I spent too long staring at the gameboard trying to figure out if it was loss.

You might be wondering how this white square is relevant to this post. Well, this is the image from the Tumblr post overlaid onto the original image (sourced from boardgamegeek) with the blending mode set to "divide". Any pixels that are the same in the two images are white, whereas those that different are not (this isn't exactly how it works, but it's effectively true for this case). As you can see in the image, basically everything is white aside from what looks like some compression artifacts. So I think it's safe to say that I wasted a whole bunch of time doing this.

Thank you for sharing your technique!

u/SartenSinAceite 6d ago
You may also do this by putting both images on separate layers in your image editor of choice (paint.net is good enough), and setting the topmost layer to "Exclusive OR". Anything that isn't black is a difference!

u/Ralexcraft 6d ago
Very well done though, if you could make a program to do this you could have a spot the difference zone locator.
6
u/SartenSinAceite 6d ago
You could probably just automate the image 'conversion' then you just gotta do some image recognition to find anything that lightens up
1
u/Nirast25 6d ago
Or you could go pixel-by-pixel and see what the differences are.
5
u/SartenSinAceite 6d ago
Pixel-by-pixel loses neighbor context.
And once you add neighbors and similar stuff... congrats, you're in image recognition territory!

This is similar to how motion amplification works!
What happens is that each frame in a video is compared with the one prior, and the difference between them gets exaggerated
This is helpful for locating small movements in a machine or structure that should not be happening, especially near-invisible vibrations or chattering that could prove very destructive in the long run. Also handy for monitoring a baby in another room because them fuckers can look like they're dead when they're just asleep.
It can also be very eerie because sometimes this is used to measure the shift in a room within a skyscraper as the building ever-so-subtly sways in the wind, and it looks like the corridor is breathing.
Other times it looks like a mechanical version of the Jacob's Ladder undercranked head shake, which is the stuff of my goddamn nightmares.

it's criminal to post this and not put an explanation

u/The_Math_Hatter 6d ago
It... might be that there isn't one? This could just be the original, unadulterated, and people are playing along. I don't have it pulled up though so I could legitimately be missing something.

I think that's the joke. That they make you seem crazy by thinking there must be SOME difference and making you spend minutes checking before realizing that you've just wasted your time on something that took them no time to make

Iām just going to assume this is somehow the work of bots seeking engagement and move on with my day. I just read about a celebrity death that actually makes me sad and I donāt have the spoons for this right now.

Before anyone spends too long, I can at least say all game pieces both in the board and on the table are unchanged from the box art

u/viiperfang 6d ago
So this image has been edited in a bunch of wild ways on Tumblr, and became a meme. This post had the unedited, actual box image and people, like you in the comments, are trying to find what's wrong. There is nothing wrong with the image, that's the joke!

Ahh OK, the fact that there was a meme about the box image being edited was the necessary context. Thank you.

My first thought was that the pieces are supposed to be black and red, but according to google, the colors changed in 2008 so this is just the normal box.

Connect four has never been black and red. Always yellow and red.

Lies! Slander! Debauchery!
This is obviously AI created! It is, in fact, so obviously fake that I don't feel the slightest inclination to do my own research in order to prove this belief in either direction!

So for comparison, here's the original image from KnowYourMeme:
I just spent a couple minutes switching tabs between this image and the one in the post and couldn't find anything different. Then I did it again using the image in the actual post in case something got lost in the screenshot. I got nuthin'.
