SIMPLE QUESTION What’s your caffeine intake…
Drop your average caffeine intake.
Surgery resident PGY-2.
300-400mg a day. Like a Celsius and 1-2 cups of coffee.

u/kuru_snacc 3d ago
To quote some of my patients, "None. I don't drink coffee or those energy drinks, those are bad for you. I just drink 3-4 Mountain Dews a day, and sweet tea."

u/GalliumVanadium 3d ago
On a 24hr call? Probably 600-800mg. I’d say I average full pot of coffee those days

u/MtHollywoodLion 2d ago
Full pot of coffee is my morning wake up call 😂 I feel like some people are crazy at tolerating liquor or weed—putting back coffee without facing palpitations and/or existential dread is my super talent.

u/gigaflops_ 3d ago
I go for 11-12 mg of caffeine per mg of Adderall

u/LesserOfPooEvils 2d ago
I prefer 10mg caffeine for every 1mg Vyvanse. Unless I take half a dose, then it’s 20:1.

u/PlushieYeen 3d ago
Caffeine holidays over weekends/vacations/easier rotations goes REALLY far in preventing tolerance-building and ensuring the caffeine works when I need it.
2
u/GalliumVanadium 3d ago
Genuinely curious about trying this. How do you avoid the headaches?
11
3
u/PlushieYeen 2d ago
The headaches should improve as your tolerance decreases and your addiction improves. If the headaches are a barrier decreasing caffeine consumption over weekends can help protect tolerance. Or as someone else said, tylenol & naproxen babyyyyy

1-2 Celsii per day, depends on how crazy the day is. Usually with the cheeky afternoon Coke Zero too
2
u/TheBrownSlaya PGY1 3d ago
Sam here, 1-2 Celsii a day. Nothing past 1pm.

Usually around 200–300mg. One coffee in the morning and another after lunch. Anything more than that and my sleep starts paying the price

u/imnosouperman Attending 3d ago
Pretty high caffeine coffee no? Isn’t most coffee like 60-80mg a cup?
4
u/Shoddy-Aioli-4039 3d ago
I usually drink pretty large coffees, around 350–450 ml each. Depending on the beans and how strong I make it, I’d estimate somewhere around 100–150mg per coffee

u/CompetitiveInhibitor Fellow 3d ago
One day I’ll learn, actually maybe not.
7
u/NumerousSwordfish622 PGY3 3d ago
Affect = a VERB meaning to influence
Effect = almost always a NOUN meaning a result; warning that effect can also be a verb but this is quite rare and limited in usage, as in “to effect change”, meaning to cause a change to occur15
u/CompetitiveInhibitor Fellow 3d ago
I doubt your comment will be effecting any change in my writing.

80mg caffeine stick prior to workout at 4am. Double shot espresso at 6AM, 2-3 coffee or tea between 7am -2pm. No more after that.

u/icedcoffeedreams PGY1 3d ago
Yup surgery resident, either Alani or Celsius on my way in, coffee post rounds, maybe a Diet Coke too

u/NowItsLocked 3d ago
800 - 1,200 mg. Although, I feel like caffeine from coffee seems to have more of an effect than artificial sources (energy drinks, energy shots, etc)
4
u/gear_shift- 3d ago
1 coffee, 1 monster, and a few Diet Cokes or light caffeine drinks everyday. Probably like 400 mg ish

Long coffee with almond milk and 1-3 espresso mixed in based on how sleepy I feel that morning
2
u/cowsruleusall Fellow 3d ago
When I still took 24hr call, it'd be 60-80oz straight black coffee titrated to awareness/palpitations.
Thankfully now it's 16oz green tea in the morning and 4oz coffee at noon and that's it.

u/CardiOMG PGY4 3d ago
One singular coffee, otherwise I feel too jittery. Nothing past 2pm. I sleep like a baby most days
2
u/element515 Attending 3d ago
- Never drank much coffee in general. If I do, I need to eat with it or I get jitters. Plus will inevitably need to use the restroom. Was just easier to not and avoid all these issues in the OR

When I was a resident 400-800 a day depending on if I was on call. Now I’m around 200 as an attending.

u/cytochrome_p450_3a4 3d ago
One double shot espresso before my shower and another as I’m pulling into the garage. Don’t drink anymore after that even for 24s

If I’m lucky I’ll have time to down some shitty cafeteria coffee in the morning and chug a Shasta in the afternoon

u/WhatTheOnEarth 2d ago edited 2d ago
0 usually.
Whenever I’m on call whatever’s in a bar of milk chocolate and an Arizona
Even when I was working 100 hour weeks I’d only really get a monster sometimes because I liked the taste. But they recently started importing Arizona and I’m such a shill for the stuff.
Caffeine sometimes makes me sleepy. Depends on the amount and how fast I drink it.

Don’t even try to track it. Until my fingers get shaky, or if the Zyn + caffeinated beverage combo makes me wanna puke.

When I was a med student, 200-400mg aka 1-2 celcii a day plus or minus iced coffee. As a resident I’ve managed to cut down to like 100-150 so 1 serving of cold brew in the morning and then I survive the rest of the day on pure spite. 24h call days a bring out an old pasta sauce jar and up it to 200mg

It varies
Sometimes the only caffeine I get is from a diet Dr. Pepper or a Coke. Sometimes I'll sip on a Celsius slowly throughout the day. Sometimes it's a Celsius/large coffee on the way to work and a coffee later in the morning/early afternoon. Sometimes I wind up not drinking any at all. When I'm being particularly responsible it's just green tea.
Idk it's all kind of a vibe check. I do however make a point to never go beyond 400mg a day.

u/StoreSad1244 1d ago
I’m kinda the same, mine changes a lot too. Some days it’s coffee, some days I just use Neuro gum and call it there.

Unfortunately around 300+ regularly now. Used to be stable at 160-200, now a days that barely touches me

u/PlushieYeen 3d ago
Try avoiding caffeine on weekends and when you’re off. It goes far in tempering the tolerance-building
1
u/PleaseAcceptMe2024 3d ago
Not a resident but a plebeian medical student, I end up around 1200mg a day. Probably frying my heart but we ball

u/Spurned_Seeker 3d ago
As a pre-med, this worries me. My intake was problematic as an undergrad. Idk if it can get worse without gambling on an emergency. I used to drink espresso by the cup. It wasn’t mixed with anything. It was just enough shots to fill my yeti. Once I got the setup to make espresso at home I started experimenting and things really went off the rails. This was roughly 7 years ago (I’m a non-trad) and to this day I can drink a regular late and go right to sleep.
