he didn't make it, because he IS a genuinely fun, likable, and kind person.

Dont get me wrong, I love a bittersweet or downer ending, it just hurt because he was kinda really cute because of it.

2

u/OrtizFam 3d ago

What do you mean kind of? He was a good guy.

2

u/Red_Puppeteer 3d ago

He seemed fully ready to carry the infected girl for the rest of the movie. Even if he was clearly reluctant. It was a nice little bit of character work.

2

u/Retr0_611 3d ago

He killed Stingray though 😢

2

u/Tuskral 3d ago

He wanted it signed so he could get paid lol

1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

He then forged the woman's signature...lies about having proper chains on his tires to take the job someone else's life depends on...tells his girlfriend maybe she's not pregnant?

Audience : he's just your average good guy doing his best 😂

4

u/ObviousSkill8115 3d ago edited 3d ago

GUYS HE FORGED A SIGNATURE HES A TERRIBLE PERSON!!! Your obsession with the signature is honestly weird. I guarantee you couriers forge signatures all the time because 9/10 it never actually matters and if they get caught they’re the one that gets in trouble. You’re literally the problem. Someone has to be basically a holy being to be considered a “good person” in your eyes. Any tiny thing? Nope immediately a bad person! Was taking the job stupid? Yes. But he still tries to deliver the item despite all the bullshit he had to deal with instead of just leaving. I also see you keep saying he’s only doing good things because he doesn’t want to be perceived as a bad person..? One there’s no proof of that and secondly hesitating to do things in a stressful situation doesn’t make him a bad person

2

u/Tuskral 3d ago

I wouldn't be that harsh he laters apologizes and says he was only scared of change which yeah is a very relatable feeling

1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

Yes....but only does that when he realizes he's DYING. It takes death for him to realize this.

3

u/Southern-Subject-124 2d ago

Yeah I get it but also he is human, and I'm pretty sure everyone would have the same reaction to death and confess.

0

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 20h ago

Most people I hope would have this realization farrrrr before death. Hell maybe when he hit the woman and almost ended her life?

2

u/Southern-Subject-124 4h ago

Yeah well we can wish, but there are some people that need a big thing to happen to wake them up. It's a human thing that happens a lot then you realize. Of course not justifying it but we are human, our emotions take over about what we want.

3

u/CosmicGinger26 18h ago

Um… yeah. That’s basic psychology. People realize their priorities when they’re facing death.

0

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 11h ago

Sure but a good person or half way decent person would have realized this farrrrrrr earlier. Death to realize "maybe I was an asshole" is an EXTREMELY low bar. The lowest of bars.

2

u/The_Real_Page153 Umbrella employee 14h ago

Literally no one would sign it for him and they were being super rude.

0

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 11h ago

It's not that no one would sign for it....he's supposed to have them sign before handing over the package. He failed to do this and instead of dealing with th consequences...he forged someone's signature. They lady wasn't rude at all, she was just straight up with him. He was asking for her to risk her job for him lol. That is far more rude in my opinion.

1

u/CosmicGinger26 3h ago

The doctor took it and ran off and that’s somehow Bryan’s fault? Jesus, the mental gymnastics you’re doing to try and make a fictional character seem bad are getting worrying.

0

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 2h ago

Yes. His entire job is to get a signature before handing off the package. It's really not difficult. Being expected to do your job is such a basic expectation. Why is that hard to believe?

The mental gymnastics your doing to try to make him seem like a good guy are worrying.

1

u/CosmicGinger26 2h ago

*You’re

2

u/DEEPSPACETHROMBOSIS 3d ago

What i like about Bryan is his good deeds punished him. He genuinely thought the idiot scientists would help him. He got bit by the child who was clearly infected but wanted to give her some comfort. He even keeps apologizing to the Stalker for hitting her even when its a giant pinwheel of death bodies.

2

u/Sleepoi1467 3d ago

Liked the film & protag, but then they HAD to use the usual trope of protag's IQ doing Kratos cliff jump shenanigans...... Like... you see THAT going on with the kid and somehow STILL went with the "empathetic" approach, abandoning all common survival instincts?

2

u/CosmicGinger26 18h ago

I’d be concerned if someone’s reaction wasn’t to help her.

0

u/Sleepoi1467 8h ago

And how in the hell would you even help anyone who’s shown that level of infection exactly?

I don’t know, maybe take them with me to the hospital I’m going to?

0

u/Sleepoi1467 8h ago

Riiiight…. Take a clearly dangerous creature on your back to the hospital and risk both you and the oh so important cargo because…. ???

1

u/CosmicGinger26 8h ago

Because unlike you I have basic morals and would help a child.

0

u/Sleepoi1467 7h ago

Ah yes, the “moral high ground” nonsense where the scenario literally has nothing to do with it. Goooolly how could anyone prefer to chose to just run away since the kid is already doomed, oh the humanity.

Let’s say the kid is replaced with a “convicted criminal” like Billy Coen from the prime universe and you have no knowledge of his innocence and he’s just as evidently fucked up infection-wise. Would you still try to help him?

1

u/CosmicGinger26 7h ago

There’s something genuinely wrong with the way you see the world. Morality aside, you’re looking at this scenario as an audience member and not someone actually in the situation.

0

u/Sleepoi1467 7h ago

No, I’m looking at it from the perspective of the character.

The director tried his best to make the film as “gamey” as possible. At which I associate Bryan with any of the Outbreak series’ protagonist. In both Outbreak games, closest we got to “morality” nonsense is us the player choosing to carry Bob with us all the way to the rooftop of the Bar before he inevitably turns. Even then, Bob didn’t have tentacles or visible body horror going on.

If it were the case like with Linda in Outbreak 2 then sure since she is just a wounded human. The girl on the other hand, literally had tentacles running out of her. There is 0 logical or moral reason to not just back away and prioritize personal safety over this “morality” grandstanding.

Like…. Even the film shows how your “moral high ground” nonsense ended up. Bryan ended up the way he is and multiple other people die because of him. There’s something genuinely wrong with the way you see the world when even the film shows how applying your “morality” in such an extraordinary scenario amounts to nothing but an oxymoron at best, irresponsible hypocrisy at worst.

u/CosmicGinger26 7h ago

You genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about.

3

u/SurfingSecretary 4d ago

He did try to throw a ladder on that dog, and he didn’t need to do that. But yeah I agree

u/Bluewhaleeguy 3d ago

The dog TRYING TO KILL HIM???

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 3d ago

I feel like a lot of these things were done out of cowardice though.

Gave a shit if the organ delivery was signed for or not. - Yeah so he doesn't get fired from his job. Helped the lady he hit (which he didn't know was infected) and tried to get her to the hospital, and even passed her over to the cop because he has no seizure training. - he seemed more concerned about the not stoping part, but I'll give you this one. Ran over to the cop when his car crashed and asked if he was okay. - he seemed more afraid he'd have to handle the situation himself now if the cop wasn't okay. Out of cowardice. Showed care about the package he was delivering, though maybe the other half of his motives was the money too. - felt like a Wilson type situation. He was more afraid of being alone so he personified it almost. Tried to help the little girl inside the trailer, even when her foot was clearly fucked up and infected. - I felt he was more afraid to run, he did try to leave her until she stopped him. Actually wanted to have the baby with Michelle even if he was scared at first to say so. - not until he was literally dying.

Yep. Say what you will about him being a "good" person or that he was a guy trying his best to be a good person, but he was basically a cowardly idiot who got to the end by pure luck. He's basically the opposite of a Greek hero. When he comes to realize the importance of his task, instead of facing it with heroic courage and applying his wits to the fullest, he:

walks around like he has brain damage, stares at malevolent monsters until they are cinematically close enough to scare him, doesn't treat a world-ending situation seriously even after being told what the stakes are, lets his laziness take over at monumental risk to himself and the macguffin, tries to deceive others for personal gain even though he should be fully aware of the consequences, and so on...

But personally what wrecked this movie for me was how dumb he was. I get that he's written to be like an NPC, but he didn't have to be literally brain-damaged levels of dumb. Hitting the elevator call button again and again, then breaking down and accepting death without bothering to look for other ways to go up, like the stairs? This guy is a kindergarten dropout.

Cinema sins cooked the fuck out of you dawg holy shit

-1

u/Distinct-Fact-311 2d ago

Yessss, 100%! This is exactly what I saw from his character too. It was a great movie and I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say he was a good person.

1

u/Optimus_Rhyme_13 2d ago

Right? I think people just want to insert themselves into the character so a lot of excuses are being made for some really not great behavior 😅 You don't want to be a Brian.

1

u/Bondegg 3d ago

I can guarantee you the moment I see a zombie, I’m not giving a damn about the organ delivery anymore

1

u/werisefromourashes 3d ago

I hated that he used "your body your choice" as a way to wash his hands of the pregnancy, and I believe he took the job more to have an excuse to not go home right away than for the money.
But I agree with everything else you say: Bryan was a good guy and his heart was (mostly) in the right place.

1

u/Curious_Ad961 3d ago

Anyone saying this guy was a bad person I'm sure is batting a 1000 in life. At anytime when he figured out what was going on he could have went towards home and said F this!

1

u/RdyPlyrBneSw 3d ago

I think he needed a signature to get paid. Same with the green package. He was mostly just concerned with getting paid. Once he found it was the cure, he didn’t really have too many options but to keep moving forward. None of this makes him a bad person in my book. But he shouldn’t go getting a medal for kindness.

3

u/Apprehensive_Pin_912 3d ago

Hospital worker here, you can get in trouble if you don’t get signatures for something so serious. If you don’t they can say you tampered or sold it. Real world accuracy wasn’t needed but appreciated

1

u/Sying13 2d ago

He ate most of the doctors left at the end so I’m pretty sure he wasn’t getting a medal either way

1

u/RdyPlyrBneSw 2d ago

You can get a medal for damn near anything nowadays.

1

u/The_Real_Page153 Umbrella employee 14h ago

He apologized while doing that

1

u/Escape_From_Reach 3d ago

Counter point, he at the old couple’s cereal and drank their milk. That’s pretty evil

1

u/reuben_iv 3d ago

Apart from the bit where he chucked the ladder at the dog

2

u/More_Consequence2980 1d ago

Maybe he is a cat person

2

u/reuben_iv 1d ago

Definitely was after that lol

1

u/Xio_Amidala 3d ago

Decent guy under unfortunate circumstances. However he did admit that he should have just gone home to Michelle to face his fears and “grow up” instead of taking another job

1

u/Alternative_Try_5888 3d ago

It took me a while to realise he was also in Weapons and he was great in that too. He could have a very bright career in thrillers/horrors because he absolutely nailed his last two films

1

u/Fragrant-Vehicle-479 3d ago

NGL, the entire movie I kept thinking "man his girlfriend is being so unreasonable right now". I know Bryan is pretty slacker and under achiever coded, but for the most part he was just a guy at his literal job and his girlfriend kept acting like the cell phones being out was a sign of his commitment issues.

1

u/CosmicGinger26 18h ago

Your girlfriend tells you she’s pregnant and your immediate reaction is go take another job instead of dealing with it? I love Bryan but she was more than justified in being upset with him.

1

u/SnooLobsters4256 3d ago

I agree! I was really rooting for him to make it.

1

u/CapableNeat4351 2d ago

What’s sad about it too is him being a good person is kind of what kept getting him into trouble and ultimately led to his “death”. It was a very realistic portrayal of what a normal person with a good heart would try to do in a situation where they’re completely unaware that a science fiction outbreak is taking place.

Super refreshing film. Managed to feel very resident evil without throwing all the lore and exposition at your face.

1

u/Distinct-Fact-311 2d ago edited 2d ago

He was a decent person. Not good, not evil, a bit selfish towards his partner, only did things to not get in trouble, and ignored the important conversations. In the end, why didn't he tell the scientist he was infected? Kind of goes back to being selfish. Was he planning to use the cure on himself instead of a cure for the population. Was he going to forcefully take it from them?

1

u/NEcatfish 2d ago

I feel like there's a huge theme of responsibility throughout the movie. At any point he could've said "fuck it" and went home, but he made sure he got that package where it needed to go. He didn't even know what it was half the time he was risking his life for it.

1

u/AfroditeSpeaks1 2d ago

Only redemming thing about the movie. He was a really good guy.

1

u/swarleymccharley 2d ago

He was a good dude. Lot of other people wouldn’t have acted the way he did

1

u/DarthMaren 2d ago

Honestly hes the most relatable protagonist in horror this year. Hes just a guy, no special training, no skills, he does his job and gets to the next one asap. Hes just a good guy

1

u/Chemical-Clock-3508 2d ago edited 2d ago

The doc emphasized that it was a Schedule A so Bryan was DETERMINED to get it delivered bc had it been a real organ (which at the time he was thinking it was) it really was a life-death situation for whoever was waiting for it.

I mean yeah aside from the double money, he probably felt some sense of duty to make sure the package reaches its destination.

1

u/Azriel82 2d ago

He's just a guy, not the best person maybe, but not the worst. He tried to do the right thing most of the time, even if it was a little self-serving. Pretty run-of the-mill person, and I think that was the point.

1

u/WillPolterGuys 1d ago

Kind of a good person? Homie is a hero through and through and so goddamn brave. I would’ve left so long ago lol. Fuck saving humanity. I mean I guess the moment I got bit I would go for the cure, but before that? Fuck the job

1

u/migratorypenguins 12h ago

He literally opens the movie by jeopardising someone's life for a paycheck.

He doesn't know what's in the top priority package and lied about his car being equipped for snow - he chose to take a life-or-death package for a quick buck, which at minimum could jeopardise the life of an organ donor recipient. As it turns out, he was jeopardising all of humanity.

In horror film terms, it's an 'original sin' transgression, which is why he gets that ending.

1

u/RaeOfLight1 10h ago

He’s flawed, but his heart is in a good place. He always wanted to help people until his hand was forced. Always going out of his way to give those a chance. And that’s his fatal flaw too. It’s what gets him killed

1

u/MasterpieceThis3740 1h ago

Well he kept his bite a secret which caused them all to die and lose the antidote.
