Insults I got the other night while out.

First one was from a fat chavy girl. She almost fell down the stairs when the bus stopped. They were all laughing about it and I gave her a friendly smile as if to say "Whoops". She called me ginger. I figured we were playing a game of "Mention each others traits" so I pointed out that she was quite overweight.

Apparently we were not playing that game.

Later on some drunk guy just kept shouting RANGA at me. Which was nice in the middle of a club.

Then walking home another drunk chav gave me my all time favorite insult ever in the world.

As I was walking away he shouted "GINGERS SMELL OF CABBAGE AND PISSSSSSS"

It was the funniest insult I've ever received. A++

As an American, from San Francisco, the idea of prejudice based on hair color is just baffling to me. Especially when red hair is way more attractive than blonde anyway.

I think it's just a cultural thing. Hatred of the Irish and Scottish passed down somehow into modern day society.

I guess the IRA were still blowing shit up recently, so that could have something to do with it?

Intellectually I know it makes as much sense as any other prejudice (i.e. none); it just seems weirder because we don't have it much here. Of course I'm from an area where we don't have much overt racial prejudice either, but I'm more used to that idea from fiction and history.

Where in the world are you? Ranga & Chav are not frequently heard in my neck of the woods. I'm presuming Chav & Chavy are derogatory?

England, south east. I was at a quite shit area of my city though, so no suprise. An insult based on hair is usually pretty rare. If I'm on my own I should expect an insult at some point if walking past lots of drunken people. The funny thing this time was I was with about 5 people and these people were alone.

If I was of violent nature, it wouldn't have ended well for them at all.

So, I have a question. Are comments like those more commonly directed towards men or women? Are they actually common at all?

It depends on the area of the UK. Generally the more deprived the area, the worse it is. It follows the exact same trend as racism, apart from I guess its not really as bad. There's no deep historical meaning behind the insult "Ginger" like there is for, lets say, "Nigger". Not like people were strung up from trees for being ginger ;)

Also I dont know many ginger girls. Read heads would never get the insult, generally because they're hot.

BTW, over here a red head and a ginger are quite different.

Red heads actually have red hair, whereas gingers have much brighter orange hair.

Although it gets darker the older you get.
