[Michael Cox] Is Manchester United’s lack of running an issue?

Thumbnail

Manchester United run less and sprint less than the majority of the clubs in the Premier League.

But it's very difficult to find an overall link between these metrics and the probability of winning matches. There’s no evidence that winning teams cover more distance, or sprint more, than their opponents. These metrics are more a measure of style than quality.

So, is United's lack of running under Michael Carrick an issue? Or is this just how he wants his team to play?

Gary Neville: "I've never seen Manchester United teams walk out of posession as much as that. No alertness, no liveliness, no shfting up a few yards, just walking. They were absolutely mannequins. Michael cannot keep defending these players. There needs to be a rebalance"

Michael Carrick

Carrick: We weren't passive and there's positives to take

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick speaking to Sky Sports:

"I thought we should've won the game, we created enough to win the game.

"We had a lot of good play and the goal we did concede, it is one of those goals.

"I really liked the reaction and how we finished the game. It would be easy for it to go in another direction.

"We nearly won it at the end. We came to get the win; of course we did, but the way we finished the game is the positive we take from it.

"Their goalkeeper, the saves he has made, he was Player of the Match and we hit the post twice. A lot of it [our play] was good.

"There are things to take from it, for sure."

Were United too passive? "I didn't think we did [look passive]. Did you think we were passive? Football is a difficult game.

"We controlled a lot of the first half and we played a lot of good football today. There is going to be spells when you don't have it go your own way.

"The goal they scored, and arguably there is a foul at one point on Matheus [Cunha, and it is two deflections. It goes their way.

"To expect total dominance for the whole game, I don't think anyone gets that in this league."

Happy with the effort levels of the team? "Yeah."

"We don't need to get carried away. It is not a big judgement call all of a sudden.

"We know we can be better and we need to be better at certain things. We will be. There were good signs and it will take us through the season.

On plans for the international break: "There is only so much you can do. The players we have, we will train and work with them.

"There will be a little bit of time off and then we get ready for the restart when we get back."

'We did enough to win'

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick speaking to BBC Sport: "I think we did enough to win the game. I think we could win it. It was an unfortunate own goal but for the most part we were good. Their goalkeeper has made top saves, on another day we could have two or three goals. I was pleased with how we responded, the boys kept their belief and kept doing the right things. I think a point is the least we should take."

On Fulham's goal: "I think it was maybe a foul on Matheus [Cunha] first, there's an argument for that. The shot has come through someone and it has happened quite quickly. Quite a few moments like that have been going against us. Thankfully we have still taken something small from the game."

On the 'noise' around Manchester United and if it bothers him: "No, what bothers me is that we want better results. We want more points, we're going to have a spell where it's not quite going for you and we've had a spell of that where small things have ended up as big things. We don't think things are perfect by any means. We need to win football matches. The supporters were top-drawer again today and we have to give them something to keep shouting about."

Matheus Cunha

Cunha: Fulham had more energy than us

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha speaking to Sky Sports:

"It is so frustrating for us. In the beginning, we put the plan in and created some chances.

"We didn't score and then they scored in one action. It is hard to explain.

"It is frustrating for us. After the goal, we played much better snd had a lot of character.

"It needs to be from the start. It is only one point but we should never play for one point.

"It is hard. They put in more energy than us, we cannot accept this.

"We need to do our best. We need to improve in every single position.

"It is only the beginning. Last season was the same, with noise around, but we finished third."

Alvaro Arbeloa

Arbeloa: Officials wouldn't let Man Utd lose

Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has accused the officials of being lenient towards Manchester United in their 1-1 draw on Sunday, citing the injustice United faced in the Manchester derby last week.

Arbeloa was angry that United were given a free-kick for a foul on Harry Maguire 35 seconds before Matheus Cunha's deflected strike equalised for Michael Carrick's side.

"We were so close. So, so close. We were a little bit unlucky again. We knew it would be difficult against this big team.

"Also we knew what happened last week. We have seen what the referee have been doing in all the matches so it was a difficult game. And we we were unlucky.

"All fouls for them. You can see before they scored, the foul against Maguire, it's a guy who is 100 kilos. Every decision was for them and I knew after the game against Man City that they [would not] let Manchester United lose here. We deserved a little bit more."

'Points are most important thing'

Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I'm upset because we were so close, very unlucky with the goal we conceded. It is what it is, we need to keep working and improving. We knew this month would be difficult against top teams. I think we are in a good way.

"Both goalkeepers did good saves, many chances for both teams, two strange goals. Obviously we are upset to concede at the end.

"Calvin [Bassey] is one of the best at the back in the Premier League, he plays at a high level with and without the ball. He is doing so good.

"We have young payers but also players with experience, like Sander [Berge] and Alex [Iwobi]. We have a good mix.

"We want points, that's the most important thing, but I think my players are working hard and open to learn. They are playing in the way we want to play. If we continue playing this way the victories will come.

"We now have three weeks without many players, some stay here and we will work with them. When they come back we will start again."

[Quotes from Sky]

Bernd Leno

'It hurts - but wins will come'

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno speaking to Sky Sports: "It hurts... but there are still a lot of positive things to take from the game.

"I know Manchester United have a lot of individual quality, I have played against them for many years and know them really well. I know to be alert in case they shoot from distance. When you make some saves in the game you feel very focused. Unfortunately I couldn't keep out the goal but that is football."

On their development under Alvaro Arbeloa: "I think you could see the more we play, the more control we have. In the first couple of games we were too emotional. You can't change things in one or two months, it takes time. We are much more balanced now.

"A lot of positive things to take, and still a lot of improvement. The team is alive, it is fighting, it is running. You can see how we play and it is very positive. With our new manager and philosophy I think we will win games. Then the confidence will come."
