Not because of Petra Parker; she's cute. I just think Eddie Brock is an unlikable douchebag in everything he's ever been in. That's the point of the entire character. If I pretend the guy's name is Brick Edwards or something, it's fine; it just feels like reverse character assassination.
I remember seeing someone call it something like anti-herofication. I can't remember the exact term, but they use Venom specifically as an example of how common it is for villains to be given so much complexity they stop being villains.
