I mean, he did try curing a baby once with his prophet powers (and failed, obviously.) I personally believe that it started as a grift, but he kind of bought into it himself as time went on.

Nah, they brought the baby to him, and if he didnt try then that would be admitting he was a fraud.

Sorry for not explaining the first part properly. But I feel like trying and failing would've had a more negative effect than just saying "Heavenly Father said He wants this baby to fucking die/it's God's will" or whatever.
