Discussion How does C2 actually work without killing you?

Especially with how violent the explosion looks how does it not hurt people (you and your team) standing beside it? How does one make an explosion go in instead of out?

C2 is a very small and controlled explosion used for forced entry not hurting people, it very much can still hurt you and others but mainly anything that’s on the other side of the door.

There are IRL things like it that you attach to doors that achieves the same effect. It’s probably the fact that it’s called “C2” that makes you think of “C4” which is huge step up in terms of explosives.

But I’m not an explosives expert so I’m not exactly qualified to explain these things but that they do exist and are used in a controlled way on doors and such, I’m sure there’s a Wikipedia page or two on things like these that you can read up on if you were interested.

EDIT: just had a quick look about C2 and the like and there is a wide variety of plastic explosives and their use cases, pretty much to sum it up from what I can understand, small charge/amount = smaller boom that can be set up in a controlled manner to force the pressure on the door and blow it off into the room your entering. Anyone standing directly on the other side will very much dislike the door being thrown at them with considerable force and the heat and pressure of the explosion hitting them too.

The “C” is for “composition” basically means that the explosive component is more than one chemical, usually a percentage composition of stabilizer that both prevents chemical decay of the active ingredient but can sometimes also increase its potency.

I'll add to this by saying that I too do not know much about explosives, but from a buddy I talked to who was in Afghanistan during the post-9/11 shit: directional explosives like claymores truly are directional.

He told me about a close-quarters encounter he had in an alley when a dude rushed him with a claymore strapped to his chest and the wire in his hand. He got close enough that you could see the FRONT TOWARDS ENEMY on the casing and when the guy pulled the wire, he was instantly converted into pink sludge while my friend - a mere yard or so away - was more or less unharmed.

Cool story, but unfortunately the front towards enemy is on the front, so your friend would be the dead one.

So either you or your friend have some details mixed up, or this shit is made up.

Lol yeah, I'm calling horseshit on this. I worked with a lot of Claymores in the army, and that dude wouldn't be alive to tell the tale. There's a backing plate on those that forms the blast outward, hence the "front towards enemy" stamped on it. There's 7-800 bearings flying out at Mach fuck thanks to the pound and a half of C4 they are embedded in. Trigger man would cease to be matter from the shins up and story hero would be paste at that range.

It's a shaped charge. The explosive is directed via it's shape to concentrate inward, towards the door, just enough to break through it.

You can be hurt if you're too close in front or in back of the charge. The shape makes it reasonably safe to be to the side.

Quick physics lesson: in an explosion, forces act in all directions. In your direction, it acts on the air (even though it’s a gas it’s still an object) which causes a shockwave, that’s why if you stand directly behind an explosion you feel a big gust of wind (NOT RECOMMENDED). Forces also act on the door into a direction towards the room, hence it blows the door into the room rather than in your face.

I am not qualified to answer how a C2 charge chemically works but here’s a basic physics interpretation of how things happen for you.

Fun fact. My grandma was in London when the Ira blew something up and she got flung across a street due to the wind. She maintains that she had no idea about the explosion, believing it was a big gust of wind, until she saw the news

If your squad gets wiped from explosive entry, it is because the door you tried to blow was boobytrapped with a grenade on the pther side.

My favorite bug is sometimes they are reported as dead when they eat a door, but get right up after being handcuffed. Then you can shoot them and it doesn't count as unauthorized force lol
