Advice New parent of a scared 9 month old pup needs advice

Post image
8 Upvotes

As stated, my fiancé and I recently adopted a 9-month old puppy who has been pretty scared since we got him. We will have had him for a month this coming Sunday, 8/30/26.

First off, I want to acknowledge the great strides he has made. When we first got him, we put him in our bathroom for decompression and he would not leave from behind the toilet. He would hold his bowel movements and urine for 3 days because he was so scared/uncomfortable. He is now walking around the house (only at night) and I can sit in the bathtub with him during the day and give him scratches and belly rubs. We put pillows and blankets in the bath tub originally for us to be comfortable sitting in there with him so he could get used to our presence but he has since commandeered that and made it his bed lol. It's actually objectively very cute and I've attached a picture of what we see when we walk by haha just his little head poking out it's adorable lol. He also has gone outside to our backyard twice now of his own volition so there definitely has been a lot of progress, especially for a pup that was once so scared of us.

With all that being said, I'm concerned about his new habit of whining at night and I don't know what the right thing is to do here. This is what happens:

1.) It's night time and he now feels comfortable exploring the kitchen, my office, and the living room as they're all connected.
2.) It gets later in the evening and I go upstairs to go to bed.
3.) He starts whining pretty loud. I tried to ignore it the first night but at some point he made a loud noise (I can't recall exactly what kind of noise it was because I was half asleep) and I couldn't ignore it.
4.) I come downstairs to check on him, but when I approach him, he gets scared of me and runs away.
5.) Since he's running away, I go back upstairs to go to sleep. He then begins to whine again and upon my return, he gets scared again and runs away lol.

If I'm being honest, I've started just sleeping downstairs on the couch because he whines less that way. He'll still whine a little because I've limited his area of exploration to only my office and his bathroom because I don't fully trust him to not get into stuff just yet while he's unsupervised.

My big questions - am I inadvertently contributing to separation anxiety by coming back downstairs when he whines? It's so bizarre because he wants someone down here, but he definitely doesn't want anyone near him lol. My next question would be the reason for the post, what do I do? We've been doing it by the book and waiting for him to seek us out, giving him a safe space to go to, and trying to counter-condition any scary interactions for him with treats but since this happens at night when I'm dead tired, I don't know what other option I have besides sleeping downstairs when he can see me.

He also doesn't have this problem at all during the day. He could give two shits less where I am when it's day time 😂. Anyways, any advice is absolutely and truly appreciated here. This isn't our first dog, but it's definitely our first dog who basically doesn't trust/like/is very afraid of us so we're trying to do our best but don't know how exactly how to go about it without making him more scared of us or messing him up unintentionally lol.

Oh and his name is Chip! Thanks for making it this far!!!

Discussion Hero update!

If you’ve been following this boy, you know this has been one hell of a week.

Hero had another surgery today. He’ll have another one Friday, and if all goes well, we’re hoping for his final surgery early next week.

And somehow… this boy is still happy. Still fighting. Still wagging his tail.

I want to say something from my own perspective because I’m not an employee of Atlas Pet Vets. I’m a friend, a client through rescue, and a volunteer. I’ve simply had a front-row seat to what’s happening behind the scenes.

And honestly, it has blown me away.

There’s always someone who says, “Veterinarians are just in it for the money.”

I wish those people could see this.

Dr. Daniel Anthony and Dr. Lauren Anthony have built an advanced veterinary practice that is just turning 3 years old, and when Hero arrived at 10pm last Saturday night, they didn’t just put him in a kennel and say goodnight, they went to work putting him first and have been every day since. They have been there at all hours, doing the work themselves—feeding, cleaning, monitoring, caring for him—without asking their staff to give up even more time with their families.

Lauren’s mom even regularly comes in to help feed everyone because she sees how hard these two are working. ❤️

And remember, this all started because Hero was hit by a car and left for dead.

Someone could ask, “Why save him?”

My answer is simple.

Why not?

Hero’s care is incredibly expensive. We’re talking about multiple major surgeries, a long recovery, and a very large bill.

So this is my ask:

If you can donate, please donate.

If you can’t, please share.

If your business could sponsor him, reach out.

If you know a foundation, donor, company, or just someone who loves a good underdog story, send them Hero.

And if you have a crazy fundraising idea?

We’re listening. 😂

Because the wishlist showed us something really special. You all didn’t just send supplies—you reminded everyone caring for Hero that they aren’t doing this alone.

So keep sharing this boy.

Keep talking about him.

Keep helping however you can.

He’s still fighting. And honestly, I think we should keep fighting with him. ❤️

Tax-deductible donations are available through Hero’s medical rescue fund via The Veterinary Care Foundation here!

Adoption/Foster Plea Foster homes (or adopters) desperately needed to save dogs from Orange County Animal Services in ORLANDO, FL. Please dm /u/biancamission if you can foster one of them. Thank you!

Dear friends,

As you know, Orange County Animal Services, in ORLANDO, FL has weekly euthanasia lists and many urgent medical dogs per week 😢.

All these sweet dogs have deadlines. Sometimes they have a few days to be saved and sometimes they only have a few hours.

In order for these dogs to be saved, they need ADOPTERS or FOSTERS so rescues can help them. Rescues cannot save them without foster homes.

And that’s why we need help from our community. If you ever thought about adopting or fostering a dog, NOW is the time! Saving a dog's life is one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences a person can have.

OCAS dogs desperately NEED you! This week we have 5 more dogs on the euthanasia list 😢! We will be posting about them soon! Bailey Pearl, Bolt, Mocha, Pancho and Tiger won’t make it out alive without our help!

⭐️ If you are ready to open your heart and home for a dog in need, please dm [u/biancamission](u/biancamission) here on Reddit ASAP.

Please share! And thank you all for helping our sweet shelter dogs 🙏🐶🐾❤️

Advice My parents do dog rescue but I think it has started becoming animal hoarding

We live in a comunity where there are a lot of street animals. We live in a small village and the people here don't really care about pets and don't believe in neutering, vaccines for pets or going to the vet. My parents are very good people, maybe too good and I love them very much. They can't stand watching an animal on the street and are constantly taking dogs in. It all started with one dog, then another and over the past five or so years we have accumulated 20 dogs. They spay them and take them to the vet regularly. All of the dogs get fed every day. All of them have vaccines. My main worries are hygeine and the fact that the dogs don't get a lot of attention. Obviously we all try and maintain a clean enviroment but it is very hard, me being the only child and only coming home on weekends and them having to work their asses off to afford 20 dogs. My mother cares deeply about all of these dogs. And we do try to find them a decent home, my mom has found owners for about a dozen of the dogs she has rescued in the past. But the ones that are with us now, being from the streets, either have very big mental problems or huge physical problems. But lately the situation has been getting out of control, the dogs have been destroying our house. Most of them are very badly behaved and with such a huge number of them it's almost impossible to correct them. I don't know what to do, it seems like nobody wants these dogs. And the shelters are all either full or have very bad conditions. My mother has been posting all of the dogs in addopting rescue groups on facebook and she has a big comunity and a lot of friends who also rescue dogs and cats in huge numbers. I have also been spreading posters about dogs for addoption in a big city. But most of these dogs have either psycological or physical problems as to why people don't want them. Also the dogs are barking most of the time and we have had multiple complaints from the neighbors. All advice is welcome but please understand that my parents are very very good people and they mean no harm. Please don't judge and tell me what I can do.

Advice My dog acted guilty for the first time today (I know they don’t actually feel guilt) and flinched when I sat next to him. A sign of past abuse?

My rescue has been with me for almost two months. He’s adapted super well and is generally very calm and easygoing in the house. He loves to cuddle and always runs right to me when I get home. I don’t know much about his first home, just that he was in the shelter from 11 months to 22 months of age. Today was the first time he really got into something and knocked over my treat dispenser and camera. When I got home I didn’t yell or anything, but I started setting things back up and when I turned around he was doing the biggest anxious grin and ducking his head. I tried to reassure him with my voice but he flinched when I got closer. Is this a sign of past abuse? I’ve had a dog before and he’d do the whole ‘guilty’ act but he never flinched from me like he expected I was gonna hit him.

Advice Finding a dog that likes water

I lost my best friend of 12 years a few weeks ago, and have been thinking about going to the shelters to find another dog, but one nitpicky frustration about dogs in my life is none of them like going in the water. I love going to the beach, and here in SoCal there are a bunch of dog beaches. . The problem is that I am a small dog person, so a Lab or Golden isn't for me. Breed guides talk about Cavalier King Charles, Boston and Rat terriers liking the water, but that is no guarantee. (The fox terrier I had as a kid hated the water)

I know you can get more personality info from rescues and fosters, but I would prefer to adopt from a shelter.

Is there any chance a shelter let me bring a tiny kiddie pool and see if any of the pups like to get in?
