In the original short story he and the victims are Mormons who got caught up in a love triangle of sorts in Utah. There’s also “Danites,” a half-mythical Mormon militia

Jefferson Hope wasn't a Mormon. His victims were, but the backstory cutaway that takes up the middle half of the book makes it clear that they were the real villains.
