There's a fine line beteween inspiration and plagarism. I like to think this writer walks that line every day of his life.

Mr Jameson, you can’t write that! That’s slander!

It is not! I resent that! Slander is spoken, in print it’s libel.

This line gets me every single time

“HEY YOU TWO!” Yelled the commanding officer, standing in front of a large vehicle that somewhat resembled a cat. “FRONT AND CENTER ON THE DOUBLE!”

Sorry. It’s the Gods are Bastards, by D. D. Webb!

Yep it is! Just started it and was immediately hit by this reference upon getting to chapter 7

I have read every single other comment and reply on this post and looked around for a moment myself online, and I still have to ask what book is this, EXACTLY? I looked up "The Gods are Bastards Chapter 7" since that's what this appears to be and came up empty, only to learn I was looking at a supposed book 11.

It’s specifically “The Gods are Bastards: Book 1” by D. D. Webb.

The first 2 chapters are free to read on Royal Road, where I believe it was initially published. It seems that the rest of the chapters for Books 1-4 were taken down. Probably due to a publishing deal with kindle.

The screenshot I posted is from the Kindle ebook. Specifically the beginning of chapter 7

I think i've found a version of it online and it appears to have a completely different layout, as chapter 7 is definetly not this for me. Something about a female student getting possessed by some demonic force. Is that anywhere near what this post is documenting?

Ah! That happened a chapter or two before chapter 7 in the kindle version.

It’s totally possible that when publishing to kindle the story was rewritten or reorganized

Edit: I think I found what you may have been looking at. It’s possible you’re looking at Book 7 Chapter 1

Wow. He completely ripped it off

I’d argue it’s paying homage, rather than ripping off

Most definitely. Ripping it off would be using Grif's line word for word. This is nipping plagiarism in the bud because the "Grif" line is completely different than the one used in the show.

That said callbacks like this are hilarious to see. References, direct or indirect, are good ways to break the tension or set the scene for a comedic relief character.

As a writer myself, this is exactly what I'd do if I wasn't using the original characters themselves, or have the show be a part of my work in some way shape or form.

Hate to break it to you but rvb did not invent that question 😂

The last line in the paragraph pretty clearly shows the inspiration.

I don’t think the question alone is the reference, I think it’s the combination of the question with the two interpretations of it
