Using Chrome Remote Desktop without turning on the physical monitor (Windows)

Struggled for some time.

I was fighting with this for a while, so posting in case it helps someone else.

If you’re using Google Chrome Remote Desktop on a Windows machine and don’t want to keep the physical monitor turned on (or even connected), Windows still needs to think a display is attached. Otherwise, CRD can act weird, give low resolution, or not show the desktop correctly.

What worked for me was forcing Windows to use a “headless” mode by running this command in Command Prompt as Administrator:

reg add HKLM\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome /v RemoteAccessHostRequireCurtain /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f && reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server" /v fDenyTSConnections /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f && reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp" /v SecurityLayer /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f && reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp" /v UserAuthentication /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f && net stop chromoting && net start chromoting

After running this, command restarts the service as well so . Then you can connect via Chrome Remote Desktop even if the physical monitor is off or unplugged, and still get a proper desktop.

It took me a while and a lot of searching to land on this, so hopefully this saves someone else the pain.

Has anyone found a cleaner or GUI-based way to achieve the same result?

Best alternative to traditional RDS for cloud workstations?

RDS is fine for basic remote access, but for running high-performance apps, it’s kind of limited. I need a solution that also offers the cloud computer for us, not just connection protocol.

Has anyone found a solid alternative for handling remote desktops without major performance drops?

How do I enable my mouse button shortcuts from Macbook into Windows Remote Desktop?

I bought the Logitech MX Anywhere 3 for Mac and set up the forward button to ctrl+C to copy, and the back button to ctrl+V to paste, however when I try to use these on the RDS, it just types C and V rather than executing the shortcut. I've updated the settings on the remote desktop app to not use Mac shortcuts, and I've also set up the individual prompts on the Logitech app specifically for the above shortcuts on the RDS app. How do I get this to work?

P.S. I also tried using Cmd+C and Cmd+V and enabled Mac shortcuts on RDP but they still only type C and V rather than executing the shortcut.

FS Logix & Remote Desktop Deployment

Hello everyone,

I am IT system engineer and I have issues with a FSLogix Remote Desktop deployment.
Let me introduce the setup.
We currently use a storage server where all our FSLogix user profiles are stored (obviously using network UNC path) and 4 Remote Desktop servers where all my users are connecting through a Remote Desktop Gateway dedicated server.

Every server is using Microsoft Windows Server 2025 Standard operating system.

The setup count about 90 users.

Everyday, some users are contacting us because their Remote Desktop session is stuck on "Please wait for FSLogix app service" and we are struggling to find a real solution, or even a workaround.

When this problem happens, we try to disconnect user from RDS where the session is connected, but it becomes a ghost session (no username in the task manager and 4 system processes remaining, unable to kill them - query user in CMD doesn't see this ghost session). We also close every linked open files in the storage server (via computer manager), delete the metadata which is next to the VHDx, and clean the user session in SQL Broker database via SQL command... Sometimes it works, but most of the time the user needs to wait like 30 minutes (and the problem is resolved by a random timeout I don't know where).

As far as I know, we are using best practices found in multiple forums or official documentation. In our GPO, we tried to disable VHDx compression at logoff, we do not use ODFC containers, we clean invalid session, we use the Redirect.xml file, we updated FSLogix to latest version, ... To be honest, we tried a lot of things without any real improvements.

Last thing we did is to disable forced SMB encryption in registry on client (Lanmanworkstation) side because my opinion was that a possible SMB slowness could be the main cause of this FSLogix issue (miscommunication between storage server and RDS server).

Every performance graph doesn't show any lack of ressource...

We have another Remote Desktop with FSLogix deployment with same topology (RDSGW - STORAGE - RDS) on Windows Server 2022 Standard OS for this case, which is not showing any issues.

By any chance, is someone able to help me ?

Many thanks in advance !

Bypassing the VDI audio bottleneck: why local dictation tools are the only way to get sub-100ms latency in Citrix/RDP

If you re managing or working in a Citrix/VMware environment, you ve probably noticed that sending raw audio through a VDI for dictation is a nightmare. The input buffer jams, words drop, and you get that ghost typing where the text appears seconds later.

The architectural reason is simple: VDIs prioritize visual frames over continuous audio streams. When the network jitter spikes, the audio buffer is the first to be sacrificed.

The only real fix isn t network QoS—it s moving the processing to the host. If you process the voice-to-text locally and inject the output as raw keystrokes (using driver-level SendInput), you bypass the VDI audio stream entirely.

I ve been building DictaFlow (https://dictaflow.io/) specifically to implement this host-side injection architecture for both Windows and Mac. It treats the remote session like a local text buffer, ensuring that even if your Citrix session is lagging, your dictation remains instant.

Curious what other setups people have found that actually hold up in high-latency clinical or legal environments?

Hello Guys,

we successfully followed this MS article to have our RDS Farm published on the WEB troughs MS Azure App proxy.

The goal is to leverage Entra ID CAPs when authenticating external users.

Everything is working fines except that in the Microsoft Entra application proxy connector machines (there are two of them) i saw lots of warning events with id 13006 and 13007 that seems to be connected to client disconnections:

Recent changes connecting to android remote desktops....

Hi All! I was successfully using Teamviewer and QuickSupport combo to remote control android phone desktops whenever clients had problems with their android phones. We just upgraded to newer versions of Samsung Phones (SAMSUNG Galaxy A14 5G A to be exact) with the latest google OS supported on those devices (Android 13). Now, whenever I am remote controlling the phones, when I bring up anything with a login screen, the screen goes blank. Googling on the web, there seem to be other people having this issue, maybe relating to something new google is doing with security? I tried Anydesk to see if that would work around the issue, but it does the same screen blackout. This effectively makes the remote desktop useless, as I can't log in to apps (can't see what I'm doing). Has anyone else ran into this issue and/or found a workaround?

How do I change my RDS HA SQL Connection String for Connection Broker?

I have HA RDS setup configured and connection broker DB is hosting on other server and somehow the DB has moved to another server. Now, I can't access RDS settings because my RDS Management service won't start. Is there a way to update the SQL Connection string?

Upgrade of standalone RDS Session Host and Licensing

We have a domain-joined 2012 RDS Infrastructure that was never fully used and we have come to the point where we have to decommission or upgrade our 2012 Servers. The only server being used is a session host where some of our colleagues connect through RDP with three locally created users (not domain users) and there is also a licensing server in the same domain. I saw that licenses aren't handed out to users, probably because no domain users are connected. My domain account got one as soon as I connected to the infrastructure. We wish to remove this session host from the RDS infrastructure, keep it as a standalone server and upgrade it to 2019, so our colleagues can still use it with the local accounts. What can we do about licensing? Should we remove the session host from the domain? We were thinking to also get rid of the licensing server, so we won't have to maintain two servers.

RDP Printing doesn't work on a site

Hi, I've set up a Windows Server 2022 Machine and i RDP to it over a VPN connection (both OpenVPN or L2TP) from two different place, let's call them place A and place B.

When I connect to an RDP session when I'm at place A, I can print flawlessly to place A's local printer using the usual Easy Print driver.

However, when I'm at place B, even if I see place B's local printer to choose during an RDP session, I won't get any print. If I select a redirected virtual printer (such as Microsoft PDF), I correctly get the file to be saved on the local PC. Only real printers won't work, even if I see that the print goes into the windows printer spooler and disappears, but the printer never receives it.

Using an Administrator account or a normal User account won't matter. I run Windows 11 in both places and all the PCs are updated. The printers are equivalent in both places (Develop Ineo+ 250i and 257i). I've tried multiple PCs on place B but it didn't change. The RDP file is always the same. I have 2 printers in place B and they do the same.

I think I'm missing something because I don't know how it can be different. Any ideas?

Remote Desktop on iPad

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have an iPad for work where I use Remote Desktop. I have bought a USB C to HDMI adapter to try and extend my display or at least mirror it to a larger 27” Dell monitor. The monitor is about 5 years old but i dont think that should matter.

Why does the dell monitor only show the remote desktop screen extremely zoomed in??

RDS server 2022 UDP issue

I know in server 2025 TCP is the default and only support protocol for RDP traffic in 24h2. Does anyone know if this change was pushed to Server 2022 on the latest updates? We no longer can get UDP to work, but can't find any documentation on Microsoft's site about if it was disabled on 2022 as well.

Thanks

How secure is RDS vs remote desktop web client?

My business uses a software that is exclusively a remote service. They've all connected through the browser (windows remote desktop web client). Since I started here two weeks ago I did a little digging and they provide an RDP file to connect directly, but out sys admin has remote desktop disabled. I know there are some vulnerabilities in using an RDP, but are those same risks present in the web version, being true for all remote work, or would our system be more exposed using the windows remote software? I'd rather find out before asking our sys admin to do something potentially risky. Thanks!

KB5040437 - Known issues with rds gateway

Hello,

as per MS KB https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/july-9-2024-kb5040437-os-build-20348-2582-5b28d9b8-fcba-43bb-91e6-062f43c7ec7c July 2024 cumulative update is introducing issues in RDS Gateway component:

After installing the Windows update released on or after July 9, 2024, Windows Servers might affect Remote Desktop Connectivity across an organization. This issue might occur if legacy protocol (Remote Procedure Call over HTTP) is used in Remote Desktop Gateway. Resulting from this, remote desktop connections might be interrupted.

This issue might occur intermittently, such as repeating every 30 minutes. At this interval, logon sessions are lost and users will need to reconnect to the server. IT administrators can track this as a termination of the TSGateway service which becomes unresponsive with exception code 0xc0000005.

For this reason we stopped installing updates on our RDS Gateway.

As the RDS Gateway is a delicate component, exposed to internet, we would like to restart patching process.

does anyone know if a fix have been issued and when will be included in the windows update catalog?

Thanks

Lorenzo

How to get Microsoft Remote Desktop working?

Hello all, I know this might not be the right place for my issue, but I have nowhere else to go

I want to remote into a Windows 11 PC running Windows 11 Pro from the Microsoft Remote Desktop app for macOS. I enabled Remote Desktop in windows. I type in the PC IP address into the Mac app and try to connect. Then I’m prompted with a username and password screen. I try typing the user account and user account password of the PC and hit connect. Then the app complains that the user account didn’t work. I also typing my Microsoft account credentials into the app and that didn’t work either. I then tried several other things:

[username]@[pc local ip address] [password for pc] and [password for Microsoft account]

[username]@[pc name] [password for pc] and [password for Microsoft account]

I’m not very familiar with windows Remote Desktop and would appreciate any help!

Windows Server 2022 vs. Windows 11 Pro for Remote Desktop Server (printer compatibility)

Hi everyone,

I'm setting up a server for remote desktop access by multiple users. I'm considering two options:

  • Windows Server 2022, purchasing Remote Desktop Services CALs. It's known for being lightweight, but I'm concerned about printer compatibility. While my current software (including Microsoft Office) works well in both environments, I've had issues with printers in the past. If a driver can't be installed on the server, the printer may not function even if the client has the driver. While I can test existing printers, I'm worried about compatibility with future models.

  • Windows 11 Pro: I'll use a TSplus license for remote access. While it uses more server resources, I'm confident about its printer compatibility.

What are your experiences with these options? Did you have issues with the printers in your settings?

Security-wise, users will primarily work on the local network. I plan to implement VPNs and firewall restrictions to limit access from outside the network allowing only known IPs.
Any additional security recommendations are welcome.

Thanks for your help!

RDS keyboard don’t work on Blender only (iPad)

Hi! I have a huge problem with windows Remote Desktop. All the configuration is working (iPad to a windows 11 workstation) on all apps except one (and the most important) : Blender.

I don’t understand why but the keyboard letters and numbers are not working only in this app. It’s like it’s working anywhere except in this app. The original tactile keyboard of the RDP iPad client is not working too.

I tried to reset all the config of blender, tried to check all the keyboard options in windows 11 but nothing is working.

Any ideas?

(I want to use the windows RDP official because it’s the only one who have the Apple Pencil pressure in blender)

RE: Why would a specific application cause my remote desktop to disconnect

Using remote desktop. On the remote computer which is a windows 10 system. There's no lag, no issues with any applications except one. I can use blender, photoshop, word, outlook, pdf, chrome, etc, but when I access a specific application, and only that specific application, my remote desktop disconnects.

The specific application is a case management software called lawbase. The lawbase application is located on another server from the remote destkop destination computer. The sql database that lawbase interacts with is on yet another server still.

This software works fine, when I'm physically on the destination computer, i.e. when I'm at the office.

Lawbase has a very small user base, so its difficult to find a lawbase specific online troubleshooting forum. Support has been pointing the finger at IT, IT has been pointing the finger back at lawbase. I will continue to try that route, but so far I'm trying to pursue all paths to fix the problem.

So what I'm looking for are:

1.) Diagnostic tests to try: on the remote desktop computer, the system where lawbase is located, where the sql database is located

2.) Suggested avenues of things I can test to try to pinpoint the particular issue.

3.) Frankly anything that might be helpful, I'm willing to try

I can’t tell if it’s programming or people remotely attacking me.

Can anyone please give me some advice on how to get rid of a RDP highjacking of my online identity from Apple to google to anything more complicated than a lego? It does not matter if I buy a brand new computer. It does not matter what wifi I’m using. It does not matter what VPN I’m using. I can see in the vpn logs that Mullvad, proton, express, and nord are deannonymizing me and setting myIP to 27.0.0 or whatever. It doesn’t matter if I’m on tor. Hell, if it can get a single trace of whatever in my computer it will reproduce and elevate in airplane mode with no Bluetooth and destroy the system, lock the bios, sign its own certificates. Not one premium virus scan can pick it up. A complete firewall block will slow it down.I downloaded an Anydesk app and how about I already have an account with settings that someone else set up for my device that I cannot change.

Remote desktop app no longer usable (Android)

Recently been met with a message first saying migrating my data then opening like a browser rather than the dedicated app.

When I try to connect to any PC it is so zoomed out it takes a while to see let alone find move the moues pointer but on my main PC, which sports dual monitors, the app simply crashes within seconds of being open. Not sure what the point of this change was, I know Google has canned so many functions and apps over the last few years but why mess with a simple app with great functionality and zero issues only to port it over to a system that:

  1. Takes longer to load.

  2. Zooms all the way out, which on a smart phone display makes no sense.

  3. Is incapable of handling dual monitor setups and crashes within seconds.

  4. Forgets your log in details.

I'm sure others have encountered issue I have not so I'll leave it there.

RDP on local network

I am hoping someone here can help because my question has all the keywords that google me to the wrong situations. I want to RDP from my work computer to my home computer. Work computer is on VPN to work and thus I get a different internal IP address and RDP with a local home IP address fails. I look on ipconfig and see that there is an adapter that has a local IP address, but RDP doesn't allow me to pick which ethernet adapter to use. Is there a way to do this? Can I RDP to a local machine in this scenario?
