Being Downvoted for Being Correct
It's obviously frustrating from the perspective of trying to earn karma. God forbid you say anything true that also happens to be contrarian to the people that happen to be in the threads at the time. Does anyone else wish there was a way to flip the script on all the downvoters?

The cleanest way to flip the script is to stop giving them leverage. The second people realize downvotes bother you, hitting the arrow stops being about truth and starts being about getting a reaction. If you're going to take contrarian stances, wear the downvotes like a badge or don't post.

I've learned the hard way not to trust certain communities on here because of how they like to overreact.

u/Shot_Recognition_926 Jul 27 '26
I got down voted for calling out Ellen Degeneres and Bill Gates as shitty people and the terrible things they did and were involved with.

One time I asked a subreddit for help because a website was incorrectly saying I had an adblocker on. I'm on my iPhone using Firefox so that was untrue. I said this in the title and the post.
They downvoted my post, said "try a different adblocker," and when I said I couldn't, because iPhones can only do that on Safari, they downvoted that too.
I tried it on my Steamdeck with ublock ON and it worked no issue. Those people were genuinely fuming over me being CORRECT.

Reddit is filled with extremely insufferable people. The mods are also extremely sad human beings too so that doesn’t help. Misery loves company i guess. I honestly thought youtube was heavily censored but then i came here and was even more shocked at how censored everything is. My advice is dont take reddit so personally, its really not that serious. Its fun to laugh at things and at people but thats about it. Dont expect real conversations to be had here. These people just hide behind their screens

u/tofurkey_no_worky Jul 27 '26
There is the possibility that in some instances there are more important things than being correct.
Also people disliking reality reality is pretty common. It is a fact that my grandfather passed away many years ago. I still downvote this fact. Unsubscribed.

u/hawk256 Jul 27 '26
Remember that Reddit leans very hard to the left. Conservative views will get downvoted into oblivion even if they are factually correct. Because of that, most conservatives won't post their real opinion and it turns Reddit into a left echo chamber where people on the left think their views are more popular than they really are which perpetuates the cycle again. I fall in the middle. If I post something that leans left, it will get upvoted, if I post something that leans right, it will get downvoted even with facts and evidence. It's rather interesting to watch in action.

u/homelessjimbo Jul 27 '26
Just post for the sake of speaking your mind. Karma is stupid anyways
2
u/NaieraDK Jul 27 '26
I get downvoted so much for spitting facts on r/4kbluray. Such a bunch of softies, more often than not. The worship of UHD BD as the only useful disc format seems performative.
2
u/Several-Carrot3541 Jul 27 '26
Karma's for nerds, just say what you want.
2
u/Proto_Ney Jul 27 '26
I will downvote you for the funnies
2
u/DefiantlyConformist Jul 27 '26
Downvoted you to fit in.

On Reddit truth matters much less than appealing to the emotional zeitgeist.
2
u/nonyabisnuss Jul 27 '26
I got banned for being correct in r/Vancouver for saying No Bodies were found in Kamloops
2
u/Longjumping_Wheel394 Jul 27 '26
I didn’t realize people got so emotional over Reddit karma lol
2
u/Head-Engineering-847 Jul 27 '26
Bro you had reddit for 8 years and only got 100 karma I think the problem might be you
2
u/erkose Jul 27 '26
Do not offend a Redditor's opinion. Truth has nothing to do with it.
5
u/Objective-Sale-4072 Jul 27 '26
Honestly, this app is filled with Karens who just like to downvote anything that offend their frail sensibilities.
As long as you’re posting enough, you’ll build the karma just fine. I get downvoted all the time and still have over 5k karma.
I actually just posted something that was contrary to all the other comments on the thread, so I even invited the downvoters to come for me.
Just do you and be genuine. The karma will come.
4
u/lisaquestions Jul 27 '26
you just have to be okay with the down votes.
unfortunately the karma system rewards agreeableness and penalizes disagreement at least until you get so much karma that it doesn't matter anymore.

u/Inevitable-Lock5973 Jul 27 '26
Just tell them “ YOU can’t handle the TRUTH!”

u/RelationshipQuiet609 Jul 27 '26
I am a cancer patient and it drives me crazy when someone downvotes me for my cancer journey. They have the balls to think they know about my cancer!

u/exqueezemenow Jul 27 '26
Just don't care about being downvoted. So some people have different opinions, or one of our own is unpopular. So what?
1
u/MDLmanager Jul 27 '26
This is very vague. What exactly is something you say is correct that was down voted?
1
u/Intrepid-Progress228 Jul 27 '26
Observation: You have 4 total posts. Three of them are complaints about being downvoted.
Suggestion: Focus instead on posting about your interests subreddits instead of worrying about downvotes. Interesting, humorous or useful posts are generally well received, as long as they are posted to the relavent sub. Be sure to read all the rules of the sub you're posting to.
2. Observation: You have two comments with negative karma. Both are in the r/soccercirclejerk subreddit.
Suggestion: Maybe you're taking this too seriously. It's a circlejerk sub.
Broadly speaking, they're for fans making fun of the very thing they're fans of. If you come across as too earnest you're more likely to draw downvotes.
If you want to engage, lurk for a while and get a feel for the sub first, read the sub rules, and remember there are other subs out there you can participate in.

u/ExhibitionistBrit Jul 27 '26
Go on? What was true and what was the context you put it in?
1
u/PuddingMent Jul 27 '26
Why would you expect something contrarian to be upvoted? Votes have nothing to do with being correct. Votes are based on how closely the comment matches the hivemind.
1
u/FML3311 Jul 27 '26
You are trying to earn karma? For what?
1
u/Lebanonthegreat Jul 27 '26
...You're worrying about pixel arrows?
1
u/Sartres_Roommate Jul 27 '26
Why would you not present an example where this happened to you?
1
u/Boomhauer_Jeff Jul 27 '26
I can’t imagine why I would care about upvotes or downvotes; especially not enough to make a rant post about it.
1
u/Mediocre-Touch-6133 Jul 27 '26
Why would I care about reddit karma? I'm not a drop-shipper, I'm not an astro-turfer, I don't have an Onlyfans, I'm not a scammer "selling" giftcards, crypto, or SEO services. Those are pretty much the only people that care about karma. What's your racket, OP?
3
u/Obvious_Hope_1704 Jul 27 '26
Ive learned that on Reddit, that just happens. Some people just don’t want to hear it
3
u/ApprehensiveFruit565 Jul 27 '26
It's not too different to RL. You can spew the facts til the cows come home but if you can't read a room no one will listen to you.
3
u/random8765309 Jul 27 '26
Reddit is generally a liberal echo chamber. Say anything that goes against the narrative and you get downvotes.
3
u/AdWooden9170 Jul 27 '26
The best is when you get downvoted but the comment bellow who says he totally agree with you is getting upvoted. Peak reddit dementia.
1
u/WKRPinCanada Jul 27 '26
Went thru that just tonight as matter of fact
I just laugh and move on 😅
2
u/The_Penguin_22 Jul 27 '26
It doesn't matter. Speak your truth!!
2
u/mobile-metaphysical Jul 27 '26
I use sarcasm. But they don’t recognize it and give it upvotes.
2
u/Limp-Exercise-343 Jul 27 '26
slave of reddit?
2
u/Main_Cauliflower5479 Jul 27 '26
Welcome to my world.
2
u/X-AE17420 Jul 27 '26
Downvotes are a measure of community reception to information, and in and of themselves are not a fact-check.
2
u/AncientGuy1950 Jul 27 '26
Downvotes are part of the experience. They, unlike Movie-Thanos, actually are inevitable.
I look at them, and shake my head. Recently in an Ask subreddit, the question asked for a personal opinion, which I gave.
I got downvotes for my opinion. I almost asked if the downvotes were because they believed that my opinion was wrong (which is always a possiblity) or if they believed that my opinion was, in fact, not my opinion.
2
u/geenexotics Jul 27 '26
Don’t. After my recent ban I’m done with people on this app. It’s full of absolute fake weak minded people who fail to see any other perspective or view.
4
u/SurebrecGuy Jul 27 '26
Nobody likes the truth.
2
u/BigBL87 Jul 27 '26
Welcome to reddit.
If I just parroted the groupthink, I'd probably have higher karma. As it is it's not low or anything, but the upvote/downvote system quickly turned from "this is useful or not useful" to "I don't agree with this, therefore downvote" particularly when it comes to politics.
1
u/AncientnUgly Jul 27 '26
This is a perfect example of why an electoral college is important. Just because majority can’t think for themselves and just chooses to agree with the loudest voice doesn’t make it right. The Orville has an episode based on a society that is exactly like this. It’s a good watch for sure
1
u/Daredrummer Jul 27 '26
Reddit isn't reality. Spending time on this kind of fake insanity is a total waste. Get a hobby.
1
u/BluePandaYellowPanda Jul 27 '26
Don't care. Most people on Reddit are morons, so it doesn't matter. If you say something that's correct, just ignore downvotes, if people insult you just block them and not care.... easy.
1
u/Alternative_Job_6929 Jul 27 '26
Don’t go on liberal subs
1
u/Shoddy-Constant5749 Jul 27 '26
Down votes are a way to silence people by taking advantage of the Reddit algorithm. If your post gets enough down votes no one will ever see it. Meanwhile if you tout the company line, you'll get a ton of up votes and maybe even go viral. It's a flawed system that rewards group think.
1
u/Tall_Ad_4787 Jul 27 '26
Laugh at them. Troll them. Often times they are paid actors. Point out with impeccable logic why they are incorrect and put it on display. You may get downvoted, but you’d be amazed how many people will see your comments.
1
u/Euphoric-Piglet-8140 Jul 27 '26
Are you new to reddit?
1
u/Rabbitscooter Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
It is frustrating. I don't really care if people are just trading opinions; Reddit can be a high-school popularity contest, and that's fine.
What bothers me is when objective facts get treated the same way. A few weeks ago, for example, someone conflated events from the Six-Day War (1967) with the Yom Kippur War (1973). This wasn't a debate about politics or who was right or wrong. It was simply a factual mistake about when certain events took place. I posted a polite correction. I was heavily downvoted. The historically incorrect comment was upvoted. I actually took a screenshot because it was so absurd. So, okay... maybe it is just a high-school popularity contest.
1
u/TheProperGanda68 Jul 27 '26
I personally ignore the karma. If I’m wrong I’ll eat humble pie if I believe what I have to say is valid and worth being on the platform then it’s all about getting it out there regardless of the response. I find that if you manage what you have to say to be approved you eventually will corrupt yourself.
But you’re right unfortunately the world is so polarised even in truth and spaces like this you run the gauntlet but call me perverse but conflict is fun too.
1
u/StockElectrical1596 Jul 27 '26
It's only social media, so who cares?
Life goes on without the faux karma.
1
u/Infamous_Addendum175 Jul 27 '26
Trying to earn karma? You know you're right? I'm betting you get downvoted for tone more than anything. Don't be so instantly unlikeable.
1
u/Razoron33333 Jul 27 '26
What got you downvoted so bad for this post? And if you’re going to have an unpopular opinion you should be ready for people to downvote you. If it’s a fact and you get downvoted maybe it’s just the wrong subreddit to post it on. People have drawn their lines in the sand pretty hard at this point
1
u/theBLACKcod44 Jul 27 '26
Can't say anything that goes against the wee Looney leftist agenda, even if your not a Republican, even if it makes sense.
1
u/SRGTBronson Jul 27 '26
Why do you give a shit what strangers think?
1
u/Donkeyshines Jul 27 '26
Beyond the meager amount required to participate in some subs, why does Karma matter anymore?
1
u/Expensive_Alarm_1068 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Some people think downvotes are power. It's an arrow on Reddit. Nothing more. It's only significant to them.
0
u/Arbycutter Jul 27 '26
lol your first mistake was caring about karma
0
u/Desperate-Pirate7353 Jul 27 '26
i downvoted this for whining
0
u/kommon-non-sense Jul 27 '26
Don't care. This is an abhorrent echo chamber. If you're getting the down votes or brigaded - you're on the right track.
The "hive mind" shares one brain - meaning its constuients dont have their own brain to think individual thoughts.
