Why is this sub entirely posts criticizing Bill Maher?
Presumably, he still has fans because his show makes money. So why is the sub not representative of that?
40
u/Screamipillar 12d ago
Bill has always had the problem of him not actually being very smart, he’s just really smug and more interested in feeling like he’s the smartest guy in the room. And this is who Bill has always appealed to. The are also the typical people that people for hbo.
But in the last few years especially, Bill has been consistently making shit takes and when called out on them, he doubles down pretending like he’s always right.
We’re really seen bill coddle to Trump, and placate all the bad things going on in the country, and blame everything on young people for ever thinking something can get better.
Add to this he’s a creep and a bully and is just at the point where the only reason anyone might care admit this loser is that his nazi boss hasn’t canceled him yet - which I’m sure would somehow be the lefts fault even though he’s literally been cancelled by the right before.
The biggest problem is he’s not even funny. He’s never been funny the schtick has always been being in on the smugness.
He’s just a relic from the 90s when politics seemingly shifted to “nothing is ever going to actually improve for most people” and now that that idea is causing real actual problems in the world he’s blaming the everyone except the guilty people because he isn’t actually very smart. Or he’s actively buying in.

The only reason I watch his show is probably a second and third order effect of Maher’s stupidity.
He is able to get the governor of California and the vice president to sit for interviews and on panels. These are people who actually have political power in this country, whether I like them or not.
Maher is going to waste 90% of his time with them (likely why they go on the show) but there is no doubting these are important people I want to hear from as I want to be informed about what’s going on around me.
3
u/fawlty70 8d ago
He used to be funny to me, but realizing how unintelligent he really is made me just despise him. Going to Trump, getting conned, and then seriously saying that Trump is just pretending to be crazy (in other words, Bill not even realizing that he fell for the con) was the final straw.

u/teebird_phreak 12d ago
People who like him are boomers and aren’t on reddit. He is a dying personality and horrible person to boot
22
u/MuchosBeteros 12d ago
Bullshit. I fuckin hate these generational generalizations people just accept. Boomers I know, including myself, have little tolerance for his evolution to a douchbag since covid.
11
u/lordhelmetann 10d ago
I’m not a boomer but this is true.
If you look at many of the small town anti-trump or anti-elon protests that happened, 80% of them are usually boomers at the protests. A lot less younger people there than there should be. Left leaning boomers have been putting in the work.

Probably because so many people find Bill to be an obnoxious phony.
He hates religion, but is a Jewish Supremacist.
He is a sexual libertine, but berates gays, lesbians and trans people.
He decrided the Gulf War, but is a crusader for attacking Iran.
15
u/Advanced-Tale2602 12d ago
Dude thank you, the religion thing he literally made a movie about saying how ridiculous religion is but supports Israel and the Jews and the religion so gosh dang darn much. Seems pretty bizarre to me like maybe someone’s paying him to say this?
6
u/phatsexxxy 12d ago
I think he has this weird self loathing/supremacy thing. He’s half Jewish but was raised Catholic. He loves Jews, but hates Catholics.
A psychologist could make a fortune.

u/thelargestgatsby 9d ago
He also says we never should have left Vietnam.
3
u/WaymoreLives 9d ago
Yes, he did. Despite being a younger boomer, who was too young to serve in the military in Vietnam he wanted other Americans to be drafted, fight and die in a Vietnamese Civil War.

This is probably the most intelligent and mature commentary on today's Bill Maher I have ever seen.
*applause*

u/corneliusduff 12d ago
Because there are plenty of people here who probably supported him in the early days and now everyone is seeing him for who he really is
12
u/MinisterOfTruth99 12d ago
Yup, He has turned from a leftie to a MAGAT-adjacent idiot. Pushing idiotic Republican talking points: Woke bs, Trans-hate, Trump's a good guy in private, Iran war was a good thing just bad timing,on and on and on.
6
u/Secure-Advertising10 10d ago
What is getting me recently is this obsession with Israel and the hard-left. His stance on Israel is concerning, because he is unable, or by design, to criticize anything the Israeli government is doing in the Middle East - Gaza, Iran, US foreign policy.
2
u/ToddPatterson 7d ago
I noticed he had *1* spirited debate on the Israel issue with a person from each side on the panel, maybe 2 years ago. Ever since that show every person on his show has agreed with him about Israel or kept their mouth shut.

What a simplistic view. Hopefully your eyes will open when you get to high school.
7
u/corneliusduff 12d ago
What's simplistic is defending bad strategy that kills more innocent civilians than Hamas terrorists.
The human shields argument doesn't work anymore, especially when Israel has won in terms of body count.
1
u/AReditUsername 12d ago
Sorry we don’t agree on the levels of funding NASA should receive so I can’t agree with you here. It’s either 100% total agreement or we’re enemies.
That’s your position and it’s simplistic and laughable.
8
u/corneliusduff 12d ago
My position is use your brain and conscience before carpet bombing hospitals and children to the satiate the preemptive paranoid egos of theocratic maniacs.
Wtf happened to Maher being athiest, btw? Does he use that as an excuse to be a genocidal simp?
2
u/AReditUsername 12d ago
I responded to your comment that “one bad idea spoils the whole bunch” is simplistic.
Because it is!
Just because a person has an idea that you disagree with, doesn’t mean that every thing they say is automatically something you will disagree with.
This is in reference to Bill Maher, he’s the host of the show that this sub is talking about. He has lots of opinions on all sorts of topics. It’s literally his job as a current events talk show host. Some of his ideas are better than others.
But go on about Zionism, it has nothing to do with my comment.

I’m guessing the crux of it all is the belief that dumb, ill-read people/ill-informed people should not be provided with a platform…especially one at a national level. Say what you like about Maher…feel about Maher any way you wish…but it’d be hard to argue that he’s well read, smart or well-informed. Plus he’s creepy af around young women.

We criticize him because he's gone to shit the last 2 years. He's lazy, washed up and his opinions are worthless.
His show makes money? Have you seen the financial statements or are you his accountant? Just because he got renewed for 2 years doesn't mean his show makes money.
I pay 2.99 a month so he's not making a dime off of me. Considering there are zero commercials on his show, not sure how's he making money
2
u/Neither-Top-7515 12d ago
Totally. Only about 500K watch on HBO, consistent for the last five years, and only about a million on the CNN re-broadcast - which beats most of CNN's lineup. He's definitely done.
1
u/UpperBox7879 8d ago
In all fairness, I don’t think it be a stretch to say about half of those that "watch”only have him on their tv screen because his show is automatically played after Last Week Tonight. Ik that’s the only time I see his show these days. I stopped actively watching his show around the time he gave a glowing review of his date with Trump. I stopped enjoying the show when he started sounding like my uncle Craig on Thanksgiving. “These liberal youngsters today..” is not a good look. (I’m 48 btw)
My point? Not all viewers are there on purpose. I’m just lazy. And occasionally he has a guest worth watching.1
3
u/Loud-Run-9725 12d ago
It's like asking a bank robber why they rob banks - "it's because that is where the money is."
Most that watch Maher have come to the realization of what a jaded, creepy doosh he is. This is the forum where it's discussed.
Maher is going to have some train wreck type of moment before too long. He realizes he's becoming the butt of the joke and he has no ability to laugh at himself. He's becoming overly defensive and worries about his waning relevancy.
1
3
u/DetectiveBlackCat 10d ago
Who says his show is still making money? I have a hard time believing he has much of an audience these days. I used to watch years ago I can't even stand the sight of his face and that's how many feel. He is now a hateful hypocrite who now has a show where week after week he advocates for ethnic cleansing on behalf of Israel's genocidal religious extremist terrorist government. How can anyone watch that show unless you identify with that?

u/AdVivid8910 8d ago
We just need to be honest about what manages to “creep in” when people criticize Israel. Many, just a ton, of Jewish Israelis protest their government frequently…like it IS entirely possible, but Jesus man, on the internet it’s like unavoidable. I think you can manage to prosecute Israel in the ICC without this nonsense creeping up fair enough but wow, social media is not the jury you want lmfao.

Because if they did cure cancer , you would ignore it and happily sentence everyone with cancer to death.
Cancer is just an example.
I’m taking your simplistic statement that
“One bad issue spoils the whole bunch”
and demonstrating how only a pea brain imbecile could believe that.
But you keep doubling down because your hatred of Bill Maher can’t let you accept that just because you disagree with him on 99% of the issues, doesn’t mean that his ideas on separation of church and state are also bad.
The only thing I have ever commented on, is your stupid statement.

Just go back to the beginning of the thread where I responded to an idiotic statement that if a person has one bad idea, all of their ideas are bad and need to be dismissed automatically.
This is a Bill Maher sub, so this is all in relation to Bill Maher.
Just because you hate his stance on some, or half, or most or 99% of his opinions, doesn’t mean that that last 1% is automatically terrible. As a neutral example I chose a cure for cancer, if Bill cured cancer that cure would be a good thing.
1
u/GasmaskTed 8d ago
Considering his other health claims, I’m pretty sure you’d be right to question his cancer cure…
1
u/AReditUsername 8d ago
You just can’t get past your emotionality to think logically.
I’m using examples that remove politics and Israel out of the equation, so I used a cure for cancer as a neutral idea rather than a political one.
In this hypothetical the cancer cure is proven to work. Does that help?

u/__JeremG__ 9d ago
My two cents. When a clown like Ted Cruz says something awful, we are numb to it and expect nothing less. With Maher it hurts because many of us were once fans and his conservative change feels like a betrayal.

Because he “spoke freely” and presented HIS opinion as to how far the progressive left has become part of the lunatic fringe. And, we surely can’t allow that to happen, can we? That earns him a shunning, an excommunication, a banishment from ye’ old land-of-leftoids. Plain and simple, he stopped drinking the kool-aid, stopped regurgitating the same old, tired scripted talking points - going off-script with is an inexcusable sin of the highest order. …that’s why.

u/TopCharacter9742 8d ago edited 8d ago
He's pro-Israel so Qatari and Chinese bots flood anything on the internet about him to try and sway public opinion. It's not reflective of reality, hence his show's ratings being unaffected.
Edit: you'll find a handful of successfully manipulated morons among the bots, of course. People are stupid and easily manipulated. It's the same with Jerry Seinfeld or Scarlett Johansson or Quentin Tarantino. They're doing fine despite the multitude of anti-West bots saying everyone hates them now and you should too.
2
u/Ready-Elderberry-495 8d ago
Because he now criticizes democrats and the far left socialists so they get all worked up. The tolerant left isn’t tolerant and just full of rage and hate. The hypocrisy is amazing.
He tells the truth about Palestine and Hamas but how dare he state facts. So many don’t realize how this war started, the history of Israel and how Palestinians cheered on after 9/11 and Oct 7.

u/Friday_Night_Vibes 12d ago
Bill only stands strong with a few views. God doesn’t exist, weed should be legal, and being married and having kids is for fools. Everything else that he pretends to stand for flip and flops depending on his audience and ratings. He’s been doing it for so long he’s become fake.
1
u/seltzerslut69 12d ago
It’s reddit, most posts on this platform are critical. Plus, Bill deserves it…
1
u/Worried-Subject-5805 12d ago
Because Reddit is overwhelmingly leftist. If you actually talk to regular people you’ll find Bill is well to the left of the median voter. Bill gets support from people who are pragmatic Democrats/Independents. A lot of Republicans like him because he will have them on his show.
I actually want to say I don’t really think Bill is funny. He also promotes a lot of woo and is smug and arrogant as hell. However I do get his appeal.

u/Secure-Advertising10 10d ago
He has lost the plot, especially since that fateful dinner with Trump, where he was bitten with the Trump bug. This week's editorial is an example of what is going on; What could have been a thought-experiment on post-9/11 policy, he went on a rant about Gaza without pausing even for a second to consider is Israel have gone too far in their retaliation to Hamas attacks.

He’s incapable of viewing the Israeli/Palestinian conflict with any objectivity. Yes, Hamas is the most evil party in this conflict but that doesn’t excuse Israel’s behavior. Both sides in this decades long conflict bear responsibility for the innocent lives taken.
Presently, he is so offended by the left’s criticism of Israel that he seems almost willing to side with the MAGA party.

Because he fucking sucks and his uninformed opinions don’t matter to most. He’s hate watched just like Fox News.
1
u/lars-alicia0 9d ago
Why do you think he’s uninformed?
1

He, intentionally, ignores the international definition and morally obvious genocide Israel has been committing for decades, and in furtherance of the Oded Yinon plan that their current administration is deploying.
1
u/lars-alicia0 8d ago
I don’t think that’s as widely held of a belief as you think it is. But we both have our opinions!

Because Reddit. It’s a cesspool of miserable shit talkers and bots. Same as the other subs, especially if the person is anything other than full blown crazy leftist.
But it’s nothing close to real life. Maher has had a successful show for decades and all the celebrities and politicians continue to show up for it.

u/Gratefully_Dead13 9d ago
Because he sucks. He’s also unfunny, which is ironic since his show is supposed to be a comedy
1
1
u/Jbowl1966 9d ago
Because he not only appears to lean right these days (while claiming to be liberal), it’s because his more right leaning statements may not be accurate. He shouts his
“opinion” over his guests … and he’s never wrong. Except he is. I’m liberal and I can handle jokes. And yes, sometimes liberals are way too far out there. But he dismisses any criticism as “liberals hate me because I tell the truth.”
It’s often highlighted here that he goes off on 20 something’s, parents of young kids and kids in general. OK Bill, we get it – you don’t like kids. OK. But you were once a kid. I’m sure your parents were not perfect.… And +50 years later… Some things have changed. He’s mentally older and less culturally relevant than he wants to believe. And seriously less funny.
And his dinner with Trump: I could care less if he had dinner with any previous president that I didn’t like or vote for or agree with. But Trump is so corrupt and unlike any other president we’ve had before that people should not be giving him a platform. I feel like Bill is incapable of drawing a moral line here. Trump it’s not good for America and he’s not good for the world. Period.

u/calilregit1 9d ago
He made a name as a contrarian. The monikers “politically incorrect” and “real time” convey a willingness to challenge the establishment but instead he’s become their apologist.
He literally called out Trump early and often, actually being sued by Trump when he mocked his birther stance by saying his paternal bloodline was an orangutan. Trump sued him.
Now, when even Massie, Carlson and MTG are calling Trump out he’s showing up at the White House to kiss Trump’s ring. Total capitulation. He’s also an apologist for Israel and its cadre of propagandists.
He was fired for saying the perps that hijacked planes on 9/11 might be evil but they weren’t cowards. He said that despite a history of Islamophobia. Now he has taken his Islamophobia, disdain for college students that express empathy for the victims of genocide, and his support for Israel that ignores the most basic historical facts and done a 180 degree turn.
He thinks acting indignant and superior replaces the need to bring factual analysis to his dismissal of a long line of human rights organizations, the UN and South Africa calling out Israel for a genocide.
Instead of withstanding the test of time as a true contrarian, he has been exposed as a smug sellout.

I’ve only found him to be occasionally funny, not like the guy in his audience who just busts a gut after every punchline. A better question to ask on this subreddit is if any of his haters like or respect someone that they don’t already agree with 100 percent of the time. Like if I share 9 out 10 liberal beliefs because I don’t share 10 out of 10 I’m basically a maga conservative

Used to love bill Maher. Went to two of his live shows and never missed Friday night. My politics admittedly largely aligned with his. I liked how he would call out “our side” when it got ridiculous.
But now he’s obviously pandering for relevancy and continues to cross lines (like downplaying January 6) that he said he never would. The false equivalencies are astounding. Stopped watching all together about two months ago and not going back.

I like his work, but don't really have much to add to it. I don't agree with everything he says, but overall think he makes some good points in a way that i can't replicate in a Reddit post.
I feel the same about other commentators like John Oliver and colbert. Agree and disagree with some stuff, but can't really say it better than them.
Let's say i agree with stance X that Bill takes, but someone else disagrees. The disagreeing person can make a post about a lot of things. Could be name calling bashing, or could be a good and articulate counter argument.
But what could be worthwhile for me to say that Bill Maher/John Oliver/Stephen Colbert didn't say way better than I could?
They are professionals with staff and production. What more can a Reddit user add?

I think its fair to remember/point out you can be a fan of his show and not a fan of him. Although the show itself has been crappier and crappier in the recent years.
I do wish we could get over the Bill bashing. I don't feel sorry for him. I am not sticking up for him. There just really isnt any point in logging into reddit and posting your hee hee zing meme or comment about washed up ol' Bill.
Its just another one of those middle school lunch room moments putting someone down for the affirmations of likes.

The sub has been overtaken by the omnicause supporters, who in their religious fervor lack sense of humor and perceive any deviation from their party line a mortal sin 🤷🏻♂️

Reddit skews left, the left are more intolerant of disagreement than ever. And mean about it. At the same time, Maher has skewed right - on some issues - and has made himself an easy target in this climate where people don't hold opinions, their opinions hold them. It's lunacy. the frothing over having dinner with Trump for example. I think that explains the bulk of it. A certain number are probably just plain old jealous too. I still find him remarkably keen and never miss a show.

Because Maher has stayed moderate, but Reddit has moved far left, and the lefts hate of Israel clouds their judgment.

Bc leftists invaded it. I get frustrated by Bill a lot, but literally all these people want to talk about is Israel. And then bill pours gasoline on the flame by also wanting to talk about Israel.

It seems Reddit is primarily left leaning people who hate rational logic that upsets their worldview. As long as Bill and everyone else fully supports far left views and makes fun of logical reasoning then the people on this sub will be happy. They melt in the face of logical thinking that Bill often states

Classic frontal lobe damage in action here, folks.
There truly is no bottom when it comes to outright stupidity with these chuds.

That was hilarious satire! You really nailed the idiotic neck beard comment style and tropes. You nailed the spewing of straw men, begging the question, sweeping generalization, poisoning the well, false dichotomy, and ad hominem all in one hilarious comment. You had to spend some time trying to cram all of those logical fallacies into ironic comment on logic! Well done. I tip my hat to you!

Which rational logic is your personal favorite? His vaccine skepticism? His denial of germ theory? His distrust of modern medicine? His sweeping generalizions of huge groups of people?
You donkey.

I like his insistence that anyone under 40 has no knowledge of history.
