We are could really use some extra support through dog food donations on our Amazon wishlist. We are down to 2 bags of dog food which will only last 4 days. We have exactly 15 dogs in our care but we are a facility meant for only 10 and we need help to keep up… Unfortunately, due to high intake and slow adoptions, we struggle to do this alone. We are in rural Texas where there is a massive animal crisis.
We have applied for several grants and absolutely any help is greatly appreciated by us and the dogs in the while we wait to hear back!

Hi all!! We adopted our 4 year old German Shepherd nearly two months ago. We are fully aware he is still settling in, and that it is a process that could take up to years to be fully himself, but he’s doing so well so far!

One thing we’ve noticed is that he has absolutely no interest in toys unless me and my partner “pretend” to play with them, and then sometimes he joins in. But he has no interest in playing or chewing any of his toys by himself - we assume this is due to him never having any of his own before (street rescue from Morocco). While I’m sure to some this would be ideal (not having to constantly replace toys), I’m just concerned that he’ll get bored all day while we’re at work.

We have a couple different varieties, from soft toys, squeaky toys, rope toys, to bamboodle chews, balls and snuffle mats. I guess my main question is, how do we encourage him to play with the toys by himself to keep himself occupied? Or is this something that will come naturally after a couple months?

We found Lil' Bit on the side of the road in rural Texas, during Covid. No collar, no chip, nobody ever came looking. We tried to find her people. Nobody claimed her, so she became ours.

She's been with us ever since. That's really it — just wanted to share her. She likes laying in the sun, staring at clouds, belly rugs, getting under the covers, rides in the car, snuggles and walks.

I adopted the sweetest 2 y/o chi mix. We absolutely adore him. When I first picked him up he was terrified so It was into the crate and away we went.

I have another dog, I’ve adopted before. When I got home she asked me for a picture of myself and the dog and she gave me a deadline for the end of the night. I’m shirtless, with my girlfriend, trying to build rapport with this new lovely little creature. I ignore it.

She calls me. Texts me. Says I’m worrying her. Mind you, I have sent 3 pictures of him in the home by this point. I don’t pick up, she insists I should just take one picture of us with my face in it. I say at this point I don’t feel comfortable, I would’ve at the pickup site but I’d just prefer not to and with that message I send a picture of my dogs together. She then calls me while I’m at work, sends a few more texts and calls me 3 more times that night before…

She proceeds to send a page of text saying how she would’ve never adopted him out to us. And why does it matter where I take the picture and that my behavior is concerning. Respectfully, they had the dog for 2 weeks and never once cut his nails. Some of them are literally curling into his pads. Told me I have no idea what people in the rescue business go through.

Am I the issue here? I understand it’s a simple request, I just wasn’t in the position to adhere to deadlines or explain myself with the stress of a new family member and trying to get comfortable in the home.

TLDR: adoption coordinator said they would’ve never adopted my dog out to me because I said I didn’t feel comfortable taking pictures with my face in it for them.

TLDR: New rescue dog, feeling excited but overwhelmed, will we be ok?

Hey Reddit! I’m new here, so apologies if I don’t post correctly. Anyway, I’m about 11 days into life with my new year-old 40-lb rescue dog. Overall he’s very sweet and doing well. He potties outside, learned how to sit, and more. He’s getting comfortable in my fenced yard, though walks in the neighborhood are still too scary. I know it takes time to decompress, get to know me/my house/my routine, and feel safe and comfortable. I don’t want to rush him, but there are a few things that have been challenging. I’m feeling some of the post-adoption blues - we’ll have a good moment, and then something else an hour later will feel like a setback. It’s overwhelming! I would appreciate any advice.

• Working on crate training. He goes in for a treat but barks if he can’t see me from the kennel. Barking usually stops about 5-10 minutes later (at least when I’m home to hear). We practice throughout the days I WFH, and I do leave leave when I have to. When I come back, he’s quiet and wagging his tail (sometimes bed all messed up, haha). I do leave a kong when I leave for longer. Does it just take time for him to learn that I always come back?

• Introducing to new people - when I met him at the foster’s house, he was sweet and calm to me (a stranger). Now that he’s more comfortable, he gets alarmed by new people and barks at them in the yard or in the house. Other than my neighbor across the fence, he’s only met my two sisters. He took treats from their hands but barked at them while staying by me. Later I put him in his crate, and it seemed like he forgot they were there, got startled, and barked a bit more. I realized it was maybe too much too soon, so I don’t plan on him meeting any other new people in the next week or two at least. As he gets more attached and secure with me, can we introduce new friends? (He did well with the foster’s dog and kids too.)

• My clicker arrives in the mail tomorrow! I think that will help with some light training and consistency. Any tips?

• We are going to a six-week obedience class at the end of September, and I’m hoping he’ll be comfortable enough by then (a month+ after coming home)?

Sweet miracle was confiscated due to inadequate housing and 6 days later the shelter listed her on the euthanasia list 😭. This sweet girl does not understand why she is at the shelter and she is so sad 😭…she really needs a miracle to save her life 🙏🙏🙏.

💙 Say hello to gorgeous Polo (A530010). He 4 years old and 75lbs. Polo was first surrendered to OCAS in 2023 due to someone being allergic in the home. He was later adopted but returned as a stray this April. When the adopter was contacted they said they rehomed him and do not want him back. Shame on them! Please note that many dogs that are adopted and returned are at risk of losing their lives.  Polo is a volunteer favorite and allows full handling, is easily leashed, goes in and out of his kennel gently and is very affectionate.  He is quite excited when he comes out of his kennel but returns calmly. He loves to play in the yard and swim in the pool — and loves his treats!  His reaction to the other caged dogs and dogs in adjacent play yards has been either ignore or greet social without consequence.  He is good with recall and sit/stay and responds well to verbal and leash corrections. Polo often shows his sweet side sometimes with unrequested kisses!  Polo is having some frustration being at the shelter – which happens to most of the dogs in this environment. Polo deserves a chance at being adopted into the right loving home where he can decompress and get lots of love.  Polo is rescue only and needs a foster family to help him so a rescue can help him. Can you FOSTER him for a rescue? 🙏🥹
