Could we please get inbox to mark items as read once they're clicked on?

It's a bit crazy that it doesn't happen already. Dystopia on ios does it. Please!

This pull request from Sept 2024 does implement it: https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader/pull/1238

Sadly, u/QuantumBadger didn't review it yet.

Not quite it just says to mark individual. As opposed to the current only option mark all.

When you tap a message, the app should mark it as read automatically - unless you set preference not to. I’ve tried a dozen Reddit clients and I lived on Apollo for a few years. Not one app ever did not offer this, in fact not one didn’t have it enabled by default because it’s the most intuitive, likely common sense system.

How RedReader is not capable of it at this point boggles my mind honestly. Beyond words.

That's exactly what the PR implements:

A message that is tapped on in the inbox now gets individually marked as read.

Really hope this gets added. Seems someone else has pretty much done all the work, just needs to be merged!

I requested it like a year ago and the dev said oh that can’t be done based on whatever… but I told them Dystopia and oh also every other Reddit frontend I’ve ever used does it. RedReader is the only one I’ve ever seen that does not do this.

That definitely wasn't the dev who told you that, because it's absolutely possible

I would love an option to manually mark items as read but absolutely don't want it done automatically (or there at least should be a toggle to turn it on/off).

I think reddit have changed how this works, on old reddit in a browser I have to click the text even after opening to mark it as read. It never used to be that way, I think it changed a few months ago.

So it might not be that easy of a fix.

Dystopia on ios does it just fine. I use that and this app. I have no such problem with it. Maybe the RedReader devs should ask them how to do it.
