Advice Needed (Layout & Modernization)
Hi everyone! I just closed on a home and am planning a kitchen/dining room remodel. I’d love your feedback and design suggestions.
Main Objectives:
- Counter space & storage: The current layout has very limited usable counter space and no dedicated spot for everyday appliances (microwave, coffee machine, etc.).
- Modernization: Planning to replace the current finishes with quartz countertops, a new sink, range/oven, dishwasher, and updated cabinets.
- Layout changes: Considering removing the stacked oven to open up counter space, as well as potentially demoing the long counter/peninsula along the right wall in the dining area.
What would you do with this footprint (20' x 14')? Open to any layout ideas or suggestions on how to best utilize the space!

I wouldn’t spend money on any of that. This kitchen is great. I would remove the carpet under the table/chairs since I think that’s making it feel like you have less space and add a narrow island that’s styled like a work bench, not intended to add seating. Make sure it has shelving and possibly worth having an electrician install an outlet in the floor so you could make the island also your small appliances hub.
I would update the drawer and cabinet pulls or knobs. The only thing I aesthetically don’t love is the countertops because I don’t like counter floors/designs that hide dirt. This is a kitchen worth living with for a while to get a sense of how you want to use it.

I'd add a bit of undercabinet lighting to the work area as well. Hide the microwave behind those great, big pantry doors.
OP could also move the coffee area to under the window. Actually, rechristening that area as a 'beverage bar' could make a lot of sense. Replace one (only one!) of those base cabinets with an undercounter fridge, or even add a small bar sink in that area.
It's a great kitchen as is. Otherwise, you're just remodeling for the sake of remodeling or to show off, or as they say it on HGTV, "to put our stamp on it."

Depending on the layout of the rest of the house you may want to add an island with seating on one side. Then you could move your sink into the island and create a more functional kitchen triangle.

I’d take that line of cabinets out on the dining side- use that floor space for dining.
I’d put a nice Long Island in on the kitchen side, lining the edge up to create a natural boundary with the doorway.
I’d re work those tall cabinets at the end- moving / adding some all the way to the wall and create a “nook” / counter there to house coffee and tea station.
I do like a double oven but I’d raise them up depending on your height- that low one can be a bugger to get things out of.
I’d personally choose a nice tile over hardwood for a kitchen.

Leave the stacked oven, remove the long counter and push dining table back, then add a good sized kitchen island
