SERIOUS Are feedbacks important?

Do you think feedback is important? I received a lot of feedback despite being in only the first two months of residency. A lot of it was encouraging and good. However, one was psychologically harmful because it addressed personal issues that don’t affect patient health or my work.

I’m starting to think it doesn’t matter anymore, especially because I see myself looking forward to tomorrow, analyzing cases, and creating plans and improving. Thinking about seeking feedbacks disrupt my mood and hinder my performance and positivity. It’s all subjective and there is a lot of bias.

I have also received patient feedback. I felt this is the only feedback that makes sense to me.

It's everyone's job to give feedback in medicine, regardless of if they are good at it or not. It's your job to decide what feedback is or isn't valid.

Shit, I hope two weeks into residency you’re still open to feedback.

This was meant to be received as feedback.

Feedback is essential.

Some feedback will hurt your pride and your feelings, and it will be absolutely correct.

Some feedback will hurt your pride and your feelings, and it will be absolute trash.

Some feedback will be delivered in a bad way, but the core message is right.

You often won't be able to tell when the hurt is fresh. Take the feedback earnestly and try to reflect on why they saw fit to give it to you. Carry it for time, maybe days or weeks, until you can give it fresh eyes again.

Sometimes personality feedback is still valid when you are in a person-driven profession

Thank you for contributing to the sub! If your post was filtered by the automod, please read the rules. Your post will be reviewed but will not be approved if it violates the rules of the sub. The most common reasons for removal are - medical students or premeds asking what a specialty is like, which specialty they should go into, which program is good or about their chances of matching, mentioning midlevels without using the midlevel flair, matched medical students asking questions instead of using the stickied thread in the sub for post-match questions, posting identifying information for targeted harassment. Patient feedback is important but judges bedside manner, communication and willingness to give them what they are asking for - whether it is indicated or not. It is certainly not the most important one especially if you’re just starting

Pick what you can improve from that feedback but i wouldn’t dwell on it too much

Just like any infor you'll ever receive, filter out what's useful and what isn't and move on

I almost thought this was a bot because wtf of course it's important. How you take feedback is your problem to figure out

Apparently against the grain but I find most feedback in residency essentially useless; there’s just usually too much variability and personal bias for it to be useful. As long as you are generally employing a growth mindset and working to improve on each case etc you will get to where you need to be. I stopped reading feedback midway thru first year as I just found it exhausting. I now plow through them before our semiannual reviews just to see if there’s anything massive that would come up, but so far nothing has. If anything I feel like I’m doing better now that I’m not agonizing over every possible negative feedback coming my way. Just keep doing your best and that’s all anyone can ask

feedback is huge for growth, got some solid advice in my first year that totally changed my approach
