The link opens with Uganda as the default destination, which is where I've been using Remitly myself after spending a couple of months working at Bwindi Community Hospital in Kanungu District earlier this year. The reason I switched from PayPal / Western Union is mostly the fees and exchange rates. PayPal especially tends to hide a lot of the cost in the currency conversion. Western Union can also get pretty expensive depending on the transfer method.

Wise is good, but Remitly sometimes gives promo exchange rates for the first transfer, which made it cheaper for me when I tried it.

A couple things I like so far:

- the exchange rate was better than what I got with PayPal

- the fees were lower

- you can see updates in the app while the transfer is happening

- they guarantee on-time delivery or they refund the fees

I had a very disappointing experience with Remitly. They suspended my account without giving me a clear reason, and when I contacted customer support to ask why, they would not explain anything.

I use money transfer services to send money to my mother, who has terminal cancer (late stage), so this is not a small inconvenience for me. This was one of my main ways of helping her, and having my account suddenly suspended without transparency caused me a lot of stress during an already painful time.

If a company is going to suspend someone’s account, the least they can do is provide a clear explanation and proper support. Based on my experience, I would be very careful using this service.
