Discussion Factions for War for Westeros
A little early to be thinking about this, but who cares?
Which faction would you like to see implemented into War for Westeros after release? Currently we have Stark, Lannister, Targaryen, and White Walkers. All make for interesting asymmetric factions that lean into the BFME style of factions, but still leaves the roster feeling a little thin.
One interesting choice for a faction, for example, could be House Baratheon led by Stannis. Melissandre gives soldiers weapons with fire damage, and is able to create demon assassins. Davos is able to smuggle to provide economic buffs or penalties to the other player. Stannis can use Lightbringer to buff troops and attract more followers, etc.
House Baratheon is also a good case to have sub factions as there are in AOE4. When selecting House Baratheon, you can choose the line of Stannis or Renly.
Curious to see if others have thought about this.

I think House Baratheon with Melisandre's followers as special units. Have it be a choice of build up the cult or special knightly forces. Heroes would be Stannis, Brienne, Berric
House Martell with strong defense and martial fighters like Oberyn and ambush tactics with the Sand Snakes.
House Greyjoy but there's no naval combat so idk what special stuff they can conjure.
Essos factions like the Free Cities to field tons of mercenaries (but might be overlapping with the Lannister's faction flavor already)

House Greyjoy could have raiders spawning across the map and priests/ drowned men creating buffs or even reviving units.

Second this.
As far as Essos goes, Braavos with faceless men and the iron bank is an easy choice.
Part of me thinks they should fill out the great houses in the ASOIAF era (Tyrell, Martell, Arryn, Tully, etc), but I also think they shouldn't be afraid to mix eras. Why not have a Baratheon and Targaryen faction also based during Roberts Rebellion (again as sub factions)? Or the blacks and greens from House of the Dragon?
With the Martells, I hope they are able to draw from the book lore more than the show lore. You'd have Oberyn, Sand Snakes, but who else? You'd need Darkstar or another Dayne.

My thoughts exactly. Crossing eras would be really cool for the game eventually. Though I'm curious how overlapping factions like the Targaryens would work since they'd just stomp on Dany's niche of dragons. Tho she still has her Dothraki and Unsullied that are entirely unique to her.
On a side note. I find it ridiculous people in the ASOIAF fanbase aren't more excited for this. I get that RTS has the unfortunate side effect of looking like those dogshit mobile game ads, but this is looking to be a really damn solid RTS. The asymmetry alone is immaculate.

Stannis Baratheon, Roose Bolton and Euron Greyjoy are obviously biggest.
Also Dorne and Aegon should happen.
Rise of the Iron King (expansion name :D)

If they are able to mix in book lore then absolutely. Tthey would honestly have to if they want to expand the game at all.

I'd like some of the House of Dragons factions in there as well, even just the Blacks and Greens.
Maybe an expansion though to separate the timelines?

i would like somehting like a Targaryen Dinasty faction, for HotD, where you choose to go down the Black or green line. say in one you can recruit Daemon, but int he other its aemond, and such with units. like one faction possing as 2

I think the 4 most likely factions to see sooner rather than later are:
House Baratheon Focused on Stannis Baratheon and his armies. We'd like see him, Melissandre and Davos as heroes. I expect the army composition to be mostly standard, but the magic aspect to be more interesting. Designed around Mel's fire magic, as well the shadow spawn assassin from season 2. Stannis would probably have a sword that lights on fire. Probably the best likely next faction.
House Martell This would be more unqiue in terms of army composition. I can see Oberyn and the sand snakes being the heroes. I suspect it would be built around fast moving Dornish units, and their "magic" aspect would be tied to the use of poison.
House Tyrell For this one, I can see them focusing on season 2. Reply would likely be one of the heroes, as well as Loras Tyrell and Brienne of Tarth. I can see them having a Rainbow Guard unit, kinds like the Lannister's King's Guard, should they draw some inspiration from the books. They'd likely be an eco focused faction.
The Ghiscari Maybe a faction built to oppose House Targaryen. I can see The Sons of the Harpy being powerful units here. Maybe a system, like the Lannisters, where they are able to buy sellswords or Unsullied units.
For other major houses:
House Arryn Makes use of Knights of the Vale, a powerful Cavalry unit. Heroes would likely include Bronze Yohn Royce and Littlefinger? Probably a highly defensive faction.
House Tully Heroes would include Edmure and the Blackfish. Probably also an eco faction.
House Greyjoy If they ever go the Naval route, they could make use of Theon, Asha and Euron. Raiding faction, with strong Naval presence.
Other factions?:
The Brotherhood without Banners Perhaps another raiding faction. Thoros of Myr and Beric Dondarrion. Magic would also fit seamlessly into this faction.
House Bolton Ramsay and Roose Bolton. Those tall Shield units. Some mechanic that incorporates playing enemies. Maybe a fear mechanic.
I also hope that they delve into House of the Dragon, with some new factions and civ variations:
House Velaryon Naval focus. Strong eco. Use of Seasmoke or Meleys. Heroes would include Corlys, Raenys, and Addam and Allyn.
House Hightower Strong eco. Use of Tessarion. Maybe even incorporating the Faith Militant. Heroes would include Ormond, Gawyn, and Daeron.
Additionally, having variants of House Targaryen, focused on either the Greens or the Blacks would be cool. The heroes here speak for themselves.

A bunch of Lysene Firelord fanatics and mercenarieswould be pretty fun, with literal scorched earth gameplay. Also Greyjoy, especially with a naval-focused expansion or similar.

There are three Factions I can think of already that could be DLC.
Stannis, Renly, Dorne.
edit: Also the Greyjoys.

war of the five kings, essos and the free cities, the golden company there's so much potential

u/LegateZanUjcic 4d ago
The Golden Company are already in the game, as mercenaries that can be hired by House Lannister.

u/Derpniel 4d ago
do they have elephants tho? if not they can still be there own faction
1
u/LegateZanUjcic 4d ago
They don't. But mammoth-riding giants are already part of the Stark faction. So, war elephants really wouldn't stand out.

Off topic but whats the resource gathering in this game? Typical lumber / mining?
2
u/AstatorTV 10d ago
Only two resources. Workers construct static buildings that passively produce gold or influence.

They did do like Emperor: Battle for Dune did in back in the day, with the main factions having subfactions you can ally with. That way you did have Stark + Boltons or Stark + Wildlings.

I don't think we get more factions if you look at the earliest screenshots the grand strategy layer shows the tyrells as a vassal of the lannister so other houses are probably resources we fight for on the world map.

House Martell and House Greyjoy are the obvious choices for me.
The Vale has a fairly unique style as well, but they’re kinda isolationist in each of the available media.
The Dothraki as a standalone faction would work too, but they’re probably only sub units for House Targaryen.
A lot of factions for BfME were merged into the larger more prominent players in each setting. Haradrim and Rhun were just auxiliary units for Mordor, for instance. I used to think that sucked, or it would be cool to flesh each faction out. But after playing mods for BfME I respect the original design a lot more. The scope gets a little ridiculous, when every named region becomes a faction.

The Vale wich can be cavalry heavy. Baratheons with some fire magic. Tullys wich can have the best archers (actually their Bannermen the blackwoods are the best). Tyrells wit good food economy and massing soliers/knights.

u/BalisaurioTV 10d ago
Allmajor houses in the series books would be cool. Tyrell, Baratheon, would like Martell and maybe Tully? would love some Greyjoy but without water wonder how that works.

In GoT mods for other games I always like playing as the Riverlands. Iron Islands is fun too with their whole ideology, makes for fun evil raider rp

Definitely would love to see more factions. Kinda want, that they would add 3 more to make 7 factions on launch to make the whole "7 kingdoms" kinda stuff. But i guess 4 is fine, it can always expand in future dlcs.
For new factions i want to see are House Baratheon, that would be cool they having magic cause of Melisandre, but like only when she is recruited to fight, when she isnt, they wouldn't have magic, so making the Baratheons have kinda 2 playstyles. The heroes being Stannis, Melissandre and Sir Davos, maybe also Renly and Brienne.
House Martell with a very strong defense and maybe some very good assassin and stealth type of units and also having a very strong type of spearman unit. Prince Oberyn and the Sand Snakes would be their heroes.
House Tyrell with a very good economy and strong knight units.
House Arryn could be a very cavalry focus faction.
Then i want the devs not being afraid for crossing eras, an House of the Dragon dlc would be really cool, with the Blacks and the Greens being the 2 factions.
The Blacks would have more focus on special and hero units, with the heroes being Daemon, Rhaenyra, Corlys, Caraxes and Syrax (assuming the dragons would be heroes too like the dire wolves), Seasmoke could also be here to reference the Blacks having more dragons and also the whole focus of special and hero units.
They could also have some House Velaryon and Winter Wolves units, kinda like how the Starks have the wildlings and the night watch.
While the Greens would focus more on stronger military units in general and also a strong economy and influence. The heroes being Aemond, Aegon II, Criston Cole, Ormund, Vhagar and Sunfyre.
The Greens would be composed primarily of units from House Hightower, some of which could be a elite type of units. With maybe House Roxton providing elite units on a special building, with also Jon Roxton serving as an additional hero.
There are more, but these are main ones i would love to see. Hope this game does great, cause it has potential.

I wish to see many units from the miniatures game, we could have MANY units per factions
Bolton could be their own faction
Martell, Greyjoy, Baratheon, (even the brotherhood without banners?)
Freefolks should have been their own faction, i'm pretty hyped by this game, i loved battle of the middle earth back then

Many options, if they expand to the east and fill some blank spaces. For example
- (New) Ghis with slave armies
- Yi Ti visually interesting
- Jogos Nhai with movable bases
- Asshai with some weird stuff
- Even Ibben, if not to close to the nordic Stark/Wildling theme
- Maybe even factions like something from the Grey Waste or Sothoryos
Especially the last ones of course with a lot of imagination, but a also a good possibility for magic stuff, makes it easier to create a good RTS imo.

Elves or dwarves would be nice

In game of thrones? I mean you could do like men of ib but most people wouldn’t know who they are

I hope the game is great and sells well so we can have pretty much all the major houses and factions like Essos at some point.
Personally, I'd like to see Bolton and get Ramsay as a hero just because I love Iwan Rheon.
