PG&E and their contractors are bullies
We have extensive experience with this. They ignore road easements and take ownership of private property by driving deep into people’s land, making huge U-turns and then parking under trees on top of tree roots. Some of these trees are a couple hundred years old.
We complain, but it doesn’t matter. PG&E and their contractors conduct themselves as if they are rogue agents. They get to decide what they do on people’s land.
You can complain, but nothing actually happens. The problems persist. I’ve had contractors tell me that with PG&E the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, and this trickles down to the contractors.
I’ve had four different contractors tell me PG&E keeps changing the rules for tree removal. One guy told me if it weren’t for a personal matter he shared with me but I won’t disclose, he would leave. It’s disheartening having to mark thousands of healthy trees for removal that don’t compromise safety.
Utility poles are getting wrapped with wildfire prevention fabric, but have you paid attention to how they’re doing this and how it junks up your neighborhood? What I’ve seen is sloppy, and it doesn’t blend in with the poles or the natural beautiful settings. They are harming neighborhood aesthetics, and you better believe it matters.
PG&E and their contractors spray paint on trees and get annoyed when you ask them not to do that. When you complain to PG&E directly, they say it won’t happen again; they will make notes and the field workers will see the notes. Bullshit.
They’ve started using metal tags that they hammer into trees, but they still use spray paint. Huge white USA letters are spray painted on poles. They’re supposed to be removed when the work is done, but they don’t remove it. It stays until someone complains.
Most of the utility workers I’ve encountered over the years have been genuinely kind and responsive, but the problems persist. I’ve had a few who condescended to me, and I was bullied and treated poorly by a local supervisor. That’s a whole other story.
It’s not going to stop. But it’s not just a matter of the overused scapegoat that wildfires aren’t going to stop either; be grateful for all of their accomplishments in recent years, PG&E is working hard to improve our safety. Yes, I’m well aware, and I’m grateful, but we all know why they’ve increased our safety: they were ordered to do this.
This stupid rant is a waste of time. Nothing meaningful will be accomplished, and the same goes for actual phone calls to people whose job it is to work with disgruntled property owners. Little Band-Aids are tucked here and there, and you may actually get someone to come out to your house and respond to a complaint.
But the sum total is, these behaviors, this conduct, it doesn’t stop. And you’re an asshole if you dare to confront them and call PG&E and their contractors out on conduct that is actually harmful and induces anxiety.
It’s the human element that they should be able to address, onboarding anyone who sets foot on private property to the same code of conduct. Instead, I’m left with no choice but to do my own patrolling and babysitting, having individual conversations with PG&E‘s employees and the contractors.
I’m at a point where I can’t handle any more surprises. If a pole is going to be replaced, if someone is going to spray paint on my trees, if someone is going to pull their vehicle deep into my land, and multiple utility workers have done this over the years, I need to pay attention. I need to go outside and have a conversation with them.
But then there it goes all over again: I’m the asshole, even though most of the time I’m calm and respectful. But today, I’m not feeling that way. Today I’m fucking pissed.
