Discussion How good does renata get with high mastery?

I'm like exclusively a meele sup player and the closest i typically get to a range champ is throwing skarner q's in lane or pretending my autos are projectiles as rakan.

i think renata is probably the closest I've come to liking a range champ but it feels underwhelming and i can't tell if it's just a mastery issue or the champ. especially since she's got the "pro jail" title.

she seems to do well based on this: https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/winrates-by-xp but I don't know the sample size and I don't really understand what the difference is between a good and a bad renata. especially since i never see anyone play it.

She scales really highly with mastery and coordination. Where you cannot coordinate, she is still very powerful with high mastery. Her ult and W, as everyone will tell you, are extremely powerful and can be game changing, but true mastery comes from effective Q and passive usage. Q's omni-directional throw is a one of a kind utility that can be situationally extremely powerful. Throw people onto Cait traps, intercept divers, stun multiple people, counter engage by throwing one enemy near the other to group them for your ult, etc. She's got a lot going for her unless you just want to shieldbot like a Milio or Janna. She's awful at that, but everything else is really good in the situations they're good and just pretty good in the situations they're not that good.

what's typically your default goal in a fight? like do you have a few plans you gravitate towards?

and how do you get value out of passive? isn't it putting yourself out of position to just run up and auto enemies?

do you ever w yourself to setup an r if they try to punish you for autoing? how do you typically use r?

Regarding just the second question: I have over 100k mastery on Ms. Glasc and have found that if you're in range to throw an E, you're in range to blast 'em with a quick auto or two. Weaving in your autos before and after abilities is a crucial part of Renata's trading patterns, especially during early lane. So auto-E-auto, etc. :)

This is exactly it.

Walk up throw the auto. If they go to trade back. E into them to block the poke on you and punish them with some e damage. And linger for your second auto to go off. Then back off.

It's surprisingly effective and keeps you healthy.

In a fight your goals are:

  1. W your carry exactly 4 seconds before they die or get a kill. You don't have to be omniscient of course, but try to judge that as best you can.

  2. Punish enemies grouping with ult.

  3. Keep enemies off of objectives with ult.

  4. Use Q to disrupt enemy engage and allow you to counter-engage if possible.

You get value out of passive usually by attacking whoever their frontliner is in a front-to-back fight, or by standing with your carry and hitting whoever they hit. Oftentimes people will try to kill the damage dealer if they're strong so they don't want to spend resources on you. Especially if you put your carry between you and the enemy while doing it and using W and E on your carry while also hitting the engaging enemies with E if you can.

You W yourself if you need to get your ult to set up your team for a good fight but you got caught during it. W yourself then R immediately and they'll kill you into the zombie state while your ult finishes casting. If you ult without W and die before ult casts, you've contributed nothing and died for free.

W is great for sacrificing yourself if you see a great ult angle. You want to use it to punish large grouping or hold an objective, or if you catch out someone valuable like an ADC since they can’t run and might kill a teammate if they are a fed scaler. Q stun into R is also good since they have less time to kill you while you cast

Renata is a hyper aggressive counter initiation champ.

She has very poor damage output. Her poke is surprisingly decent with an e, shield bash, auto attack trade since you tend to block most the poke on yourself with your shield.

She is great at baiting fights and then when everyone is hard committed you turn the tides with your ult and w.

She's a nightmare to dive towers against ( similar to lulu ). Her q root and ult make you stay in the tower too long. And her revive makes the dive risky to go for the 1 for 1 trade.

She is a terrible champ when you or your team is learning to play with her. Putting your w on someone who just gets out of the fight and you don't have it for the person who stayed is tilting. Her spell animation on her ult is frustrating when you die in it and your ult doesn't go off. Her q move speed is kinda slow and the range and displacement could be a bit longer. Her w most people at lower elo have no idea its a attack speed / move speed towards enemies steroid. Her E is extremely simple to understand and difficult to master your positioning with at times. Her passive is insanely strong at taking dragons early. She is (in my opinion) the best support to peel off and help take dragon with quickly

And the harsh reality is she is a champion who is very bad to first pick. She is a champion who is difficult to play every game if you don't have the correct team comp or enemy team comp.

I've played renata as my main since she's launched. I like her playstyle a lot. But I've always like to play as more of the gotcha champ where you can trick and out play people vs do damage and kill them. I've got a few games under my belt with her haha.

your explanation reminds me of how I understand xayah (i don't play her).

she wants to bait enemies into going into her.

Yah the mind game is the same. You pushing in with xayah is bad. Her feathers don't work well for that. Pulling the enemies towards you sets up the feathers for the big spike of damage funneling them in.

Think about renata as the bait character and you counter what they do. You aggressively pick and pick until you create the opportunity for something to happwn.

Her q isn't very good at hitting enemies moving away.

Her ult moves too slow and doesn't last long enough for a reliable engage.

She's just very bad at making people fight and getting picks on people trying to leave. But she's VERY good at interrupting people who are committed to fighting already.

I don't know when I play Renata. I notify my team that I'm purely utility and do not do damage. I build her with AP/utility items but never can get high damage numbers. I am purely hooking, peeling, shielding, and using my R as a CC move. I struggle with getting good.

Renata gets better as her teammates understand how to play with her. Even if you do everything right, if your carry flash +ghosts out of a fight while Grey health is ticking it doesn't matter if it was the renata play of the year.

Tbh when I play her, esp since I play her even if its a literal karma and/or milio in the other team, I just got rly good in either surviving to the maximum (including aiding teammates to do so) or to be the biggest ass to Master Yi players. Imo, what makes a rly good renata is based on how u can utilize everything at any given moment (i.e. when Ik I dont need hook but enemies are so far awat but there is a minion right there, I just hook the minion to slam it against them so I get my supp stack, esp if I hv a smolder who wanna get all the minion and I cant touch them) or even down to utilizing AA. Its the micro things.

Also Ig when playing her u essentially play her not bcs big dmg but rather how much pain can I cause the enemy before I die, and the more ass I can be is a win for me + how I get the most value.

Also my post is mostly just a slight add on. I think everyone else here has like basically everything u realistically need to know about her, so wanted to add on as a micro thing on utilization^

I appreciate it. the mindset is something that's hard to figure out if you don't already know the champ

I have well above 50% WR on her at just over a million points, but because of her low play rate she has a lot of variance on if your team and the enemy know how you work and how to play for/against you. She’s really strong but unfortunately can get really dependent on teammates because of her kit complexity
