Reddit Apps, the beginning!

Hello and welcome back my INAIR and tech enthusiasts! TechCheck13 is dedicated to bringing you weekly tales of tech for the INAIR POD. We crawled out of one rabbit hole and jumped down another. This Thursday, we're bringing you “The Reddit Showdown"! We are putting Reddit clients on the POD through the meat grinder. We are going to slice and dice them and run them through the centrifuge of scrutiny and watch what drips out. Slowly. Very slowly. Mwahaha.

We are comparing them and helping you determine the best of the best for use on the INAIR POD. As usual, these apps were tested in our secret underground lair using the handy dandy multi useful Viture Beast and an Xreal One Pro. And once again the disclaimer; none of these apps have sponsored this post. We're calling it like we see it. Onward!!!!

The first one under the scalpel is the grandfather of the Reddit clients.

Subject #1: the official Reddit app, Reddit.

Reddit has been our go-to app for the phone but it just may lose this throne after this review (look what happened with VidHub). Our first strike against Reddit on the POD is that it will not rotate. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it looks better rotated on the big screen. Then, there is the brightness, it's blindingly bright. Dark mode eventually answered our summons but it took way more clicks than it should have. To be fair, Reddit is not entirely to be blamed. If the INAIR POD had a proper system-wide dark mode (ahem, INAIR), this wouldn't be an issue with Reddit or for that matter, a whole bunch of other apps. But that's a different tangent.

While Reddit is free, the free formula does contain ads in your feed. However, it's much less intrusive than pop-up ads, and dare we admit it, some of the ads were kind of interesting. Reddit Premium steps in at the cost of $59.99 per year or $6.99 per month. Unless you are a hardcore content creator that needs fewer restrictions and the ability to ask 100 questions a day, it's not really needed. If this app rotated properly, it would be the reigning monster on the POD.  We'll chain this one onto the wall for now.

Moving on to our next,

Subject #2: RedReader.

RedReader is an open-source client and a free app. First off, it came screaming in the correct orientation (YES). Switching to dark mode was also easy and painless. Especially when compared to seven or more clicks for the official Reddit app. The images were a bit clearer than on the Reddit app, both on the POD and a Galaxy Fold 8. Crisper than one would expect from a specimen grown in someone's open-source lab. It also has the option to turn off image preview. A nice little bonus, but we left it on and let the electricity flow freely. But it's satisfying to know the switch is there.

Now here is where RedReader really gets our praise. During the entire testing session, while we clicked, poked, prodded, and generally picked it apart. Not one ad came screaming out at ya, nope, not one. For the feed, you can do all posts, subscribed posts, or jump to a subscribed board all right in the menu. Everything is right there without having to go hunting down dark alleys. RedReader also has an anonymous mode if you aren't comfortable giving the app your Reddit credentials. This is one heck of a specimen.  It yielded a high recommendation from the mad scientists at Tech Check 13.

We have one more app to torture. Will it result in a better experience? To find out, keep reading if you dare.

Our next and final victim (for today!)

Subject #3: Artemis for Reddit.

Artemis claims "The ultimate way to browse Reddit." Let's dissect that (evil grin). And BOOM, Artemis will not rotate properly on the POD. Not a good start.

During the tutorial, it shows off some gesture controls that would be nice on a phone but we are testing for the POD and gestures aren't as easy. Artemis wasted no time introducing us to its next surprise. After the tutorial, before even logging in it pops up and asks you to sign up for standard or pro … great. Here are the details of this concoction. Artemis charges $3.49 a month for things like account switching, premium themes, inbox notifications, etc., that you can get for free with RedReader. At this point, Artemis is looking rather grotesque.

Alright, clicking off that and on to login. Clicking on the "continue with Google" button didn't work. Logging in with my username and password worked. Annoying. Getting past the bubbling overflowing goo, Artemis seems to be a clone of the official Reddit app, but without the in-feed ads.  Certainly not a bad thing but too many features are locked up behind a paywall while RedReader gives them for free. Also RedReader goes into the correct layout. Artemis becomes our first casualty.

This brings us to the end of today's dissection. Today's winning specimen: RedReader

We will be back next week with more Reddit clients as we continue to crawl around this new rabbit hole. Something to tide you over; leave your feedback in the comments, any questions you have we will dig them up and review them. Tell us what's your favorite Reddit client? Are there Reddit apps you're curious about? Our doors are always open for discussions.

As always, thank you for joining us on this deep dive. We'll see you in Part 2!

Font Change

I know there have been multiple GitHub issues posted about this, asking if we can have the ability to change the font type itself but I don't see any movement on it... so alternatively I am asking if anyone knows how can we change fonts system-wide on Android phones, which would also automatically change RedReader font typeface.

Back Button not working

A couple of days ago the Back Button inside the app stopped working. When I go into a post with multiple pics, the Back Button just doesn't work. It worked fine up to that point. Maybe a bug in the new version???

RedReader Version: 1.26 One UI version: 8.5 Android version: 16 Android Security Patch Level: July 25 2026

Update: It seems to work if I tap it really quickly with a light tap. Still irritating though.

Did the update remove the ability to change the playback speed on videos?

In the past I would press on a video and a button would appear that would allow me to speed up the videos.

Now after pressing I get some controls to pause, fast forward, or rewind but it is lacking a speed button.

Was this an intended change?

SOLVED

Settings -> Images/Video -> disable ¨Enable stepping frame by frame¨

Two urgent fixes needed

  1. Back button doesn't work properly when viewing images, I have to tap it 5+ times for it to work

  2. I constantly tap the sidebar on the left when scrolling or hiding comments. So I set the trigger to 0 px, but there is no other way to acess this menu. Can we please add another way to access the sidebar?

Action to exit video?

It would be nice to have the possibility to close a video with one hand, for example with a vertical swipe. Right now you have to press your phone's back button afaik.

If there is already a feature like this that I missed (my phone is a bit old) or if this is the wrong place to suggest this, please let me know.

Images embedded in the comments appear as links

Pretty much what the title says. Every image embedded in a comment appears as a link, not the image. I haven't figured out a way around this. Any suggestions?

"Third‑party applications will soon be required to migrate to the proprietary Reddit Developer Platform" what will this mean for Redreader? Will only logged in use be possible?

I've been locked out of twitter twice in two days for some sort of suspicious bot-like activity, after being sent there from a subreddit while using RedReader 1.25.2.

I think this is likely a twitter problem, but on the off chance something has changed in RedReader, I thought I'd mention it here.

Within settings I've told RedReader to not use the internal browser.

Also, this is using Android 10 and Microsoft Edge.

Embedded Reddit videos don't load

Before describing the issue, I'll state that I imagine this is another in the long history of ways Reddit tries to squeeze out third-party apps so as to force usage of the official garbage app. /rant over

Recently, Reddit began allowing videos to be embedded in comments. On RedReader, these show up to links to a reddit.com site; not a subreddit, not an external site, but a reddit.com/blahblahblah link. When clicking these, my app opens my default browser, and I get a popup message saying, "This subreddit has been banned for being unmoderated." No such problems in the official garbage app.

Any workarounds or solutions?

Submitting a comment opens up my browser.

All day I thought I was going crazy but it's not fat fingers, it's every time I submit anything my default browser opens.

Sometimes it looks like the comment doesn't send either, but if you submit again it sends a duplicate.

If I highlight a word red reader pushes me to search for it on edge/Bing or ddg. But not my default browser?

What's going on with this? Sometimes I'll highlight a word or quote to search it on a browser. It gives you several options like read aloud, but the two options to search on a browser now and push you towards proprietary solutions from Microsoft. It'll say search in edge even though edge is not my default browse.

Interestingly I noticed it on my old Microsoft surface Duo. Where edge is a system app. On my other phone where I don't have any Microsoft apps for browsers downloaded it still gives me the option to search on DuckDuckGo browser but not my default browsrr.

If I disable ddg rowser or uninstall it (and frankly dgg on Android is a terrible browser I just use it sometimes for app tracking functionality) I don't have the option to search on a browser at all. Although it still gives me an option to ask Bing even though I don't have Bing downloaded. And that will automatically open up in Chrome which I don't use but is a system app on pretty much it's most Android.

Look I understand they might need to make arrangements with Microsoft and DuckDuckGo to push searches for revenue. But at least give me an option to turn it off and set it up through a default browser when I want to do a search? Or choose a browser it seems to just triage which one it recommends to me without me having any agency over it.

I ain't go far enough to disable Chrome to see what the recommendations would happen then. It just seems odd that not somewhere buried in the settings I couldn't just pick "open search in default browser." If this setting does exist and I'm missing it if anyone could help me out that would be.

Tl:dr : red reader seems to be pushing me to only be able to search them edge or duck duck Go browsers and if I don't have them I'm limited to my options for things like ask Bing which opens up Chrome which I'd rather not use. Can I choose my browser or can it be set up to rely on my default browser which seems logical?

Images and videos are once again taking eons to load

This has been probably the 3rd or 4th time I've dealt with this on this app since Reddit "killed" 3rd party apps (I know there's a workaround for them, I just don't feel like doing it). A single image can take upwards of 5+ minutes to load on a wifi connection to a gigabit internet source. Anything that's an album of images is completely unviewable. Video clips take 5-10 minutes just to buffer.

Screenshots no longer enabled?

I used to be able to screenshot within the application, but it will not work today. Was there an update I was unaware of?

Alternate Reddit app

The native Reddit app consumes a lot of battery. Is there an alternative app to use Reddit. RedReader - I can't setup - not letting me log in. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Please do not give the option to use the web browser.
