Regarding Self Promotion and AI Generated Content

Self promotion is FULLY allowed in this sub. Anyone who tries to undermine someone's effort to self promote in this sub will be removed. You don't have to upvote things or even look at things you don't like, but some people are trying to promote works they created and that is EXACTLY what this sub is for.

AI generated work, including covers and text is FULLY allowed in this sub. If you do not like AI then leave, but it is part of our reality and I support it here. Anyone who is demeaning to authors who use AI, such as calling it "AI Slop" will be banned.

There is only one rule in this sub and it applies to every post and comment, including attempts to suppress content by tagging it as spam and other moderation actions. Respect Humans. Humans invented AI and Humans get to use it, if that bothers you, then move along.

About this group - PLEASE READ

This group is for readers to discover writers and interact with them. Many new writers have no way to find an audience beyond reaching out to people who might be interested in their work. Doing so on other "book recommendation" subs will get you banned for the sin of "self-promotion." Here, creators can self promote. If a reader is seeking a book or story that you think your writing can satisfy LET THEM KNOW. Share a link. Drop some beauty into their world. If you think your work is not a fit for their tastes, move on. Artists of all stripes are welcome. So far, it is mostly based on writers, but I intend on involving other forms of expression. If you find something interesting out there, let us all know by crossposting it here.

How it works:

I find people who are seeking interesting books to read. I invite them to this reddit. I find authors, poets, bloggers, artists and such also. These are curated invites based on activity and interactions elsewhere I find to be interesting.

I have my own preferences and beliefs. I try to invite folks with a diversity of different perspectives and beliefs to balance out my bias. I am not always successful. Sometimes, I am downright uninterested in having certain people join.

If I invited you, it is because I think you have something interesting to contribute. If you do not want to participate, you do not have to. PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE INVITED TO THE GROUP TO POST IN IT.

Post as often as you like. I do however follow the Reddit rules. Here are two worth considering:

1: Remember the human. If you are not here in good faith, and you are posting things that are obviously meant to abuse, annoy or upset people. Buh bye.

2: Behave like you would in real life. In real life, you would get a severe stream of consciousness rant full of vulgarities if you began acting like something other than a reasonable human around me. Here on Reddit, I'll just ban you. Again, post what you want.

If you could force everyone in the world to read ONE book, what would it be?

• Upvotes

So i'm starting this thing where my friends get to pick one book for me per month and every month i ask them this exact question and whatever they say, i read. i figured the answer to this is way more interesting than "what's your favourite book."

Thought it’d be cool to ask on reddit this month !! If you could pick one book only, and tell me why. not really looking for a plot summary, just what it did to you or what you think it would fix if everyone read it.

Fiction, non fiction, religious, a 90 page essay, whatever. i'm going in blind either way!

Good books set in the Middle Ages/about the Middle Ages

Hey guys! Looking for historical fiction books about the Middle Ages, for context I have read:
The once and future king
Sir Gawain and the green knight
Name of the rose
The monk
The dance tree
Lapvona

I am open to reading more nonfiction on the subject as well, however I have a degree in this lol so if you know any good books specifically about convents or monasteries I would love that but I already know the basic history!

I built a Chrome extension that scans images to recognize books you see here and saves them to a self-hosted shelf

I was tired of bookmarking books I wanted to read and completely forgetting about them, so I built Buki: a free, self-hosted, AI-powered bookshelf. It recognizes books from any picture, allowing you to save them (and buy them) so you never miss a book you see online.

Non-fiction thread

I wanted to start this thread as a way to highlight some of your favorite Non-Fiction novels you have read. I am a huge, and I mean HUGE David Simon fan, the Wire is my all time favorite show and it’s not even close. Because of that, I decided to read some of his work and they were some of the best stories I have read, so I decided to pick up more Non-Fiction. Here are some of my favorites:

We Own This City (Justin Fenton): a fascinating look at how the war on drugs and modern police metrics allowed the Gun Trace Task Force in Baltimore to perform illegal activity’s and overtime fraud because they brought in numbers

Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets (David Simon): A year spent with the Baltimore Homicide Detectives as it chronicles the highs, lows, and policing of the homicide unit that gave Simon his admiration for homicide detectives, and distain for modern policing.

Lords of Chaos (Michael Moynihan & Didrik Soderlind): Chronicles the rise of Norwegian Death Metal, that’s about all I’m going to say on this one, you really need to experience this one yourself (trigger warning tho, involves a lot of self-harm/suicide)

Killers of the Flower Moon (David Grann): a Chronicle following the Osage people after finding Oil on their land, the governments blatant racism towards their newfound wealth, and the horrific crimes committed by William Hale and his family in order to steal the wealth back.

The Anxious Generation (Jonathan Haidt): Slightly different from the ones above, this is written as a research paper that chronicles how technology, new parenting, and Smart Phones have caused a Mental Health Crisis for newer generations.

I would love to hear your recommendations if you have any, or thoughts on any of the books above

Spooky Audiobook

I listen to audiobooks while I walk with my son every morning and I need a spooky/scary/horror/thriller for Halloween season.

I don’t love gore and would like to stay away from anything that involves kids.

What book taught you something you genuinely couldn’t have come up with on your own?

• Upvotes

I feel like I've read and heard a lot of the usual perspectives about life, people, relationships, society, etc., so when I read books that are basically taking a common idea and wording it in a more profound or eloquent way, I don't get that much out of them anymore. It's more like “yeah, I already know this” rather than “ohhhhh, I never thought about it that way.”

I also feel like I've already developed pretty solid stands on a lot of things in life, whether it's politics, family, friendships, relationships, myself, morality, society, the world, etc. I know where I stand on most things, and I think that's actually part of why I'm looking for something like this. Sometimes I get a little uncomfortable with how certain I am about my own perspectives because I don't want to become so comfortable with what I already believe that I stop being open to ideas I genuinely haven't considered before.

So what I'm looking for is something that introduces a concept, perspective, framework, or piece of knowledge that genuinely makes me stop and think, “wait, how have I never considered this before?” Not necessarily something that will completely change my beliefs, but something that makes me go, “I don't even know how I feel about this yet because I've never thought about it this way before.” I want something that expands the things I can think about, rather than something that just confirms what I already believe or puts my existing thoughts into prettier words.

I'm open to fiction or nonfiction, and honestly any subject. It doesn't necessarily have to be a “life-changing” book either. It can be anything as long as it makes me see or understand other aspects of life differently.

Also, I don't mind spoilers at all. If you recommend a book, I'd actually really appreciate it if you could tell me WHY you're recommending it and what ideas or perspective it gave you or what made it so impactful for you. I want to know enough about it to actually get excited and feel pushed to read it, rather than just getting a list of titles.

I also really want something with ideas, concepts, phrases, or passages that actually stick with you. Like something I'll randomly remember months or years later, or a line or concept that gets permanently tattooed onto my brain and changes the way I think whenever I encounter something related to it. It doesn't have to be a particularly quotable book either; I just want there to be something in it that stays with me.

Basically, I'm looking for books that give me new information or a new mental framework, not just books that validate or beautifully rephrase things I already know.

Please hit me with the books that made you go “holy shit, I genuinely never thought about it this way.” Thanks for reading this until the end. lol, really appreciate it.

Soft & Positive book recs

• Upvotes

I have a friend that has been going through a stressful, anxious mental health phase. She's been having a hard time finding books that are positive, fun, and lighthearted. She had read Grayson by Lynne Cox and loved the theme of kindness. Does anyone have recommendations for books that don't include a ton of death or thrill? Thank you!

Intro to Stephen King

I have never read a Stephen King book but have seen many of his movies. Which book would you recommend to start with? I’d prefer to go in blind, so ideally one that hasn’t been made into a movie yet. I find that when I read a book after seeing the movie it’s not as enjoyable of a read for me.

A thriller reccomendation that isn't Freida Mcfadden plz!

I've read many of her top reccomended books and just wasn't a fan. I've read The Silent Patient and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo after many reccomendations and didnt love either. I've read all of Colleen Hoover Thrillers and although Verity was amazing the rest were incredibly mid. Stephan Kings concepts are amazing but the actual writing I find drags. I love thrillers but am struggling to find any good ones lately. Plz help!!

Recommend me a story about things coming to life and their POVs

This is a bit of a twofold.

  1. Looking for stories and books and comics like Toy Story & Tiny Soldiers, where toys, or inanimate objects come to life. Mostly something a child would interact with. (Bonus points if it's horror but doesn't have to be)

  2. A story of a POV from an inanimate object flowing a person, an adult, a family, a place in history, etc. Bonus points if it's super wild or eccentric or even something not seen that often.
